Jaguars – The environmental organization Paso Pacífico confirmed the presence of a pregnant jaguar in Municipalities of San Juan del Sur and Cárdenas.
San Juan del Sur Chapter of the National Chamber of Tourism of Nicaragua (CANATUR) On January 29th, about 60 local businesses met with the Board of Directors of the San Juan del Sur Chapter of the National Chamber of Tourism of Nicaragua (CANATUR) to hear how the chapter can help local businesses.
February
Opening of Avenida El Tropezón – February 8th marked the official opening of the El Tropezón project, 250 linear meters of improvements to the main avenue into town at a total cost of almost 4 million Córdobas.
Indian Face Tours, a new transportation and tour business opened in a unit outside of the market, next to Nadiezda the Vets.
San Juan del Sur Biblioteca Movil moved into its new home. It has been hugely successful since 2003 when it became the first lending library and in Nicaragua.
March
Costa Rica introduced the $7 Costa Rica exit Tax ($5 departure tax and $2 for customs fee). All nationals and foreigners (including minors) must pay the fee in order to leave Costa Rica.
“O’Shea’s, one of the most successful bars in Granada held its Grand Opening of its new second location here in San Juan del Sur in the resort community of Las Lomas Verdes (Congo Hills) on the road to Playa Remanso, south of SJdS.
The ‘End of an Era’ – El Colibri served its last meals on March 28th. The restaurant run by Mary O’Hanlon and husband Gianmaria had been one of most popular restaurants in San Juan del Sur for 10 years.
Bridget Perry and Matt Hamilton opened Buddha’s Garden to complete the Zen Yoga area of; Yoga Studio, Garden Center and Health Food. Buddha’s Garden is the first organic vegan café with a menu built around the concept of raw food.
April
The Tourist Center and Jetty Project was announced. Construction would include a tourist center, jetty, commercial and administrative buildings, recreational and relaxation areas with street furniture.
The resolve of the Nicaragüenses was tested as more earthquakes kept the country under an Extreme Red Alert. It all started at on Thursday the 10th of April with a 6.1 on the Richter scale at Mateare near Managua. Half an hour later a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded only 8 km from the same place. The next day, Friday the 11th of April, San Juan del Sur felt the 6.6 magnitude earthquake that was recorded 10 km from Nandaime, near Granada. The damage report was one person dead (from heart attack), 38 people injured, 53 houses collapsed, 1,060 houses partially damaged and cracks in several hundred buildings.
Survivor announced that several local beaches would be closed from April 21st to September 21st. El Toro, Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa Las Tablas, Pena Rota and Escamequita were all affected by the closures for the filming of two seasons of the show.
May
El Timón’ celebrated the 5th Anniversary of their Cultural Thursday, the free weekly dance and music show.
Survivor awarded SJdS the honor of being named in the prestigious series logo that will be seen all over the world. For the first time in the show’s history, the name of the town the series was filmed in was used in the logo.
June
History was made in early June when the first artificial reef was installed in the bay of San Juan del Sur. The effort was a collaboration between FANSA (Fincas Aquaticas de Nicaragua S.A.), Dive Nicaragua and Cooperatives Arrecife. The group spent two days testing equipment and installing two reefs in the bay which will be monitored to see how marine life inhabits them.
Health officials first started warning of a new virus called Chikungunya which had shown up in Cost Rica. The virus, similar to dengue, causes; high fever, headaches, muscle and joint pains, nausea and rashes and originated in Tanzania in 1952.
July
The route of the Nicaraguan Canal was presented on 7th July 2014. The official route of the Nicaraguan Grand Inter-Oceanic Canal was announced today by the Government of President Daniel Ortega and the Chinese business group HKND. The canal will link Brito on the Pacific Ocean with Lake Nicaragua at Las Lajas (between La Virgen and Rivas). Once across the lake, the canal will use the Tule River valley up to a new manmade lake before reaching Punta Gorda on the Atlantic Ocean.
During the month of July, all 3rd grade students in SJdS received a LaRouche Scholastic Dictionary thanks to the San Juan del Sur Rotary Club. In June, special collections had been organized in town to collect funds for the project. Rotary Clubs from Woodstock, Virginia – Springfield, Kansas and Gillete, Wyoming also helpedwith funding.
August
Seven young people from San Juan del Sur completed their first course on diving techniques taught by the national diving school; DIVE Nicaragua and Fabio Buitrago. The course was taught with the support of an Italian organization called Quetzal that finances 97% of the course costs.
Fundación A. Jean Brugger welcomed Vilma Bustos as the new Office and Communications Manager in Nicaragua. Vilma is one of the beneficiaries of the foundation grants and also played a role in the development of the resort and the Foundation.
September
It was announced that Burger King and Casa del Café will anchor the 1,050 square meter Plaza Los Mangos under construction on the Pan American Highway in Rivas. The financing for the project is from the Banco de la Producción – Banpro and the first tenants should be open by mid.
Tel Cell celebrated its 6th anniversary of the SJdS store. They started with one store in Leon, and then opened in Rivas and later SJdS.
After a long wait, the 362 meter long, 11 meter wide and US $30 Million Santa Fe Bridge (built by the International Cooperation Agency of Japan – JICA) was officially opened. The bridge links the communities of Santa Fe and Los Chiles on opposite banks of the Rio San Juan.
October
San Juan del Sur celebrated its 162nd anniversary of being proclaimed a City.
Rivas got a new Police Chief. High Commissioner Enrique Salazar took over on the 1st of October replacing High Commissioner Sergio Gutiérrez who was promoted to Second in Command of the Department of Managua.
Beach Fun Rentals opened a new beachfront location in front of Restaurante Brisas Marinas.
Arribas Bar celebrated 5 years of being open in San Juan del Sur. They started at Ana Mar, and then the old Pier location (formerly Ricardo’s and the Scuba Shack) and then custom built a place next to Meson Espanol.

BRUNO POMARES HERRERA (Director) and his Folk Group Nicaragua Mía celebrated their 14th Anniversary with a special concert that featured Ballet Folklorico of Nicaragua; Tepenahualt.
SJdS Biblioteca Publica (San Juan del Sur Public Library) had its 13th Anniversary.
The 4th Annual Black Saturday Market was held in SJdS, bringing together store owners, restaurants, small industries and cooperatives from the Municipality of SJdS and other parts of the country.

Del Sur News celebrated its 8th anniversary and is now in its 9th year of print. Our good friend Pedro Isidro was kind enough to send in a few words of congratulations.
San Juan del Sur Cervecería poured its first pints at a special benefit event for the Barrio Planta Project.
And finally, saving the biggest news until last… The symbolic ceremony to mark the start of pre-construction work on the Grand Canal of Nicaragua was held in the morning of Monday, December 22nd at Miramar in the Department of Rivas. Special guests were Mr. Wang Jing, the President of the concessionaire company; HKND Group as well as the Vice President of Nicaragua; Omar Halleslevens Acevedo. The work will begin with the construction of access roads to the excavation locations and other facilities.

Enero
Liga de Béisbol Profesional LBPN; Los Gigantes de Rivas ganaron el Campeonato de la temporada superando al Bóer 4-1 en la serie Final. Los Gigantes ganaron cinco juegos 15-9 para ganar la serie.
Jaguares – La organización ambientalista Paso Pacífico confirmó la presencia de una jaguar embarazada en los municipios de San Juan del Sur y Cárdenas.
El Capítulo de San Juan del Sur de la Cámara Nacional de Turismo de Nicaragua (CANATUR) el 29 de enero, realizo su primer asamblea con cerca de 60 empresas locales se reunieron con la Junta Directiva del capítulo de San Juan del Sur de (CANATUR) para oír cómo el capítulo puede ayudar a las empresas locales.
Febrero
Apertura de la Avenida El Tropezón – El 8 de febrero se hizo la inauguración oficial del proyecto de remodelación de El Tropezón, 250 metros lineales de mejoras a la avenida principal a la ciudad a un costo total de casi 4 millones córdobas.
Tours de Cara de Indio, un nuevo negocio de transporte y tour abrió en una unidad fuera del mercado, junto a Veterinaria Nadiezdha.
La Biblioteca Móvil de San Juan del Sur se mudó a su nuevo hogar. Ha sido sumamente exitosa desde el 2003 cuando se convirtió en la primera biblioteca en Nicaragua.
Marzo
Costa Rica presentó la nueva cuota de salida de Costa Rica de $7; como impuesto de salida de $5 y $2 para el honorario de las aduanas. Todos los ciudadanos y los extranjeros (incluidos menores de edad) deberán pagar la cuota para salir de Costa Rica.

El ‘fin de una Era’ – El Colibrí sirvió su última comida el 28 de marzo. El restaurante dirigido por Mary O’Hanlon y su esposo Gianmaría había sido uno de los restaurantes más populares en San Juan del Sur desde hace 10 años.
Bridget Perry y Matt Hamilton inauguraron Buddha’s Garden para completar la zona Estudio Zen Yoga de yoga, jardín y centro de comida sana. Buddha’s Garden es el primer café vegetariano y orgánico con un menú construido alrededor del concepto de alimentos crudos.
Abril
Se anunció el proyecto de embarcadero y centro turístico. La construcción incluiría un centro turístico, edificios del embarcadero, comerciales y administrativos, recreativos y zonas de relax con mobiliario urbano.
La determinación de los nicaragüenses fue probada, como más terremotos que mantuvieron el país bajo una Extrema Alerta Roja. Todo empezó en el jueves 10 de abril con un temblor de 6,1 en la escala de Richter en Mateare cerca de Managua. Media hora más tarde un terremoto de 5,1 grados de magnitud se registró sólo 8 km desde el mismo lugar. Al día siguiente, el viernes 11 de abril, En San Juan del Sur se sintió el terremoto de 6,6 magnitud que se registró a 10 km de Nandaime, cerca de Granada. El informe de daños fue de una persona muerta (de infarto), 38 personas heridas, 53 casas se derrumbaron, 1.060 casas parcialmente dañadas y grietas en varios cientos de edificios.
El programa de televisión Survivor anunció que cerraría varias playas locales del 21 de abril a 21 de septiembre. El Toro, Tamarindo, Playa Hermosa, Las Tablas, Peña Rota y Escamequita fueron afectados por los cierres para el rodaje de dos temporadas de la serie.
Mayo
Restaurante El Timón’ celebró el quinto aniversario de jueves culturales, el show gratis de música y danza semanal.
Survivor otorgó a San Juan del Sur el honor de ser nombrado en el logo de la prestigiosa serie que será vista por todo el mundo. Por primera vez en la historia de la serie, fue utilizado el nombre de la ciudad en el logo donde fue filmada la serie.
Junio
Se hizo historia a principios de junio cuando se instaló el primer Arrecife Artificial en la bahía de San Juan del Sur. El esfuerzo fue con la colaboración entre FANSA (Fincas Acuáticas de Nicaragua S.A.), DIVE Nicaragua y la Cooperativa de Arrecife. El grupo pasó dos días en pruebas de equipos y la instalación de los dos arrecifes en la bahía que monitorearán la vida marina que habita en ella.
Funcionarios de Salud empezaron a avisar de un nuevo virus llamado Chikungunya que había aparecido en Costa Rica. El virus, similar al dengue, causa; fiebre alta, dolores de cabeza, dolores musculares y articulares, náuseas y erupciones y se originó en Tanzania en 1952.
Julio
La ruta del Canal nicaragüense fue presentada el 07 de julio de 2014. La ruta oficial del Gran Canal Interoceánico nicaragüense fue anunciada hoy por el gobierno del Presidente Daniel Ortega y el grupo empresarial chino HKND. El canal unirá Brito en el océano Pacífico con el Lago de Nicaragua en Las Lajas (entre La Virgen y Rivas). Una vez al otro lado del lago, el canal utilizará el Valle del Rio Tule y hasta un nuevo lago artificial antes de llegar a Punta Gorda en el océano Atlántico.
Durante el mes de julio, todos los estudiantes de III grado en San Juan del Sur recibieron un Diccionario Escolar LaRouche gracias al Club Rotario de San Juan del Sur. En junio, las colecciones especiales habían sido organizadas en la ciudad para recaudar fondos para el proyecto. Los clubes rotarios de Woodstock, Virginia – Springfield, Kansas y Gillette, Wyoming también ayudaron con fondos.
Agosto
Jóvenes de San Juan del Sur completaron su primer curso sobre técnicas de buceo impartido por la escuela nacional de buceo; Dive Nicaragua y Fabio Buitrago. El curso fue impartido con el apoyo de una organización italiana llamada Quetzal que financia el 97% de los costos del curso.
Fundación A. Jean Brugger dio la bienvenida a Vilma Bustos como la nueva Manager de la oficina y comunicaciones en Nicaragua. Vilma es una de los beneficiarios de las subvenciones de la Fundación y también desempeñó un papel en el desarrollo de la localidad y de la Fundación.
Septiembre

Tell Cell (tienda de celulares y accesorios) celebró su sexto aniversario de la tienda en San Juan del Sur. Empezaron con una tienda en León y luego abrió sus puertas en Rivas y San Juan del Sur más adelante.
Tras una larga espera, los 362 metros de largo y 11 metros de ancho fue inaugurado el puente de Santa Fe de US $ 30 millones (construido por la Agencia de Cooperación Internacional del Japón – JICA). El puente une las comunidades de Santa Fe y Los Chiles en orillas opuestas del Rio San Juan.
Octubre
San Juan del Sur Celebra su 162 º Aniversario de ser proclamado una ciudad.
Rivas tiene a un nuevo jefe de policía. Alto Comisionado Enrique Salazar asumió el 1 de octubre como reemplazo del Alto Comisionado Sergio Gutiérrez quien fue promovido a segundo al mando del Departamento de Managua.
Fun Beach Rentals abrió una nueva ubicación frente al mar frente a Restaurante Brisas Marinas.
Arribas Bar celebra cinco años de estar abierto en San Juan del sur. Empezaron en el Ana Mar y luego la en vieja localización de The Pier (anteriormente de Ricardo y Scuba Shack) y luego fue ubicado en un lugar construido junto al Mesón Español.
Noviembre
BRUNO POMARES HERRERA (Director) y su grupo folklórico Nicaragua Mía celebran su 14 aniversario con un concierto especial que ofreció el Ballet Folklórico de Nicaragua; Tepenahualt.
La Biblioteca Pública de San Juan del Sur celebro su 13 º aniversario.
El Cuarto Anual Sábado Negro del Mercado se celebró en San Juan del Sur, que reúne a los dueños de tiendas, restaurantes, pequeñas industrias y cooperativas de la Municipalidad de San Juan del Sur y de otras partes del país.
Diciembre
Del Sur News Celebra su Octavo Aniversario y está ahora iniciando su noveno año de impresión. Nuestro buen amigo Pedro Isidro tuvo la amabilidad de enviarnos unas palabras de felicitaciones.
La Cervecería San Juan del Sur vertió sus primeras pintas en un evento especial a beneficio del proyecto Barrio la Planta.
Y finalmente, la noticia más importante fue ahorrada hasta el último momento… La simbólica ceremonia para marcar el inicio de los trabajos previos a la construcción del Gran Canal de Nicaragua se celebró en la mañana del lunes, 22 de diciembre en Miramar en el Departamento de Rivas. Los invitados especiales fueron el Sr. Wang Jing, el Presidente de la empresa concesionaria; HKND Group, así como el Vicepresidente de Nicaragua; Omar Halleslevens Acevedo. El trabajo se iniciará con la construcción de las vías de acceso a los lugares de excavación y otras instalaciones.
