Business Context and Main Purpose of the Job:

The role sits within Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre, which is responsible for carrying out safety assessments of all Unilever products.

The role will involve leading and conducting the experimental design, execution, interpretation and reporting of in vitro biotransformation data to project teams in support of Unilever’s alternatives to animal testing programme.

You will provide leadership in the area of bioanalysis related to the ADME of chemicals as well as general biochemical expertise to inform risk assessment.

Specifically you will work closely in a project team exploring the application of modeling to provide advanced exposure assessments for consumers using Unilever products.

You will be required to work with a range of scientific experts in a number of different disciplines, including toxicologists, ecotoxicologists, computational chemists, microbiologists and occupational safety experts to translate analytical output into biological context.

Main Accountabilities:

Using an understanding of metabolic assays, their limitations and applicability, interpret metabolic pathways and identify metabolites

Develop innovative and novel approaches in bioanalysis/biotransformation to support exposure measurement, kinetic and mechanistic understanding of toxicity

Provide biochemistry input to help build and validate predictive models related to toxicology

Use sample preparation (e.g. SPE, SPME, partitioning techniques), chromatography (LC, GC) and hyphenated mass spectrometry techniques in the development and validation of methods for analysis of test substances, metabolites, contaminants, breakdown products, etc. in test matrices, biological samples and in-vitro/in-vivo/ex-vivo systems

Communicate with both experts and non-experts and publish scientific work internally and externally

Influence the internal scientific research strategy

Ensure scientific quality of experimental work and comply with the internal quality system in our GLP accredited facility.

Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

Demonstrable practical experience in biotransformation assays and experimental metabolite identification techniques

Experience of using computational systems to predict metabolites and kinetics

Experience of bioanalytical LC-MS/MS method development and troubleshooting for quantitative analysis of compounds in diverse biological or complex matrices

Experience of trace level bioanalytical sample preparation techniques

Experience of metabolism modeling with knowledge of PBPK is desirable

GLP Study Director experience is desirable

PhD in relevant field or relevant BSc or equivalent with equivalent experience

Strong problem solving capability

Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to convey complex scientific subject matter in a simple manner

Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams on research problems, contributing to scientific strategy.
