Top stories about the deaf:

A story was written up about a cooperative in El Salvador

that trains the deaf for jobs, and successfully finds

employment for them.

The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education is having its

grand opening on October 24th on the campus of Indiana School

for the Deaf in Indianapolis. It was created out of a

controversial bill signed by then governor Mitch Daniels,

over strong objections of the Deaf Community. They felt that

Daniels was out to “destroy” Deaf Culture.

Merrie Sager, who was fired from her job with the Huntington Beach

(California) library after 32 years of employment, will have her

day in court with a jury trial. She has filed a job discrimination lawsuit, claiming that her repeated requests for an interpreter were

rebuffed each time.

Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee,

spoke at the gathering of the London School of Economics, saying

that discussions have already begun with the Deaflympics group

to involve deaf athletes in the 2020 Paralympics. The Deaflympics

group said no discussions have begun. Who is telling the truth?

The candidates for the alderman seats in Frederick, Maryland

said they all support the needs and causes of the deaf, saying

they’re very much familiar with Maryland School for the Deaf

sitting in their backyard. But when one of them win the

election, will they keep their deaf campaign promises?

Doubt it!

BROKE IRELAND IMPACTING ON THE DEAF

Ireland is broke. As a result, the Minister of Health

is forced to cut funds somewhere on the line – and he

is aiming to reduce funds that were earmarked for the

needs of deaf children.

The Manager of Interpreting Services is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the Interpreting Department at Deaf Adult Services including interpreter relations, customer satisfaction and vendor accounts . Participate as part of agency management team with Executive Director, Business Manager and Director of Advocacy and Community Education Services to ensure continuous quality and stability of programs.

Specific Duties:

. Supervise all interpreting services staff. Participate in annual review, hiring and any disciplinary measures needed.

. Review all customer contracts and prepare for signature

. Assess/evaluate the skills/certification of all interpreters at least annually

Teaching Specialist Position American Sign Language Program

The American Sign Language Program, Department of Educational Psychology, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time Teaching Specialist position in the area of American Sign Language.

Description:  This is a 9 month, Professional Academic (P&A) appointment, 100% time, annually renewable, non-tenured position that involves fulltime teaching, but includes time for course content preparation, student performance evaluation, professional development projects and meeting with individual students as needed.  This position focuses on teaching American Sign Language at the undergraduate level with responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

Teaching (90%: Provide instruction at the undergraduate levels, teaching courses in American Sign Language (ASL 1701, 1702, 3703, 3704, and 3705). The individual appointed will prepare course content; evaluate student performance, meet with individual students as needed and complete professional development assignments.

Other Duties (10%) Participate in internal program/department meetings. Provide external support services/outreach.  Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

.    Teach 6 sections of American Sign Language at the undergraduate level per Academic year.

.    Prepare course content

.    Evaluate student performance

.    Meet with individual students as needed

Minimum qualifications for Teaching Specialist Position:

.    BA/BS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or related fields (candidates with BA/BS in other fields will be considered only if that individual can provide evidence of two years full-time teaching ASL using the Signing Naturally Curriculum)

.    Native or Native-like fluency in ASL

Desired qualifications .    MA/MS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or related fields.

.    Two or more years teaching ASL using Signing Naturally curriculum, Levels I, II, and III.

Appointment Details:    The person hired will be appointed to a full time position as a Teaching Specialist beginning January 13, 2014 and ending May 25, 2014.

Position Summary The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University invites applications for a 9-month position at the Clinical Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) level beginning August 2014. The successful candidate will have a background in Deaf Education/ ASL Interpreting and provide leadership to a cooperative program between Salt Lake Community College Interpreter Training Program (Associate degree level) and Utah State University (Bachelor degree level), While a member of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education in Logan, UT, the successful candidate will be housed at the USU Regional Campus in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Responsibilities 1. Serve as a liaison between the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Interpreter Training Program and Utah State University (USU) Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education 2. Develop upper division undergraduate ASL and interpreting curricula leading to a bachelor degree in consultation with the SLCC Interpreter Training coordinator 3. Assess student ASL and interpreting competencies; provide supervision and mentoring to undergraduate students having completed a major in interpreting at SLCC and assist them in upper division curriculum choices to achieve their bachelor’s degree at USU 4. Teach 3-4 courses (12-16 credit hours) per semester (Fall and Spring) in American Sign Language, interpreter related courses, and Deaf culture courses, using current pedagogical practices 5. Present professional information to the profession and the public 6. Participate in state and national professional associations.

Minimum Qualifications 1. An earned doctorate degree in Deaf Education, Interpreting, Educational Administration and Supervision, Deaf Studies, ASL Linguistics, Instructional Design, or a related area 2. Demonstrated strength in ASL, interpreting, and English 3. Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and inter-higher education institution team 4. Advanced or superior proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high-level professional and academic conversations 5. State or national certification with American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Interpreter Certification (NIC)

Preferred Qualifications 1. Five years of teaching ASL/interpreting in higher education 2. Five or more years in Educational Administration /Supervision related to Deaf Education and/or interpreting; and, an in-depth knowledge of Deaf culture, deafness, and communication issues 3. Experience in curriculum development 4. International Deaf Education and/or interpreting experience 5. Record of writing and receiving grants related to Deaf Education and/or interpreting 6. Experience in community outreach and recruitment 7. Evidence of involvement and leadership on the national level in Deaf Education and/or interpreting (Council on Education of the Deaf, RID, etc.)

School Classroom Teacher: Future Transitions. This is a full-time 10 month

Qualifications:

addition, teachers work with other support personnel (e.g. therapists,

curriculum and behavior support staff, communication specialists, etc.) to

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization; techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom instructors; practical skills in effective interpersonal student contact; safe and timely response to special classroom situations. Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions; communicate clearly and effectively; enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form; deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism; maintain strict confidentiality.
