Background

This role sits within the Sourcing Unit Quality team focused on improving the quality of packaging materials, finished products and repacked products from the Leeds Sourcing Unit.

Main Job Purpose:

The primary focus will be the reduction of quality losses by focusing on the following key areas:-

• Champion quality awareness activities which promote the development of quality culture ie. Quality Conversations, Quality Near Misses, etc • Ensure regular review of WCM Quality Pillar improvement projects to address root causes and prevent re-occurrence are being progressed & closed out. • Ensure compliance with all relevant ISO 9001, Unilever guidelines and quality legislation • Lead Sourcing Unit response to complaints from Unilever MSOs/MCOs, customers and consumers . • Ensure that feedback to the Operation is regular and timely in respect of packaging materials

• Ensure that robust processes are used for the management of defective packed stock such that the blocking of stock is effective and only approved concessioned product is released. • Pursue all quality incident investigations to their conclusion with route cause, counter measures and action closure. • Development and implementation of improvement programmes at suppliers; the progression of rigorous improvement action plans where material supply issues cause a loss to the factory operation. • Line Management responsibility

• Gaps in audits or legislative requirements • Where issues have occurred investigating to find the root cause and putting preventative actions in place to avoid reoccurrence.

Structure:

Reporting to the Site Quality Manager, the Packing Quality Leader is a member of the Quality leadership team and has a team of three technicians reporting to it.

Key Dimensions:

The role’s primary focus is to be the site champion for finished product quality and key contact with packaging suppliers when related to quality. The Packing Quality Leader will support the leadership team to drive the quality performance and awareness of the site at an operational level.

They will audit the performance of quality management systems ensuring full compliance with ISO 9001.

The Packing Quality Leader will also support the Site Quality Manager to develop strategic improvement plans and management programmes.

Key Accountabilities:

SAFETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT • Through application of Quality standards, ensure that finished products do not present a risk to consumers or Unilever employees. Particular focus should be made on aerosol safety (eg transportation and integrity of products). • Ensure that through standards applied to packaging materials we do not present a risk to Unilever employees. • Ensure that finished products and the materials used can be quickly and accurately traced to limit any potential consumer safety hazards. • Lead and support quality activities that ensure that operational performance does not create safety or environmental concerns.

• Liaison with the Safety & Environment leaders on all quality defects potentially causing safety or environmental issues and category quality on issues across many countries. • Supporting site ambition to reduce waste

QUALITY • Ensure compliance with all relevant ISO 9001, Unilever guidelines and quality legislation, Activities include o Identifying applicable legislation, standards and guidelines. o Evaluating compliance. o Conducting audits. o Implementing remedial/improvement activities. o Ownership of quality related documentation/ processes to support compliance with the Integrated Management System. • Lead Sourcing Unit response to complaints from Unilever MSOs/MCOs, customers and 3PL providers by co-ordinating the packed product, packaging, process and operation investigations, liaising with Category Quality and acting as a key contact to respond to the MSOs/MCOs ensuring that this is completed in a timely fashion. • Ensure that feedback to the Operation is regular and timely in respect of packaging materials via weekly and monthly review forums, factory boards and briefing documents as appropriate. • Understand the World Class Manufacturing pillars and acquire appropriate training and skills (Quality, Autonomous Maintenance, Professional Maintenance, Focused improvement as a minimum.) • Lead and support the implementation and ongoing improvement activities associated with the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Quality Pillar. • Ensure trough regular review of WCM QA matrix, that top losses are identified and communicated within operation. Ensure improvement projects to address root causes and prevent re-occurrence are being progressed. • Carry out cross-auditing and benchmarking of quality performance against internal and external sources. • Keep abreast of all new developments in these fields (ie legislation and best practices). Communicate and implement such initiatives as necessary. • Ensure that robust processes are used for the management of defective packed stock such that the blocking of stock is effective and only approved concessioned product is released. • Ensure that robust processes are used for the management of packaging materials such that the quarantine and rejection of stock is effective; as is selective release of materials for trial purposes. • Perform regular quality audits and inspections, and use the findings to drive the performance improvement. These may include Departmental Inspections, Internal and External Audits and Quality Pillar Self Assessment Reviews. • Pursue all quality incident investigations to their conclusion with route cause, counter measures and action closure...

Liaise with investigator and assist in formulation of solutions. • Monitor and analyse quality performance, trend and report at multi-level internally and externally. • Manage, develop and improve the site Quality systems

• Lead or support the appropriate Quality meetings. • Assist all members of the department in fulfilling their obligations as defined in legislation, ISO9001 and internal guidelines/standards • Supplier management: ensure that annual targets are set for each supplier via review of data and agreement with suppliers of areas for improvement. • Supplier management: ensure that effective channels of communication exist with suppliers for the resolution of routine issues. • Escalation where necessary to the relevant Unilever procurement manager in the situation of major supplier issues. • Development and implementation of improvement programmes at suppliers; to include supplier visits and the progression of rigorous improvement action plans where material supply issues cause a loss to the factory operation. • Line Management responsibility e.g. absence management, targets, recruitment, developing team members.

CUSTOMER SERVICE • Provide an accurate and effective response to MSO/MCO issues, communicating clearly and promptly. • Provide a quick and effective decision making on the fate of substandard stock to minimise the impact of quality non-conformance on the consumer, market, logistics and factory operation. • Act as primary contact for major quality incidents both internal and external. • Lead and support activities related to the potential recall of finished goods from the market. Act as deputy to the Site Quality Manager, and lead this activity in their absence. • Support the leadership team in continuous improvement of quality performance across the site, fully embracing the principles of WCM. • Carry out promotional and awareness work related to the Quality Programme.

FINANCIAL • Lead identification of substandard stock and manage fate with logistic and repack personnel, producing necessary disposal information. • Utilise SAP (e.g. by releasing orders) to support the department’s operation. • Inputs into the forward development and planning of the capital plan for the factory to ensure adequate provision is made for quality related expenditure. • Work closely with the engineering functions on major capital projects to ensure sufficient capital is devoted to the quality aspects of investment proposals, and risk assessments are completed.

PEOPLE • Ensure that the packing quality department technicians are aware of, and carry out, the necessary quality activities to comply with legislation and internal standards and specifications. • Ensure that other departments are aware of, and carry out, the necessary quality activities to comply with legislation and internal standards. • Provide coaching for the teams to facilitate improvement in quality performance. • Facilitate ownership of quality issues by Leadership teams and individuals through the application of existing knowledge and future training. • Facilitate employee empowerment on quality issues and the development of a quality culture

TRAINING • Carry out Training in support of the Quality Programme (including any training related to packed stock and verification of operators). • Assist the Leadership team in the development/monitoring of training needs analysis for all roles. • Support the process of ensuring compliance with these training requirements.

Provide and source appropriate training.
