Top stories about the deaf:

The White House has selected five students to serve

as interns. One of these new interns is Amanda Koski,

a Gallaudet student. And on the Capitol Hill, Alexander

Van Hook, a NTID/RIT student served as intern with the

office of the U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, Washington

state. Just hope that our politicians which have serious

problems agreeing with each other, will listen to advice

and wisdom from our two deaf student interns!

The Department of Homeland Security has come up

with a new real-time emergency alert messages

to inform the deaf of emergencies in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Around

500 deaf families will be given these alerting

devices on an experimental basis.

The Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania

is coming up with Facts Sheets and videos

to educate the deaf on their medical rights.

The British Equality Human Rights Commission

is now pushing web developers to make their

web products deaf-accessible.

A DEAF FRUSTRATION IN RESTAURANT

What is a big Deaf Frustration in a restaurant?

You agree to meet a deaf friend at a restaurant. You

arrive first before him, and you tell the waiter that

you are waiting for your friend.

The waiter does not understand you and gives you

a hard time. Even if you point to your watch and

tell him “5 minutes” the waiter still does not

understand you!

A BOX MAKES PEACE BETWEEN DEAF AND HEARING EMPLOYEES

A deaf man and a hearing man did not get along in

a workplace office. They were always arguing over many

things.

The hearing man was rude. He would confront the deaf

man, pointing to the mistake deaf man made with paperwork.

And the hearing man would not listen when the deaf man

tried to explain that it was not an error.

Then there was peace. How? The boss set up two boxes

on top of a table in the office. One box was for the

deaf employee. The other box was for the hearing employee.

If they wish to communicate or to pass papers with

each other, they put these in the box.

No more face to face. Just box to box. Peace!

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Why are sign language classes valuable even if the

hearing students still cannot learn how to sign?

A. Once they’re exposed to a deaf ASL teacher, their

fear of the deaf disappears – meaning if they work on

the cash register and a deaf customer comes up, they

won’t run away out of fear!

send your questions to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

Fall Hiking

Hiking the mountain trails is popular in Vermont.

The Fall is the most popular time.

Comfortable weather and the changing of colors!

I searched for volunteers to be my support buddies to hike the trails.

The organization who provides volunteers insists that I give them at least 2 weeks notice in advance.

The frustrating part is not knowing the condition of the weather that far in advance!

Well, it turned out that it was going to rain and snow and the whole thing is cancelled.

The prior two weeks, the weather was picture perfect.

But I am asked to assess the weather two weeks in advance per their policy.

So hunting and winter is around the corner which mean wait till next year.

I will console myself with dusting off my snowshoes.
