LightOn Cell Phone Signaling at Harris Communications
The popular DreamZon LightOn is a battery-operated cell phone signaler that can be used at home, work or even on vacation to alert you when you get a new call or text message.
It has no audible alert mode, so you can use it without disturbing co-workers or sleeping infants. LightOn is designed to work with
most cell phones that have a vibrate mode.
Simply set your phone to vibrate and place your phone in the LightOn cradle. When your phone vibrates, the LightOn senses the vibrations and will flash a bright LED light until you reset it, ensuring that you do not miss any calls or messages.
An optional bed shaker for the LightOn is available separately for vibration notification.
The LightOn Cell Phone Signaler is available in black or white for just $49.95!

Top stories about the deaf:
There is a project at DePaul University in Chicago to develop an ASL/English translator; some of the signs will be in 3D animation format.
South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, a Coda, gave a speech
at a local gathering, praising employers for hiring the
deaf and the disabled.
For years deaf educators in Ontario could not become
administrators for one reason – discrimination. Finally
Janice Drake, a deaf woman, became the first deaf principal
of a deaf school – Sir James Whitney School for the
Deaf at Belleville. Just hope the low enrollment numbers
could be reversed on her watch.
Passengers walking through the entrance of the Ernakulam Junction
railroad station in Kochi, a city sitting on the west coast of India, will notice pieces of artwork on the walls.
These pieces were done by artist K. B. Unnikrishnan. He
is deaf; his real job is working on the railways but his
boss, knowing his artistic skills, allowed him to paint
the walls.
There is discussion in Arkansas about the Arkansas Department of Education ignoring the needs of the deaf. The feeling is
that priorities have changed for one simple reason – that
older personnel have retired and the newer replacement
personnel do not share the philosophy!

DEAF ATHLETE ANGRY ABOUT DEAFLYMPICS FUNDRAISING
In USA, Deaflympics participants must raise their own funds.
Many years ago, a famous deaf sports leader Art Kruger helped
raise funds for all American Deaflympics participants. Times
have changed. Each athlete must raise their own funds.
A true story during 1960′s. A famous deaf athlete lived in
a small town. Unemployment was high. Poverty was everywhere.
People were poor and broke.
Art Kruger sent a letter to the town, asking to donate money
for the famous deaf athlete.
The famous deaf athlete was very angry about it. He felt it
was not right to ask poor people to donate money, and he quit
the Deaflympics!

AT A SIGN LANGUAGE CAFE IN PARIS
DeafDigest editor and his wife had a lunch at Cafe
Signes in Paris. Six of nine restaurant workers are deaf;
everyone uses sign language.
This cafe is popular with hearing people in the
neighborhood.
DeafDigest editor ordered his lunch to eat at outside
table. The waiter brought the food but forgot to bring
the wine.
The waiter was already inside the restaurant. It was easy
for DeafDigest editor to use sign language through the
window to tell the waiter to bring the wine!
Hearing people cannot do that. The deaf can!

A DEAF WORKSHOP IN CONNECTICUT
A workshop for the deaf took place in Norwich, Connecticut.
The goal was to how to better inform the deaf of emergencies -
more specifically these hurricanes.
This program was coordinated by The state Department of Rehabilitative Services, the Norwich Emergency Management Department and the Disabilities Network of Eastern Connecticut.
THE ANGRY HEARING PEOPLE OF HAMPSHIRE COUNTY
Hampshire County is located in West Virginia. Romney is located
in that county and it is the site of West Virginia School for the
Deaf and Blind.
This school is the biggest employer in Romney. And so, the mere hint of the school moving elsewhere, attracted a standing room
only crowd at the community forum last week.
The state board, toying with the idea of moving, said they
appreciate the comments how much the school means to the county
residents.

Deaf Question of the Week:
Q. What is an Audiogram?
A. Too complicated to explain; O’s on the chart means
right ear; X’s on the chart means left ear. O’s and X’s
on the chart show responses to different frequencies.
Only an audiologist will understand these charts in
depth.

Rene Pellerin’s corner:
Party time!
I just had my 60th birthday party yesterday. Many friends came to celebrate with me!
They didn’t realize my vision is not as good as it used to be.
I had to ask them “Who are you?” They often responded ”You know!”
Well folks, identifying friends and family members is getting difficult for me.
It all depend on the setting and where you are standing.
For example, if the sun or a window is in the background, it makes your face darker and I likely cannot recognize you!
So friends, they have a hard time figuring out when I am not joking!
The safest response to a friend with Usher Syndrome when they ask who you are is to go ahead and sign your name sign or spell your name…likely
they are not joking.
Rene’s show business is now entering its 3rd year and it
focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
