THE DELMAR LIBRARY
Quarter Auction to benefit the Delmar Public Library capital campaign will be held Saturday, May 23, at the Delmar VFW, located at 200 W. State St. in Maryland. The event will raise funds for an expansion to the library. Doors open at 5 p.m. Games being at 6 p.m. First paddle $5, with additional paddles $3 each. Many items will be up for bid including gift certificates to local restaurants. Paddles available at the door. Food on sale. Bring a roll of quarters.

The Heritage Day Fundraising Committee will be hosting a Quarter Auction on Friday, August 7th at the VFW. The doors will be open at 5 pm with the auction starting at 6 pm. Should be over between 9 and 9:30 pm.
I am asking everyone to tap into your personal and professional resources for donations for that cause. The donation could be an item, a gift card, gift certificate, restaurants, golf courses, off-season passes (for those who have OC connections), hair saloon, automotive certificates, etc.
There will be vendors there who will be offering donations as well, such as Avon, Pampered Chef, etc. The donations cannot be liquor or tobacco related.
They are asking if we can come up with at least 20 donations. I am checking with the Sheriff’s Office-who controls “gambling”, to see if we can make themed Baskets and have them there. By baskets I mean maybe a grill with grill accessories, a basket with tons of schools supplies since it will be school time. IF we get the okay from them, then we will be making some of those as well.
I feel embarrassed to ask for help, but the Heritage Day is a Town event and with money tight in the budget, this is a fundraiser that should bring in some money.
All donations will need to be at Town Hall no later than June 15th so that they can be incorporated into a list and then we will advertise the event.
I am also looking for people who can work the event. I am told it is major. I need people at the door (2), people selling quarters (2). People collecting the quarters after each auction (4-6), and we need people to be “Vanna White” and show off the merchandise. It can be you, your spouses and adult children. Teenagers and tweens can be used as “Vanna” but adults need to be dealing with the money aspect of the event.
Food is also a big feature at these events. I’m going to see if the VFW will cook for us and if there is a charge, or if they will let us use their kitchen and ask Milano’s or Jessica’s Place to sponsor us with free pizza and we will sell them per slice and make money that way as well.
Thanks in advance for any and all considerations to this worthy cause. I’m hoping for a nice turnout and it being very profitable.

The Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society will have a Tour of Green Hill Church in Wicomico County on May 27th.
The Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society will meet at noon at The Deli At Pecan Square, off Nanticoke Road, for a business meeting. From there we will drive to Green Hill Church for a 2 PM tour of the church.
St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, also known as Green Hill Church was built in 1733. The church was built to serve the needs of the town of Green Hill, on the banks of the Wicomico River. Green Hill never became a town but the church remains and it has changed little from it’s original colonial beginnings
Directions: from Salisbury business RT50 head west on Nanticoke Road. Pecan Square Shopping Center is on the left. Leaving Pecan Square go West 6 miles to Whitehaven Road. Turn left onto Whitehaven road and drive about 4.2 miles to Green Hill Church Road. Turn left onto Green Hill Church Road and go about 8/10s of a mile to where the road takes a sharp right. Do not take the right, keep straight onto the dirt road that will lead back to Green Hill church. For those with GPS use 4025 Green Hill Church Road as a location. This is the house with an iron rail fence around it by the dirt road that will lead to Green Hill Church.

I have lived in houses that had entranceway door locks like this.
I received a letter from the Prothonotary of Sussex county last week. In my case I know this means it is Jury Duty time again. I try not to avoid my civic duty but since I have gotten old I find if I am picked for a jury the defendants lawyer will usually dismiss me from the jury because I am an old white guy and his defendant is a young black man and he knows I am going to be against him and he is right. But since I am 71 years old Sussex County gives me the option of declining jury duty and I decided to do so.
I have had a couple of good lunches at Milano's in Delmar. I have had a couple of disappointing meals at Delmar Pizza. The pizza is still good and usually anything with a sauce smothering it, but I think the quality of the food has gone down out there.

I went to the St. Phillips strawberry festival in Laurel last week. It is a nice event. This year was a little smaller from the initial strawberry festival a few years back and I didn't see a booth for the Laurel Historical Society. The scrapple sandwich was good but not as good as in the past years. I think they are cutting the scrapple thinner.

The most recent car cruisin event in Ocean City had my daughter busy. She works in the Ocean City Police Department and they had the holding cells full every night of this event. She even got a small cut from a knife in the pocket of one of the arrested people while patting down and frisking him. Next to the Volunteer firemen convention this is one of the more raunchy gathering of people.

The flea markets and produce stands have great looking tomatoes this time of year. They almost look vine ripe until you eat one and they are bad disgusting tasting things. I have at least another month before I will be picking tomatoes in my garden.
I made a trip upcounty last week to Dover to visit the Delaware archives for some research. The Delaware general assembly is in session and it is next to the archives so finding a parking spot took a little more time. It is always a feast or famine situation at the archives. I either find a lot of information on the subject I am researching or I find nothing. This time was a good trip. This trip I was looking for information on the Bethesda Church School (School nr 40) over in Trap pond.
Every time I turn around it seems like some organization has their hand out for a donation or my taxes are being raised. I understand part of the Delmar Town budget are contributions to the Library and the fire departments. I usually make donations to them but since the town's contribution is part of my upcoming taxes I guess I am making an involuntary contribution to them in addition to what I have already made. Both are worthy organizations but there is only so much on my social security I can support. It's like having a drug addict, or an alcoholic or a gay member in your family; they are part of the family so even when you know they are doing wrong you can't turn your back on them. I see that Dr. Ring, after getting a tax increase thru for the school, is leaving the school for greener pastures.
Due to the drought out west places and towns that were flooded by the Hoover Dam construction in 1938 are reappearing. One is the town of St. Thomas Nevada. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1865 and named after one of the expedition’s leaders, Thomas Sassen Smith. The group was sent by Brigham Young to grow cotton and open a supply route to Utah via the Colorado River. At it's peak it had about 500 people. DNA testing is one of the tools used to track family trees. For a hundred dollars on up you can have your DNA taken and tested and compared to other people who have been tested and are doing family trees to see where you fit in. You don't think of it being used for anything else but family tree stuff. Recently however a police department got a court order to have Ancestry's DNA lab do a comparison and hand over data on a possible DNA match. It turned out to be a bad match but that very personal information is sitting out there for anyone to access. I was out to Cove Beach last week
This beach tends to be wildly popular in the summer. Right now you can walk on it and be the only one there. Wicomico County has marked off parking spaces for about ten cars and now it has "no parking" signs up and down the road leading back to the beach. They should have parking for about 50 vehicles.

You know you elect public officials to look out for your interests. Sussex Technical High School District is increasing taxes once again. The tax increase seems to be due to ambition, empire building and just generally knowing they will get away with it. They may not get all they want but they know they will get something and that something they can build on for the next tax increase. The solution, which none of our elected officials have the balls to do, is to fire the top six people at Sussex Tech. It sends an effective message to stay within the budget or get out.
Some of us may have taken German in school and recall how easy it seemed at first as German and English share a common background and then you start having to pronounce it correctly and do grammar and it just lost all it charm. It also has some fine points on capitalization such as;
