Happy Wednesday! Have you been looking forward to ORC all week like me? Here we are 4 weeks into our 6 week Challenge. I feel really good about where we are with the Gentleman’s Bachelor Pad, but I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I am STRESSIN to get it all done by the finale. Furniture is really starting to fill in, but there are sooo many details and final touches necessary to make a room feel finished. It’s not enough to build a bookshelf, you have to style it too.
Anywho, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Week 4 is all about a place to rest your hiney. This pad needs SEATING! My bachelor came into this home with only one piece of furniture; the Eames Lounge Chair. Starting with only one piece gives you a good deal of freedom, but at the same time the Eames is such a statement piece that we really needed to to build off of it. For every piece we selected, I kept asking myself- does this work with the Eames?
Here are some of the elements we are working with at this point: Black Eames lounger, Jim Dine lithograph, tribal rug, black wall. This is the corner of the living room where the chair will live.
My typical decorating style is quite eclectic- mixing eras, shapes, finishes, modern, traditional… its all game. For the upholstery, though, we decided to stick to a mid-century feel to help the room feel more congruent. Our neutral sofa was finally delivered and we decided to pair it with two Danish-inspired wood arm chairs.
The Sofa //
I’m obsessed! As I mentioned in this post, it is the Whitaker by Vanguard. We did antique brass nailheads and spaced them out wider than the sample sofa. The wood legs are a really handsome detail. This piece looks great from every angle.
The sofa floats in the room and you can see Mr Brasilia in the background.
I like how the driftwood end table breaks up all those clean lines and softens this corner.
Remember the craigslist console table? My client did a great job transforming it into a white lacquer beauty.
The Chairs //
I searched high and low for a handsome pair of vintage danish chairs to use in the living room. Ultimately, I couldn’t find anything that was sculptural and interesting at a decent price under the tight deadline. Instead, we invested in the fabulous Cavett leather chair by Crate and Barrel. I loved the shape and the warm feel of the brown leather (Libby Sumatra.) Yes we mixed brown leather chairs with a black leather chair. Are we crazy? I think it works!
Still need art for above the chairs. I felt the Calder that was here last week was competing. It will be moved to another room where it can really stand out.
We will shop my client’s collection to find the right pieces. Think gallery wall.
Oh and ignore that pillow, please
The Dining Room //
That brings us to dining room seating. My client wanted something that was kid friendly and comfortable. I wanted something that would contrast against the rustic industrial table and pop against the blue rug. We settled on the Eames DAW- molded plastic armchairs with walnut dowel leg base by Herman Miller. These chairs are a classic for a reason! Not only are they super comfortable, they are wipe-able, sturdy, and light-weight. They have really transformed this space.
Almost done, but the long wall still needs some attention. It’s all naked and a little holey.
And the short wall still needs a bar cart.
Overall I would say the space is 3/4 finished. I’m pleased with how it is all flowing nicely. Mostly modern with some organic touches. A mix of light and dark colors with vibrant pops as accents. Lots of wood, but also a little lacquer and brass. Manly but not cold and boring. Am I on target?
NEXT WEEK: The last of the furnishings. We are building the dining room credenza right now… so fingers crossed we can show it next week! We will also be delivering the coffee table, bar cart and more lighting.
