Top stories about the deaf:

It is happening again. Last week it was mentioned that

a deaf choir was kicked out of Trafalgar Square in

London. A public outcry forced the city officials

to backtrack. Now it is happening at the Rushmere Shopping Centre in Armagh, Northern Ireland! Something

to do with the rule against soliciting for funds.

A perfect hearing aid? Well, a group of hearing aid

researchers at Ohio State University has claimed that

their prototype hearing aid will remove background

noise. They are saying the percentage is raised

from 10 percent to 90 percent on the level of understandability among the users. Fact or fiction?

US Armed Forces telling CI people what to do? This was

the possibility hinted by the Marine Maj. Gen. Bob Hedelund

in a recent speech. Concerned with many military vets

that go deaf, he wants the military forces to control

the direction the CI research and CI policies will go to.

Will this impact the vision by these CI manufacturers?

Do not know.

A big issue right now in United Kingdom is the Access

to Work regulations – with respect to how interpreters

are being paid and how are they to work with the deaf.

So angry Deaf Brits are about it that they signed a

petition that has already collected nearly 4,000 signatures.

Odessa Smith-Wallace, a deaf student, age 17,  at a school in London, has been selected to serve on

the Kent Youth County Council. She has been campaigning

for the rights of deaf and disabled in schools.

A THANKSGIVING DINNER

A deaf person was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner

by a hearing friend. No other deaf friends invited him

to dinners in their homes.

There is a choice – decline the dinner with hearing

group and stay home or accept the dinner with hearing

groups and be isolated during the dinner.

Which is best? Not easy decision.

DEAF STUCK AT WORK

A deaf person who wants to win promotion to a better

job and better pay, works very fast with his job tasks.

All the hearing people work at their normal pace with

their job tasks.

The boss told the deaf employee to slow down so that

hearing employees can catch up with him.

The deaf employee refused. As a result, he got everyone

in the office to hate him – and he was not promoted nor

got a pay raise.

Discrimination? Maybe not – he did not listen to his boss

to slow down.

This is the reason why rights and needs of the deaf and the

COLORS

I have learned from different folks with Usher Syndrome how various

colors affect their vision.

1 – When wearing sunglasses, sometimes a particular color glare

strikes at the corner of their eyes, making them think that their

tinted sunglasses might be wearing out from cleaning frequently.

Result – it is not the sunglasses!

2 – If you are wearing regular clear glasses and you are in a very

bright room, you may notice color glare reflections distracting you:

glare can cause a rainbow prism!

Result – it is not the glasses!

3 – Sometimes when you move suddenly, you may notice a color shield

appearing in front of you. Surprise! Your eyes spontaneously blink to

get rid of the disturbing / distracting color, but it just won’t go

away for hours!

Result-Our eyes are responding like wearing sunglasses!

Colors may come in many forms: grey, purple, pink, orange, yellow,

tan, red, etc.!

You can / may see the room shading to what appears to be in one or

two colors.

One may ask oneself: How or where in the world did those colors come

from?

Result – It’s really coming from our eyes themselves.

Your retina characteristics change as one progresses in age, meaning

that the retina can appear to be “washed out”.

As an analogy – it would be likened to one ‘pulling down the window

shades’.

Wouldn’t that be like a ‘kaleidoscope’ in your imagination?
