A huge thanks goes out to The Dream Bed™ for sponsoring this post. I’m very picky about what brands get featured on Charming Imperfections and this one met and surpassed all my criteria. All opinions of comfy, cozy beds with a mission are totally my own. Read my full disclosure here.

Bedrooms are for sleeping in. What?!?

Sometimes in my crazy decorating/DIY mission to turn our home into an adorable cottage I forget about a room’s function. It’s easy to get caught up in paint colors, décor pieces, and layout and completely miss the fact that we will actually be living in the spaces we create.

That is what brought me to brainstorming this topic for our Master bedroom. I’m planning for it to be the next room we remodel and have been researching and Pinning ideas and inspiration for months. Of course, I want it to be a pretty farmhouse style room that I can proudly post about on this blog, but more than that, I have dreams of it being a retreat for Mr. Charming and me:

I’ve created a list of 10 must have elements for a peaceful bedroom retreat for myself to guide my decorating decisions and can’t wait to share it with you!

The Bed of your Dreams

If bedrooms are for sleeping, then getting this part right is the most crucial of all. In the hours I’ve spent researching design ideas I had pinned hundreds of DIY headboard ideas but never once thought of the actual function of this crucial piece of furniture!

The mattress!

How could I have been so silly? Beautiful headboards mean nothing when you are attempting to rest on an old mattress that gives you more pain than peace!

That is where The Dream Bed comes in. Getting this mattress was like Christmas for me; I’d never had a brand new one before (especially not such a luxury one with layers of memory foam). For a busy Mom like me, having an awesome “grown up” mattress like this is heaven.

Oh, and another thing I love about The Dream Bed is how easy it is to purchase online. They offer free 2 day shipping and a 180 day guarantee in case you don’t like it (but trust me, you will love it). Having a peaceful master bedroom retreat means not getting stressed out about buying a mattress, right?

Soft, Cozy Bedding

Another thing to make your master bedroom the retreat you need and deserve is having soft, cozy bedding. This is the one area I plan to splurge on because it’s pretty important.

This is also an area I had originally only looked at design for, but am now looking more into function. The pillows, sheets, and blankets you should look for are first, warm and comfortable, and second, add to the look of your room.

Can you just imagine getting into bed after a cold snowy day and feeling plush clouds of indulgent bedding all around you? Hmmm, I can!

Minimal “stuff”

There’s nothing that stresses me out more than a messy house and when the mess overflows into our bedroom, I can pretty much kiss sleep goodbye!

I’ve been learning lately that clutter=mess. The more “stuff” you have the more you have to take up precious thought and energy on managing it. That is why the #3 element of having a peaceful master bedroom retreat is to minimalize your stuff.

Get rid of clothes you don’t wear, decorations you don’t like, things you don’t use and, trust me, you will rest easier knowing your life is that much simpler.

Along with minimalizing your stuff, make sure you have proper storage space for the things you have to have. Well organized closets and dressers will bring so much peace to your bedroom and life.

Peaceful colors

When we moved into our house our bedroom was bright, bright red.

At first I thought it would be fun to try living with such a bright color, but as the year passed that color was wearing me down. It was too shocking and alerting and definitely not conducive to rest and relaxation.

When designing your master bedroom retreat, try using pale, muted colors.

I love neutrals anyway, but I think they are especially beautiful in a room where you’ll spend most of your time becoming centered and refreshed.

Lamp Lighting

Ceiling lights are great, but when you are in your master bedroom you need to have the option of soft, task lighting for reading and winding down for the night. Picking out a couple of lamps that both look great and are situated for easy access from your comfy, cozy bed is the perfect way to get great, inexpensive master bedroom lighting.

Temperature Control

No, I don’t mean install an entirely separate heating/cooling system for your master bedroom (unless if you can afford it, then by all means), I’m talking about affordable ways to implement temperature control in your bedroom retreat.

After all, what’s more calming than warmth on a cold night, or cool sheets when you’ve been hot all day?

The Dream Bed has a mattress option with a cooling layer that is perfect for nights when you would otherwise be sweating and hot. How perfect is that?

For cooler times of the year, we love our electric blanket. I suggest getting one with dual control to prevent fights over turning up or lowering the heat (another thing that wouldn’t promote sleep).

Window Treatments

While I’m a huge fan of letting in all the natural light you can, the bedroom is one place where good window treatments are a must.

First off, having good blinds or curtains are needed for privacy. They are also good for blocking out the light for midday naps.

If you want your master bedroom to be a true retreat, look into getting good window treatments.

Good smells

This might seem silly, but I believe in comforting all my senses while in our master bedroom retreat and the sense of smell is a powerful when it comes to relaxing or reviving the mind.

Candles give such good aroma and are also pretty to look at. I know many who love their essential oils diffusers. Even Glade plugins would do the trick. Whatever you do, remember that this is one of those touches you don’t want to miss.

Family Photos/Meaningful Quotes

I rarely decorate with art and prefer to use family photos or something of personal value for our walls and shelves. I think that is what truly makes a house into a “home”. Seeing the precious memories captured on camera and framed on our walls sparks joy in people’s hearts.

That is why I suggest putting really meaningful things in your master bedroom like photos and quotes or signs with important dates on them. You will be reminded of what’s most important and precious in your life every time you step through that bedroom door.

Sense of Peace and Goodwill

You are all familiar with the saying, “don’t go to bed angry”, well, how about, don’t go to bed feeling selfish? There is nothing more upsetting than trying to sleep when you feel you haven’t done any good in the world the day before.

On the flip side, there is nothing more wonderful than laying your head on your pillow and realizing that you made a positive difference in someone’s life that day.

This, to me, is the most important thing to remember when making your dream home. We can fill empty rooms with all the expensive “things” money can buy, but when your heart is void of love and caring, you might as well be living in a metaphorical box.

This is what makes The Dream Bed stand out from all the other mattress companies out there. For every bed purchased, one is donated to a family in need here in the United States. When you receive your new mattress you can sleep easy knowing that you made a difference in the world by giving someone else who is in desperate need and poverty the gift of a good night’s sleep.

So there you have it: 10 must have elements for a peaceful master bedroom retreat. They are: the bed of your dreams, soft cozy bedding, minimal “stuff”, peaceful colors, lamp lighting, temperature control, window treatments, good smells, family photos, and a sense of peace and goodwill.

I hope you will continue to check back to see how we implement these concepts and transform our master bedroom. And, more importantly, I hope you are able to make your own master bedroom the retreat you need and deserve.

By the way, The Dream Bed is going to be having a Twitter party using the hashtag #dreamitforward to talk more about their mission to give a mattress to a family in need each time a Bed in a Box is purchased! It will be this Thursday, October 29th between 8:30am PT – 9:15am PT / 11:30am ET – 12:15pm ET and everyone who tweets during the Twitter event using the #DreamitForward hashtag will automatically be entered to win awesome prizes!
