Top stories about the deaf:
The National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux
received a grant to train volunteers, fluent in
British Sign Language. These volunteers, upon
training, will be able to serve the deaf community
in a variety of roles. Areas to be served are
Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Derby and Coventry.
What is Deaf and what is deaf? We all know what
both terms mean. A student at University of
Nebraska wanted to make a clarification in the
campus newspaper. He said deaf is for those that
can’t hear, and that Deaf is for those that
wish for a cultural identification.
NTID has won a $540,000 grant for three years.
Goal is to see if low public expectations of
deaf capabilities and skills would impact on
the way they learn (or do not learn) math.
University of York, in Great Britain, has mandated
that captions appear on all campus videos – even
if there are no deaf people around!
Going on right now is a hot debate in Vermont.
Issue is – how will the 650 impacted deaf children,
formerly served statewide by the closed Vermont
Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing be
taught. Vermont has 14 counties across the state.

RICH HEARING CONSULTANTS, POOR DEAF CONSULTANTS
Are hearing consultants rich and are deaf consultants
poor?
As an example, a hearing senator loses congressional
election, and is out of job. No worry. He becomes a
consultant and becomes a rich man with many consulting
contracts.
A deaf person loses a big job. He then becomes a
consultant. But will he become a rich man? No.
This is sad!

LOOKING AT PEOPLE AT THE BAR
A hearing person can enter the bar, sit down,
and just listen.
Examples are – a pro athlete discussing his new
contract with his agent; an author discussing his
new book with his book editor; a boyfriend telling
his girlfriend that it is time to break up, etc.
A deaf person knows nothing, and uses his eyes
to imagine things with them.

Deaf Question of the Week:
Q, I have seen the phrase – Deaf Geographies.
What is this all about?
A. Vague and murky but something to do with
reconciling Deaf Culture with Deaf Space
as well as with Deaf House. The planned space
across the street from Gallaudet is an
example of Deaf Geographies.
