Top stories about the deaf:

Do we have too many proposed sign language gloves?

There is another one – a team of students from the

Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Paysandú in

Uruguay has come up with such a glove. It is supposed

to convert sign language to printed words on the

computer screen.

Jimmy Gore, who teaches at Gallaudet and is deaf, has

won a Fulbright award to teach his English Language learning method for the deaf in the Czech Republic.

A British hearing man Albert Davenport went to hospital

for treatment for his swollen leg. He came home as a

deaf man. Doctors gave him twice the dose of antibiotics.

The hospital was forced to him £40,000 in damages.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Government (DHHIG) plans

to amend its mission to read as: “DHHIG empowers Deaf and Hard of Hearing Federal Employees to overcome communication barriers, resolve accessibility issues, and promote a fully

inclusive work environment through networking and fostering professional growth”

The Social Security Administration wants to evaluate the criteria

on what defines hearing loss.

OUR STUBBORN DEAF HANDYMEN

We have many deaf people that are great handymen.

They can build anything – often better than hearing

handymen.

There is one problem – communications. When these

deaf handymen have a problem during their projects,

they often do not go back to the hardware store to

get advice. It is because they are afraid to try

to communicate – and there may be misunderstandings.

As a result, some of them work 3-4 months on a

project that can be finished in one Saturday morning!

‘Hugging the wrong person!’

For anyone who has Usher Syndrome, the common symptoms would be:

having difficulty seeing a person or object in ‘dark or dimly lit’

areas.

When René wrote: “Party Time!”, the story has a very familiar ring.

If a family member informs you that a family friend is coming soon

for a visit, you prepare yourself to greet this anticipated friend.

This happened to me!  I walked into our ‘dark, dimly lit’ foyer.  I

was expecting to greet our” family friend” in there talking with a family member.  I assumed that I knew who that “visitor” was and I immediately jumped to hug the “visitor” with a joyous and surprised hello.

I quickly felt my family member gently pull me back and explain to me

with embarrassment, this supposed “family friend / visitor” is a service-repairman!

Oh,  whooooops! Red-faced here!

Rene’s show business is now entering its 3rd year and it

focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
