Top stories about the deaf:

The New Zealand Human Rights Commission said that

many deaf people are being denied their human right

to use sign language to communicate.

Agnes Farnsworth was pushed out as a volunteer

after 17 years with the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program as a driver. Angry she filed a complaint

and the Maine Human Rights Commission said that her

deafness was the reason for the termination. The

non-profit agency has to respond to the commission

ruling.

The Deaf House Cafe is in business in Wuhan, Hubei

province of China. The three owners of this cafe

are deaf.

Teachers at Lexington School for the Deaf in New

DEAF PEOPLE AT DEAF CONVENTIONS

DeafDigest editor has noticed that at many deaf conventions,

MANY DEAF IMMIGRANTS FROM INDIA IN GREAT BRITAIN

There are many immigrants that move to Great Britain. One of them

was a national-level athlete who happened to be deaf.

Why did he move to England? He said discrimination against his

deafness prevented him from taking part in the Olympics (hearing)

and in world championship events.

He is right now, too old to compete on an international level,

and is somewhat bitter about it.

A SOCIAL SERVICE ISSUE AT A DEAF HOME IN GREAT BRITAIN

What is a social service worker supposed to do? To make sure

clients, in need, have access to healthcare, housing and

social security checks.

Add one more? Broken down signaling devices equipment? When a deaf British family complained about a broken down

signaling device, the equipment provider immediately contacted

a social worker.

The deaf family tried to explain to the social worker that

everything was fine and that the social work services wasn’t

needed. It was just the broken equipment that needed replacement.

Things can get too far in Great Britain!

WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?

According to a web site, deaf means people who cannot hear well enough to understand speech and unable to use speech.

True?

No. There are late deafened people that still speak very well.

There are few deaf people with near-perfect speaking skills.

And again there are some deaf people that make use of their

hearing aids or CI to be able to speak well.

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Why was the famous Deaf Education Program at Western

Maryland College (now McDaniel College) founded?

A. David Denton, former superintendent of Maryland School

for the Deaf (MSD), needed a pool of new teachers with MA degrees

and felt Western Maryland College, not too far from Frederick

was the best option. But instead of providing teachers for

MSD, it provided teachers for other schools for the deaf!
