Could you imagine a nice looking sign on the corner of main st.(PENN.AVE) and Rt 54 downtown Delmar.???To replace the outdated ADOPT A HIGHWAY SIGN ~!! Although the new sign (LIKE BELOW) would have The TOWN of DELMAR Shield and replace founded date.Add UNDER WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS with INDIVIDUAL SIGNS EACH WITH THE PLACES OF BUSINESS OF DOWNTOWN DELMAR LIKE MILANO'S PIZZERIA, PEDDLERS FOUR, DELMAR TAVERN , STAINED .GLaSS BRIDAL, SHORT FUNERAL HOME,HISTORIC CABOOSE ,HISTORIC HIGHBALL AND MORE.. These business owners are trying to keep Delmar alive and need the support they deserve all year.The Christmas Holidays were a good example nothing as to a simple piece of holly and a bright red bow would have sent a good message to the business people, WE LIKE YOU ~!! A hope this idea gets to our city manager, downtown businesses and Chamber. Yes I speak with concern as a past Delmar Maryland Mayor of the days when the comprehensive plan for Delmar was created. I have not done a book review in a while so let me post some comments on a book recently read called "The White Garden, A Novel of Virginia Woolf" by Stephanie Barron. Now for those who do not know, Virginia Woolf was an English writer whose highpoint was between WW1 and WW2. She had periods of madness and committed suicide in March 1941. The white garden is an actual garden at Sissinghurst Castle in England. The book has a number of points that normally interest me, first a quest for an object, gardening, madness, Delaware, spy intrigue in the 1930's, and writing.
So the story goes Jo, a professional gardener from Delaware, is on assignment to copy the The White Garden at Sissinghurst Castle and replant the copy on Long Island for a rich client. Her Grandfather was a gardener from England who as it turns out worked at Sissinghurst castle. He commits suicide. She encounters a manuscript that has her grandfather's name and it appears to have been written by Virginia Woolf. She takes the manuscript, which is only half as the second half was torn out, to a rare book dealer to be verified who in turns gives the book to his ex-wife, who takes off with it. A chase around part of England starts in which onion fashion a new twist is given to the novel, enters a German spy, a couple of communist spies, a couple murders, the digging up of grave site, the tilting and removal of papers from a statue in a garden, etc etc. The story just has a number of twists and new directions. it also, by way of the Virginia Woolf manuscript keeps a second story of intrigue going. In the end Girls gets boy and everything resolves itself. The characters in the novel are flat and had not the story line developed in to new twists as I read it I would have found it to be a poor story.
