WDEL-FM/AM was honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) with one of its highest honors – the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence.
RTDNA’s Murrow Awards recognize outstanding work produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world. Its Overall Excellence award is given to news organizations that exemplify the highest standards in serving audiences through quality electronic journalism.
WDEL’s work in 2015 included comprehensive coverage of Delaware’s mourning the loss of Beau Biden, investigative reporting that uncovered several Wilmington City Council members who owed back taxes, breaking news coverage of the DuPont-Dow merger, specialty reporting on education in Delaware, contributions to Delmarva Broadcasting Company’s “Help Our Kids Radiothon” (which has raised over $1-million for Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children), and quarterly broadcasts featuring Delaware high school journalists.
“Whether it is breaking news, investigative reporting or compelling feature stories, I have long felt that WDEL is among the finest newsrooms in the country, and this award – our second in three years – validates that,” said Chris Carl, WDEL’s Director of News and Programming. “But beyond professional awards, we take even greater joy in serving our community by keeping them informed with unique content and information.”
WDEL will accept the Murrow award at a black tie awards ceremony in New York City on October 10, 2016.
It is one of more than two dozen awards WDEL has won this year, including the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association “News Operation of the Year” award, the Delaware Press Association award for “Best Newscast,” and Delaware Today’s “Best of Delaware” Award for “Best Station for News – Upstate.”
