BKLYN DESIGNS, the design exhibition featuring Brooklyn, New York-based makers and manufacturers, will run from May 6-8, 2016 at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Brooklyn, NY [Greenpoint Stop]. The event, along with several other shows Collective Design (May 4-8, 2016), the mega art show Frieze New York (May 5-8) and ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair, May 14-17, 2016) make up what is loosely called New York “design week”—though it runs for more than two weeks.
The show features emerging designers and established brands hailing from design and manufacturing hubs across Brooklyn, including Greenpoint, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Bushwick, Red Hook, Dumbo, and more. The event includes a series of 30 panel discussions, lectures and workshops exploring topics on design, architecture, sustainability, technology and craft [See entire schedule below.]

Friday, May 6, 2016
10am-12pm & 2-5pm – Kickstarter Office Hours (Micro Loft)
Designers have used Kickstarter to produce small batches of handcrafted designs and manufacture sizable first-runs of new products. Sign-up for a 20-minute one-on-one session with Julio Terra, Director of Design and Technology Outreach at Kickstarter, to talk about your design project and how Kickstarter can help bring it to life. Come prepared with questions.
11-11:30am – Brooklyn-Made Certification (Maker’s Lab)
Adriana Scotti, Vice President for Economic Development at the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, presents a session on the Brooklyn-Made certification program – a market-driven, geographically focused certification assessing and validating products manufactured in Brooklyn.
11-11:45am – Benjamin Moore Presents: Power of Color (Resource Furniture Theater)
A CEU-accredited course presented by Amy Figueroa of Benjamin Moore that examines the emotions associated with each color, with examples of color used successfully in popular culture, fashion, and retail. She will also cover how to distinguish between fads and trends. IDCEC 0.1 LU / AIA 1.0 LU.
12-1pm – AJ Madison & Interior Design A&D Lunch (Micro Loft)
AJ Madison will host a private designer lunch with Interior Design editor Annie Block. Chef Katy Sparks will serve up innovative and responsibly sourced food from her new Brooklyn-based company Tulley Road.
1-2pm – Creating a Map with CartoDB (Maker’s Lab)
Working with open data, CartoDB will guide this class through the basic steps of data visualization, using a public data set to create a map and teaching the basics of styling and geospatial queries. In the end, you will learn how to create an interactive map that can be distributed or put online.
1:30-2:15pm – Is the Kitchen the New Man Cave? (Resource Furniture Theater)
Now that cooking has been recoded as a macho pastime, men are increasingly shaping kitchen design. Drawing from her recent piece on this trend in The Wall Street Journal, journalist Debra Jo Immergut discusses the new “manly” kitchen with James Ramsey (Principal, RAAD Studio), Philippe Meyersohn of AJ Madison, Sarah Zames (Principal, General Assembly) and Adam Zimmerman (Principal, Zimmerman Workshop Architecture and Design)
2:45-3:30pm – Tools of the Trade: Spotlight on Textiles (Resource Furniture Theater)
Domino Editor Elaina Sullivan moderates a conversation on new tools and innovations in textile design and fabrication with Hana Getachew (Creative Director, Bolé Road Textiles), Elodie Blanchard (Founder, Elodie Blanchard Studio, and designer for HBF Textiles) and Stephen Fraser (Co-founder, Spoonflower).
3-4pm – Intro to 3D Printing (Maker’s Lab)
Learn the basics of 3D printing jewelry and other design objects with Peru Meridian Studios. This two-part workshop will take you through the digital steps of 3D modeling in Rhino and the physical process of finishing your printed piece.
4-4:45pm – Dwell Takes Brooklyn (Resource Furniture Theater)
Dwell Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dameron in conversation with the magazine’ s recently profiled residents of Brooklyn, including designer Nick Cope (Co-Founder, Calico Wallpaper), among others.5-5:30pm – The New International Style: Brooklyn (THINK + [TABLE])
A discussion about Brooklyn’ s true character on a local and global scale. What does “Brooklyn Style”mean to its inhabitants? What is it in the eyes of the world? And with its global influence, has it become the new ‘ International Style’?
6-7pm – On the Waterfront: Architecture and Design at All Scales in Brooklyn (Resource Furniture Theater)
Metropolis Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Susan S. Szenasy hosts the show’ s keynote presentation on the waterfront as the next frontier of public space design, and the near future of the Brooklyn waterfront with Aldo Andreoli (Principal, AA Studio), Joshua Nelson (Senior Vice President, New York Economic Development Corporation), Lee Wellington (Executive Director, Urban Manufacturing Alliance) and Dong-Ping Wong (Director of Design, + POOL). Followed by Opening Night Party from 7-9pm.
7:30-8pm – Book Signing with Rita Catinella (American Design Club Pop-Up Shop + Media Point)
During the Opening Night Party, design journalist Rita Catinella will sign copies of her new book, Objects of Desire, in the American Design Club Pop-Up Shop + Media Point.

10-11am – Pratt Drawing Workshop (Maker’s Lab)
Remember the enjoyment you had drawing as a kid? Sketching is fun and can also be useful in many walks of life. Pratt Institute School of Continuing and Professional Studies will provide a structured opportunity for you to reconnect with your inner artist and try your hand at creating art. Materials provided. 1am-12pm – Explore the World of Illustration (Maker’s Lab)
In this one hour introduction from Pratt Institute School of Continuing and Professional Studies, Summer Credit Intensive program, you will create an illustration using traditional materials and discuss the ins and outs of making art that is information specific. 12-1pm – Small Space Small Bites (Micro Loft)
Chef Rashad Frazier of Pulled Together will share tips for small space entertaining, showing you how to execute a menu of small bites for that cozy cocktail party you’ re planning. Private reception to follow.
1-2:30pm – Modern Macrame Make & Take (Maker’s Lab)
Macramé is back! Join Brooklyn Craft Company to learn beginner macramé techniques in this easy workshop. You’ ll create a modern macramé wall hanging (approx 12′′ wide x 24′′ long) as you learn several basic macramé knots. You’ ll leave with a statement piece for your walls and the knowledge to tackle more macramé on your own! Register here.
1-3pm & 4-6pm – Tapestry Weaving Workshop (TAC Pop-Up Studio)
In this workshop led by Alicia Scardetta, you will learn the basics of tapestry weaving, how to set up a loom, and different techniques to create pattern and texture. You’ ll walk away with a small tapestry wall hanging and a frame loom to continue practicing.
1:15-2pm – Adaptability and Scale in Green Architecture (Resource Furniture Theater)
City Tech’ s Team DURA (Diverse. Urban. Resilient. Adaptable.) led by Professor Alexander Aptekar presents adventures and lessons from the 2016 project for Solar Decathlon and how effective adaptability in green architecture can be an integral part of a zero energy solution.
2:30-3:15pm – Design and Fabrication Methods in Interactive Architecture (Resource Furniture Theater)
The Architect’s Newspaper Senior Editor Matt Shaw in conversation with Wes Rozen (Owner, SITU STUDIO), Michael Szivos (Owner, SOFTlab) and Emily Abruzzo (Partner, Abruzzo Bodziak Architects) discuss the latest in fabrication methods that use hacking to allow end-users the flexibility to modify and customize their designs.
3-4pm – Kickstarter for Designers 101 (Maker’s Lab)
Kickstarter offers designers a unique opportunity to connect with an audience and gather resources to bring their ideas to life. Julio Terra, Director of Design and Technology Outreach, will discuss best practices for crafting great campaigns and building a community on Kickstarter. Talk will be followed by an open Q&A session.
3:45-4:30pm – What Defines Brooklyn Design Today? (Resource Furniture Theater)
Brooklyn’ s leading designers including Elizabeth Rogers (Principal, Ensemble Architecture), John Kole (Co-founder, Hecho), Amanda Jesse (Partner, Jesse Parris-Lamb) and Mark Jupiter discuss the trends, principles, and innovations that define the Brooklyn aesthetic in a panel hosted by Brownstoner Editor-in-Chief Cate Corcoran.
4:30-5pm – Transforming Concepts of Luxury and Living Space (THINK + [TABLE])
A discussion about how we define luxury in Brooklyn today. With a wider range of living typologies, is efficiency a necessity or a choice?
5-5:45pm – Virtual Reality: Exploring the Built Environment in Three Dimensions (Resource Furniture Theater)
Design journalist Michael Cannell sits down with Stephanie Riggs (Founder, Sunchaser Entertainment) Ailyn Mendoza (Director of Architecture & Client Services, IrisVR) and Kyle Bergman (Architect and Founder/Director Architecture and Design Film Festival) to discuss the latest developments in virtual reality and its impact on the built environment.

In a discussion moderated by Resource Furniture’ s Lisa Blecker, small-space experts, and husband and wife, David Friedlander (Managing Editor, LifeEdited) and Jacqueline Schmidt (Director of Design, Ollie), alongside James Garrison (Principal, Garrison Architects), talk about the global and personal reasons why everyone should consider downsizing the amount of stuff and space they have.
12-2pm & 3-5pm – Screen Printing Workshop (TAC Pop-Up Studio)
In this workshop led by Hannah Schultz from TachiTachi, you will learn the basics of the screen printing process and how to print your designs. You’ ll walk away with a printed tote bag with your design.

1:15-2pm – Where Art Meets Design: Starting the Perfect Collection for Any Budget and Any Space (Resource Furniture Theater)
No home is complete without art. But how do you get started building a collection? AphroChic, Uprise Art and the Jenn Singer Gallery lead a discussion on how art lends personality to a space, collecting art online and off, and how to start buying the art you love in a snap.
2-2:30pm – Meaningful Objects (THINK + [TABLE])
A discussion that gets to the heart of the question: How are objects that occupy our space chosen? How do we form connections to the objects in our lives, and which of these objects are indicative of our life and its legacy?
2:30-3:15pm – True Calling: Authentic Design for Hospitality (Resource Furniture Theater)
As Brooklyn continues to grow and be a hotbed for interesting concepts, how do designers and developers create truly authentic spaces while continuing to raise the bar – especially in hotels and restaurants? Hospitality Design magazine’ s Editor-in-Chief Stacy Shoemaker Rauen sits down with a few of the leaders who have figured out how sense of place goes beyond what one might think of as designed in Brooklyn, including Adam Rolston (Design Director/Partner, INC Architecture & Design), Nick Liberis (Partner, Albo Liberis) and Tara Mastrelli (President, Studio Tano).
4-5pm – Advancing your Design Career (Maker’s Lab)
