In 1999, Pakistan violated mutually agreed policy of leaving the high altitude post of Kargil sector due to extreme winter conditions, soldiers of both the army’s use to came downhill during winter season.

In May of 1999 Pakistani Army along with Mujahideens intruded in Indian territory and started camping in Indian outpost, after the winter went off a patrol of Indian Army was dispatched but they were captured by Pakistani Soldiers, they were tortured and then killed by the Pakistani’s. The Patrol was of Captain Sourabh Kalia of Jat Regiment.

Indian casualties in this region and in such manner made the higher authorities doubtful about the intensity of the hostile activity, about any major intrusion and when the intelligence and other patrol party’s confirmed the reports of massive intrusion in Indian territory. After that whole nation gone furious, people were demanding war with Pakistan, forth war with Pakistan.

During Kargil war India lost 527 soldiers, but we got many heroes too, one of them is Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav, who hailed from 18 Grenadier’s Ghatak Platoon,  tasked to capture three strategic bunkers on Tiger Hill in the early morning hours of 4 July 1999. The bunkers were situated at the top of a vertical, snow-covered, 16,500 foot high cliff face. Yadav, volunteering to lead the assault, climbed the cliff face and installed ropes that would allow further assaults on the feature. Halfway up, an enemy bunker opened up machine gun and rocket fire, killing the platoon commander and two others. In spite of having been hit by three bullets in his groin and shoulder, Yadav climbed the remaining 60 feet and reached the top. Though severely injured, he crawled to the first bunker and lobbed a grenade, killing four Pakistani soldiers and neutralizing enemy fire. This gave the rest of the platoon the opportunity to climb up the cliff face.

Yadav then charged the second bunker along with two of his fellow soldiers and engaged in hand-to-hand combat, killing four Pakistani soldiers. The platoon subsequently succeeded in capturing Tiger Hill. The Param Vir Chakra was announced for Yadav posthumously, but it was soon discovered that he was recuperating in a hospital, and it was his namesake that had been slain in the mission
