Interview with T.K. Harris

What do you do while writing? TV? Radio? Radio.  Depending on what I'm writing or working on with the book, I'm either listening to something like Moby or Skrillex.

Do you use names of people you know in your book?

Yes and No.  What I mean is, I'll pick names and features from different people I know and then mesh them together with other features and personalities – most of it made up – in order to create a character.

Is it hard to research your story to make sure it is new and different?

In the case of Phantom Dreams, no.  I was familiar with the area because I used to live in that region and I kept too many "researchable" ideas out of this book mainly because this was my first attempt from going from selling short stories to a novel and that was hard enough.

BUT, in the book I'm writing now – The Gillespie Five – research is definitely hard.  I've read so many books and articles on hackers, hacking, the NSA, FBI, etc that I'm waiting for one of those U.S.  Military drones to show up outside my office window!

What is your favorite book? Just one?!  Impossible.  I can't name just one.  Starting from my childhood favorites like all the Alice and Wonderland and Nancy Drew books to everything from fantasy and sci-fi to more mysteries.  I love them all!

What is your favorite song? The River by Garth Brooks.  I don't want to be that person just standing on the shoreline and watching my dreams slip away without becoming a reality.

What is the one thing in your house you can not live without? (pets and family excluded).   My laptop with internet connection.

What is the oldest thing in your refrigerator?   I'm not sure.  But I think I've started a new life form.

What would you like my readers to know?  Don't doubt yourself.  If you write, you're a writer.  And if you're willing to put in hours upon hours of hard work for someone else, why wouldn't you do the same for yourself?  Just write that book already and spend the time to do it write, er, I mean right.

BLURB

FBI Special Agent Jack Matthews finds himself on yet another serial killer case, having barely recovered from the last disastrous hunt. Still stiff from a gun shot wound in his leg, under investigation for a botched job, and having lost his fiancée when she walked out on him, Jack is beginning to wonder if it isn’t time to move on to something new. But, for Jack, these cases are personal and he can’t say no.

Marketing specialist Kathy Gilliam leads a fairly boring life. If she’s not working or caring for her ailing father, then she is doing whatever it takes to avoid going anywhere near crowds of people. Her few distractions include her friend Margo Longfellow, occasional hiking trips, and her increasingly alarming dreams of women dying.

As her nightmares cause her to begin to doubt her sanity, the media releases news of the “Coast-to-Coast Killer” and Kathy discovers her dreams may be related. In a moment of panic, Kathy does something that places her on the FBI’s “persons of interest” list. Suddenly, her life is set on a collision course with Jack who must decide if Kathy is the killer or destined to become a victim.

T.K. Harris was born long, long ago in a galaxy (known as California), far, far away and promptly shipped unceremoniously out of the country to spend the next several years living in the Netherlands (in a cupboard under the stairs). Upon return to the U.S. at the ripe old age of 8ish, Harris spent the next several years in a variety of states growing up (sort of) to become a software engineer and IT manager, traveling and living in even more states as well as other countries.
Harris has been writing since childhood and, through the years, has had several short stories published by various magazines, including one in Woman's World. Phantom Dreams is Harris's first published novel.
Harris currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado as a Senior Solutions Architect and IT Instructor and is working on the next book: The Gillespie Five.
