Modular has created quite the intriguing lamp in collaboration with Bleijh, a Dutch industrial design studio. The lamp, called Médard, almost looks alive, with its three legs positioned as if it were a creature ready to pounce. In fact, the designers took inspiration from a stick bug. The resemblance is just enough to conjure the idea of the insect without compromising the architectural intrigue of the piece. The head of the lamp is almost an exact likeness to spotlights used in photo studios or on film shoots, creating a fascinating dichotomy between what is natural and what is man or machine made.

While sitting on a desk, it’s as if it is peering on with you while you work, or surveying the room from a distance as you enter. Médard is in no way intimidating, though. It’s inviting – almost cute, as cute as a desk lamp can be, at least. According to designer Basten Leijh, “It’s the ideal desk lamp for all architecture fans,” with its insect-inspired profile and its playful industrial vibe. The lamp can be both a soft addition to a room full of hard lines, or it can be that heavier, cooler touch to a room covered in rustic fabrics and antiques. The versatility of this little desk lamp has no bounds.
