We’ve come across lots of creative inspiration this week, and our first story comes from Tash, who tells us about her favourite new Instagram find – Justine Kusuma. Kusuma is an illustrator with a truly elegant style, and she often works with luxury and high fashion brands.

Tash came across Kusuma when reading about her recent collaboration with luxury British perfume and scented candle brand, Jo Malone, where she has been applying her beautiful work to the product packaging. The twist? She’s been doing it live, in the actual store.

Creative Inspiration in London

Looking for things to do over the Bank Holiday weekend in London? You’ll find a fair few of us at the beautiful Somerset House this weekend. There are all sorts of creative events and exhibitions taking place, including annual graphic design festival Pick Me Up (we covered the identity design a little while back on Friday Favourites). The festival features a brilliant exhibition of contemporary graphic design (most of which you can buy), workshops, and live letterpress demos from the amazing Alan Kitching (more on him soon) – it’s one not to miss. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the work on display:

If photography is your thing, we’d also recommend visiting the Sony World Photography Awards 2016 exhibition (also at Somerset House). The exhibition features all of the shortlisted photographs for this year’s awards, and Creative Review has an excellent preview of what’s on display. We’ve selected a few of our favourites below:

Find about both of these events – and everything else that’s going on – on the Somerset House website.

Rain, rain, go away…

Speaking of photography, we loved reading It’s Nice That’s story about Yoshinori Mizutani’s photography project, which captures the people of Tokyo caught in a the rain. The results are simple, striking, and beautiful – you can see an example at the top of this blog post, and a few more below:

The black and white lines of the zebra crossings also reminded us of Irina Kuglova’s illustrations, which we spotted earlier this week on Creative Boom:

Calligraphy + Grafitti

Zayne points us in the direction of this brilliant video on CNN about French-Tunisian artist, eL Seed. Combining the traditional craft of calligraphy with modern graffiti, eL Seed’s unique “calligrafitti” is a vibrant clash of cultures and techniques, mixing the old with the new to create his own, personal style.

What’s happening, Amsterdam?

Purple Rain at Tuschinski

In tribute to the legendary Prince, fans will be able to see his classic 1984 rock musical drama, Purple Rain, back on the big screen at the Pathé Cinema Amsterdam this Sunday. We dare you not to sing along (our favourite is When Doves Cry, incase you were wondering). Find out more and book tickets here.

John Cleese at the Carré (maybe the last chance to see him before he dies!)

On Monday and Tuesday next week, another legend will be in town – John Cleese. Famously known for his roles in the likes of Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, and A Fish called Wanda, Cleese will be performing his latest solo show (hilariously titled “The Last Time To See Me Before I Die?”) at the Carré Theatre. The show promises to be full of hilarious anecdotes about his personal life and career, plus the audience will have the chance to ask this living legend some questions.  More information here.

Liberation Day

Following directly on from Remembrance Day, 5 May is a national day of celebration known as Liberation Day in the Netherlands. There’s a huge variety of activities, events and entertainment taking place to commemorate the liberation of The Netherlands during World War II, including an extensive musical programme and open air cinema. You can find out more at www.4en5meiamsterdam.nl

And in London next week…

If you’re looking for some post-bank holiday inspiration then check out London Craft Week. From book binding to etching, calligraphy to silversmithing, and everything in between (armoury or knife making, anyone?), London Craft Week is a 5 day showcase of craftsmanship including talks, workshops and exhibitions all over the city. Find out more here.
