TWO CODA CLASSMATES

A hearing school has two Coda students. They

are fluent with ASL.

They use ASL all the time – during boring classes,

they talk to each other in ASL by hiding their signs

from the teacher. At school cafeteria, one Coda from

across the room, signs to another Coda to pick up

extra dish for me. And during sports games, they

sign to each other on the field to plan the plays

and moves.

YOU ARE DEAF AND ARE BREAKING THE LAW IF

You were living in the Year 1930 and resided in

Ontario, CA and raised roosters on your property – and

made the mistake of letting these roosters crow!

The town ordinance made such crowing illegal. A hearing

person could hear the rooster crow and somehow hush it up

before the crow-police would make its rounds. The deaf

person, on the other hand, would have no clue!
