“Singing and Signing Hebrew Blessings and Songs”

“Singing and Signing Hebrew Blessings and Songs” is an instructional DVD that features basic sign language tips and signs for 8 easy blessings and songs, including the Shema and the Candles, Kiddush and Hamotzi blessings.

The instructor, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh, is known for her beautiful sign language interpretations of Hebrew songs. She is one of few individuals who sing and sign simultaneously. Judy uses sign language and music as a way to teach Hebrew and give greater meaning to our prayers.

The Durham County Council’s Community Action Team

in Great Britain has asked the deaf community to work

with them on ways to improve the town’s accessibility

to them.

The SL First, a new British print magazine for the deaf, already popular, is establishing an on-line version. DeafDigest is not sure if it is a local deaf community

magazine or a nationwide British magazine.

Mayor Michael Rama, of Cebu City, in the Philippines,

has been into name-calling during heated meeting

sessions. He told the council members they were “deaf”

and it is a comment that they did not appreciate.

DeafDigest editor says yes. A deaf person

can see hidden things on the street that a

hearing person overlooks.

A deaf person immediately knows that a

person would not know the difference.

HEARING AID DISPENSER OR AUDIOLOGIST?

Hearing aid dispensers sell hearing aids. Some audiologists

also sell hearing aids.

What is the difference? Many people do not know the difference,

and this is interesting.

A hearing aid dispenser in many states only require a high

school education yet give advice and try to sell hearing aids.

An audiologist, in many states, require Masters’ Degree or even

higher.

DeafHistory:

Year 1993 – the US Coast Guard officially welcomed an

all-deaf flotilla. It served the waters between USA and Canada in the Michigan area. This flotilla lasted

three years until it ceased to exist. A flotilla is a group of personal boats and yachts that serve as “eyes” for the Coast Guard.

Curriculum Coordinator for 21st Century Learning

The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf

Reports to:    Director of Academic Technology and 21st Century Learning

Employment information:  This is a full-time, 11-month position.

Summary Statement:  The primary role and responsibilities of the Curriculum Coordinator include collaboration with faculty members and departments in the development, writing, alignment, implementation and assessment of district/common core curriculum (for the improvement of instruction), as well as the evaluation, purchase and incorporation of texts, resources and technology into classroom instruction K-12.

Qualifications:

1.    Master’s degree required, preferably in related areas such as Instructional Design, Curriculum and Instruction, or related fields which include design, instruction, and assessment.

2.    At least five (5) years teaching experience in an educational setting.

3.    Past experience in curriculum instruction and supervision required.

4.    Extensive knowledge of common core standards and curriculum and instructional design, including integration of academic technology, emphasis on math and English Language Arts critical.

5.    An extensive knowledge of and experience with recent and emerging educational practices, academic technology, common core standards and assessment, curricular alignment, etc.

6.    Must be organized, assertive, creative, able to assume initiative and responsibility.

7.    Must be able to work well with people, hearing and Deaf.

8.    Comfort and breadth of experience with interactive and academic technologies

9.    Fluency in ASL.

Duties and responsibilities:

1.    Ensure that the school’s curriculum is aligned with the state standards to achieve school goals. 2.    Map and align current school curriculum and practices to common core – finding gaps, holes, and misalignments.

3.    Create comprehensive plan to move to full alignment of the common core by grade level and program.

4.    Align curriculum objectives to student testing

5.    Work with each grade and individual teachers to better understand and implement common core standards and meet alignment goals.

6.    Participate in the adoption of all textbooks and supplementary instructional materials. 7.    Provide ongoing evaluation of curriculum maps/curriculum guides, with annual updates of objectives and assessments;

8.    Work with academic departments to insure both vertical and horizontal alignment and best practices.

9.    Develop individual teachers abilities to implement and assess curriculum in daily practice and in planning lesson

10.    Monitor and evaluate staff curriculum development

11.    Develop in teachers. ability to check for understanding and track progress according to standards.

12.    Help create and manage curriculum guides aligned to state standards by grades and departments

13.    Be able to demonstrate through uses of such tools as pre- and post- tests of students. successful implementation of curriculum and improved or attained understanding.

14.    Understanding of the Danielson framework for curriculum practioners is preferred 15.    Experience, understanding, and knowledge of a variety of academic technology applications, and creative and extensive experience with integration of academic technology required.

16.    Ability to organize, lead, and train a variety of topics for professional development (in support of curriculum and instructional programs) in these areas required.

Infant/Toddler Home Visitor (Contractor)

Reports To:                 Coordinator of Infant/Toddler Early Intervention

Employment Information: This is a fee for service position. This position does not carry benefits.

Summary Statement:      The home-visitor provides special instruction to infants, toddlers and their families.

Qualifications:

1.    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in early intervention, early childhood education, early childhood special education or deaf education; Master’s degree preferred.

2.    One year (or full-time equivalent) experience working with children who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and their families; early childhood experience preferred.

3.    Possession of or eligibility for appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education teacher certification.

4.    Proficiency in American Sign Language as demonstrated by an Intermediate score of 3.0 or greater on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) or its equivalent.

5.    PA Act 34 Criminal background, Child Abuse and FBI clearances.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

1.    Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of typical child growth and development.

2.    Demonstrate understanding of and experience with a culturally diverse urban population.

Summary Statement:      The Coordinator of Infant/Toddler Early Intervention will provide leadership and coordination to an interdisciplinary team of professionals, families and children.

Program Statement:     First Conversations is a program operating under The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.  Serving infants/toddlers with hearing loss and their families, the First Conversations team provides families with information and resources about language development, early learning and educational options. Qualifications:

1.    Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in early intervention, early childhood education, early childhood special education, deaf education or related field. 2.    Five years (or full-time equivalent) experience working with children who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and their families; early intervention field experience preferred.

3.    Strong leadership and supervisory experience.

4.    Strong understanding of language development and communication options for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, including thorough understanding of developmental milestones in American Sign Language (ASL), listening and spoken language. 5.    Strong understanding of special education laws, specifically IDEA Part C. 6.    Commitment to social justice, empowerment of families and support for diversity, specifically within an urban framework. 7.    Strong organization skills, flexibility and decision making capabilities. 8.    Knowledge of Pennsylvania early intervention system preferred. 9.    Possession of or eligibility for appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education teacher certification and Supervisor certification.

10.    Represent First Conversations at relevant interagency meetings (State Interagency Coordinating Council, IDS Director’s Meetings, Teaching Learning Collaborative Supervisors Meetings, Early Intervention Providers Association). 11.    Oversee fiscal operations including provider enrollment into PROMISe billing system.

12.    Manage referrals (i.e. accept/assign, report start dates, maintain caseloads). 13.    Support family engagement demonstrating an understanding of adult learning principles.

- Driver (Part-time)

Qualifications:  Must have high school diploma or GED, valid driver’s

license with clean driving record with no moving violations, follow

all safety guidelines per MVA and 3-5 years experience.  Fluency in

ASL preferred or willingness to learn.

Job Goal:  To provide transportation services for Deaf and Hard of

Hearing individuals with other disabilities to locations throughout

Qualifications:  Fluency in ASL; High School Diploma, GED or

Job Goal:  Provide direct care independent living services and

support to individuals. Services range from personal hygiene,

medication administration and intensive independent living skills

- Job Coach

Qualifications:  Six month’s experience with training, coaching and

motivating people. Skilled in use of structured training techniques

for teaching job performance skills; job-related skills and work

Job Goal:  To provide individual and group on-the-job training for

individuals with various levels of hearing loss which includes

teaching and coaching how to develop job skills, employee/employer

Description: Deaf Can Inc.’s, Deaf Living Sober program, has an opening for a Case Manager and Tenant Assistants working with Deaf/Hard of Hearing/DeafBlind individuals who are in recovery and living in independent apartments utilizing the skills and experience of the Specialist to adapt and maintain a sober and meaningful life.   The Case Manager will work closely with the Central Avenue Apartment Staff and other RS Eden employees to assure safety and maintain communication between programs.  We provide a safe environment and teach residents the skills necessary to live, work, and socialize in a sober community. The primary mode of communication is American Sign Language (ASL). Therefore, fluency in ASL  and other various manual forms of communication is mandatory.

Duties: The Case Manager support for individual resident. Responsibilities include:

.    Provides individual instruction to resident on self-care, household-chores, and other general resident specific programs.

.    Acts as a role model demonstrating good skills in recovery approaches and understanding addiction philosophy.

.    Daily contact and accountability of residents to their schedules.

.    Assisting, locating, planning and developing appointments and follow up care for health, mental health, vocational rehabilitation, legal, spiritual health, transit and any other directed by the resident.

.    Provide hands on localized training on Twin Cities public transit such as bus and light rail systems and accompanying residents on initial appointments as needed. .    Complete charts, logs, incident reports and all other written documentation as required by program policies and procedures.

All program employees attend regular staff meetings.

Qualifications:

.    Minimum of 21 years of age

.    High school diploma/GED

.    Two years of Adult Foster Care /Human Services / Educational experience

.    Knowledge of addiction LADC, MN model 12 steps, relapse and recovery approaches

.    Additional work or volunteer experience with persons who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and/or Deaf-Blind.

.    FLUENCY IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time, 199-day position.  The Technology Coordinator is responsible for server and client computer maintenance, back-up and security, and maintenance of other technology on the campus.

The Technology Coordinator should possess an understanding of network distributed computing concepts and experience with both PC, MAC and tablet (iPad) platforms and should have a working knowledge of technology that is used in an educational setting such as SMARTboards, document cameras and related educational software. Experience instructing in the use of technology-based services is also recommended.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:    Bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology or related field is preferred. Experience in a school setting also preferred.

The Technology Coordinator should have working knowledge of Windows 2008 Server; Active Directory; VMWare, file sharing, content-filtering firewalls, phone and communication systems, video conferencing technology, technology-based security systems, PC & MAC hardware maintenance; Windows XP . Windows 7, and MAC OS 10.5 . 10.8.

Position Purpose

Responsible for the Community Outreach Program for the Deaf (COPD) – New Mexico’s Interpreting Services Program.  Manages the Interpreting Program with oversight from both the Agency Director and the Operations Director of Interpreting.  Administers the Interpreting Department’s internship program.  Performs daily supervisory responsibilities for Interpreter Referral Specialists and Staff Interpreters.  Assists with administrative and operational policy development and monitoring of monthly expenditures. Completes interpreter status and staff productivity reports, ensuring quality of service, and develops agreements and contracts with customer businesses. Provides interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hearing consumers in a variety of educational and community settings. Documents interpreting time and activities for billing purposes. Essential Functions

.    Provides interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hearing consumers in a variety of educational and community settings including medical, mental health, vocational, social services, etc.

.    Maintains high professional standards in accordance with the RID Code of Professional Conduct, ensuring quality interpreting services for the Hearing and Deaf consumers

.    Documents interpreting time for billing purposes

.    Assists with in-house and walk-in interpreting services, as needed

.    Administers the Interpreting Department’s internship program; works with supervisor in the development of the internship program for state-wide and national best practices

.    Assists the Agency Director by Collaborating with legal, medical and mental health partners state-wide to maximize services and training opportunities

.    Develops interpreting related workshops for consumers and interpreters as assigned by the Agency Director

.    Assists Interpreting Department with projects such as developing training, internship and mentoring for staff and contract interpreters

.    Assists with contracts for freelance interpreters; maintains a file on each freelance interpreter; follows-up on interpreter/consumer concerns

.    Evaluates productivity levels of staff interpreters and monthly fill rates for the department and makes recommendations for improvement; develops procedures to accomplish stated recommendations

.    Consults with agencies regarding professional and ethical conduct of contract interpreters

.    Evaluates interpreter services and develops recommendations of changes based on community needs and service operation; shares information with Agency Director and Director of Operations .    Completes monthly interpreter status reports and staff productivity reports, and analyzes departmental functions; reports findings to the Advisory Board

.    Assists in coordinating/scheduling community and educational interpreters

.    Acts as a liaison with local and national interpreting resources such as NAD and RID to foster improvement in interpreting services

.    Works as part of a team to develop VI programs for the Deaf community .    Works with businesses and organizations in the development of VI services

.    Represents the Interpreting Program at agency and community meetings, as assigned by supervisor

.    May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business
