Top stories about the deaf:
When Colonel Gadaffi, the Libyan strongman, was overthrown, it took
the efforts of seven militia brigades to do the job. One of these
brigades was Misrata Deaf Brigade, all of these fighters being
deaf. This 100-strong brigade is claiming credit for the overthrow.
The annual Monroe County Elder Justice Summit, which focuses on issues
among the senior citizens in Monroc County, Michigan, has been
sponsored by the Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services. This is a twist -
a hearing workshop sponsored by a deaf agency.
The Taiwanese short film “Use Your Heart to Listen for Happiness” has
a deaf cast, including two leading deaf characters. It has been
winning praise in the Taiwanese press.
The AMC Theatres has agreed to place captions into their digital systems
in its 24 movie houses in New York State within a year from now.
DeafDigest is troubled in that it is for New York State only; we have
49 other states plus the District of Columbia.
India does not allow deaf people to drive cars. Amit Tribhuvan, who is
deaf, has challenged this law by asking the Bombay High Court to allow
him to obtain his learner’s permit. This case is now in the judicial
system and is being processed throughout it.

A DEAF CEO SHOCKED BY FIRING
This is a true story. DeafDigest will not mention who
the person is or what agency it was.
A deaf CEO was not happy about a deaf employee. He and the
deaf deputy CEO both agreed that the employee should be
fired.
The CEO wanted to be careful with words to inform the
employee that he was to be fired during a private meeting
between CEO, deputy CEO and the employee.
During that private meeting, the CEO had to go to the
restroom. When he came back, the employee was already
fired by the deputy CEO (without CEO’s permission).
The CEO was angry about it and also fired deputy CEO!

HATING PAPER AND PEN
Do hearing people hate paper and pen while deaf people
love paper and pen?
Often we go to a store, and tell the clerk you are deaf
and you need to write something on paper.
You watch (and laugh) for few minutes as the hearing
clerk runs all over, looking for a pen and a paper pad!

Deaf Question of the Week:
Q. Why are operations to restore hearing considered risky?
A. There are too many parts in the ear – earwax, fluid, inflammation, a cyst and others. One of them can go wrong, and the person may be
worse ever than before the operation!
send your questions to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
the most interesting questions may be answered in future DeafDigest editions. Thank you.

The official White Cane Safety Day is on October 15.
Every year organizations across the USA spread awareness to the public.
Many large cities plan White Cane Day by going out for a walk.
Often the governors and city mayors create a proclamation and involve the

a football team wins first game since 1978
Michigan School for the Deaf defeated Merritt 50-26 yesterday. It was
the school’s first football win since 1978. The school was winless
from 1979 to 1984 when this sport was dropped. Football was restarted
in 2009 and the school did not win any games each season until
yesterday’s game! Coach Sammy Oates, Jr said – hard to describe
the feeling but I know what I see. Players were popping their
helmets and jumping around. I was slow to react until I realized
it was a win. Some players were crying and said ‘now we understand
