“Signing On” Documentary at Harris Communications
“Signing On” is a documentary about Deaf breast cancer survivors,
their families and the Deaf community.
The idea for the film came after a local television interview with
Anita Buel, a Deaf breast cancer survivor and founder of the Pink
Deafies, caused an Internet sensation with women from 22 states
contacting the rising star.
The documentary tells the story of five deaf breast cancer survivors
who struggle with communication in the hearing-dominated healthcare
system. It follows Anita Buel, a two-time cancer survivor and founder
of the sole support group for Deaf women in the country.
For deaf women who are fighting breast cancer, this film lets you
know you are not alone.
For healthcare providers, the film provides insight into the concerns
that Deaf women have as they deal with breast cancer and the
healthcare system.
“Signing On” (DVD429) is available at Harris Communications for
$30.00. Limited number of copies are available. Film is in ASL with
English subtitles/voice over.

TYPING VERSUS WRITING
It is always puzzling that hearing people, that
type very fast but write very slow, prefer notes
to communicate with the deaf.
For a simple sentence, a hearing person can
type it in 5 seconds, but it takes them five
minutes to write this same sentence on paper.
You ask them to please type down on computer
or email or IM instead of writing. But they
are stubborn and prefer to write.
It is a waste of time, waiting a long time
for them to write notes on paper!

Tuesday at Starbucks; 6 pm to 9 pm.
DeafDigest editor is afraid that some deaf people
will come to Starbucks on Tuesday night, order just
one cup of coffee and sit down for three hours with
their friends.
Is this bad manners to sit for three hours for only

Deaf Question of the Week:
Q. How many deaf individuals have earned doctorates?
A. Do not know. In the past, there were not that many
deaf people with doctorates, but because the number
has mushroomed, there is no way of keeping track.

Rene Pellerin’s corner:
Scolding the wrong person!
Rona wrote last week about her embarrassing moment
when repairman received a hug intended for her friend.
I too have had similar embarrassing moments!
One day I had to go to a film studio to produce a video.
Living in Vermont, there are very limited options for public
transportation.
The only choice I had was to go leave home early in the
morning following my wife’s schedule!
I settled in at Starbucks waiting for a friend to meet me and bring
me to the film studio.
It turned out to be a 3 hours wait! My friend was one and half hours
late meeting me. (A total of 3 hours of waiting!)
I was sitting facing the window so I could read my iPad more easily.
Then, she tapped me on my shoulder and I yelled at her for being
inappropriately late!
Oops, I yelled at the wrong person. A sweet interpreter friend had
happened by Starbucks!
She was standing in front of the window and she was all “BLACK”!
My vision only gave me the silhouette of a female in dark clothing.
Her friendly impromptu “Hello” resulted in a lambasting (apologies!)
Now I better check who’s there!
Rene’s show business is now entering its 3rd year and it
focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
