- THE OLD FOGEYS made its online premiere on DEAF DIGEST on June 16, 2002. They first appeared in print as a comic book in early 2002 which caught the attention of DEAF DIGEST editor Barry Strassler who suggested wider distribution through DEAF DIGEST.

THE OLD FOGEYS celebrates its 10th anniversary on June 17, 2012. Creator David H. Pierce thanks his fans and supporters of the strip. Without them, there would be no strip.

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

A blind man helping the deaf with voice relay calls?

Yes. Emory Finefrock, of Oklahoma,  a World War II veteran, who is now blind, is now qualified to make relay calls for deaf veterans. Some of these deaf veterans can hear but cannot speak or cannot hear but can speak or even in some cases cannot hear and cannot speak. These training sessions were given by the Veterans Workshop, a national organization that

helps out American veterans.

The New Zealand Human Rights Commission combined

six cases of individuals that claimed deafness and

have been refused hearing aids by the Accident

Compensation Corporation. These cases were filed

by The National Foundation for the Deaf on behalf

of these late deafened individuals. The mediation

sessions failed to resolve this issue. Next step is a hearing with the Human Rights Review Tribunal.

- Very Hot News

The Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois, was

the scene of picketing by deaf protesters. The issue

was video remote interpreting (VRI) services (not video

relay interpreting services, two completely different

things). The protesters are saying nothing has been

right with the VRI provided by the hospital.

- Thursday May 24th

Debate was waged within the Scottish Government on how

to best create public awareness on the needs of the

deaf. Promoting the debate was the Public Health Ministry

- Friday May 25th

A practice disaster drill was performed by Florida’s

Department of Children and Families at Tallahassee.

The goal was to have food distributed to families

impacted by disasters. A group played deaf roles

so that the state employees would be familiar with

the needs of the deaf in disasters.

- Saturday May 26th

The art work by Caleb Wimble, a student at the

Austine School for the Deaf (Vermont) was personally

recognized by U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt. He was

hosting the 31st Annual Congressional Art Competition

for Vermont high school students.

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Google at it again with a bright idea, possibly,

for the deaf. Google is working on Project Glass.

Inside it could feature flashing alerts. It would

tell the deaf person that danger is near – such as a

fire truck coming by. Another possibility is speech

recognition, allowing the deaf to communicate with

the hearing person. Google has applied for a patent

with this special eyeglasses.

SIGN LANGUAGE TRANSLATION SERVICE IN NEW ZEALAND

In New Zealand, there are deaf people that have

problems understanding a newspaper story or a contract or

a letter or emails, etc.

What do they do? Sometimes they get help from deaf friends,

or they use services of Seeflow.

Seeflow? It is a sign language translation service through

the video internet. People at Seeflow will use sign language

to explain to the deaf customer what the printed words mean.

FAILING THE BAR EXAM 7 TIMES

Many attorneys fail the bar exam once or twice

before finally passing. Many other applicants fail

several times and give up and never become

attorneys.

A deaf attorney failed the bar exam seven times

before he finally passed on his 8th try.

That attorney is Tamon Hiroshi, who has his own

deaf clientele practice in the Okinawa Prefecture

in Japan.

He gave this talk “My steps to becoming a lawyer”

at a workshop recently. He said he spends a little

time in the courts; much of his time is at his

office working with deaf clients on their financial

problems (taxes, debts, payment plans, etc).

CONFESSION OF A LATE DEAFENED NURSE

In a newspaper story, a late deafened nurse said

that she did not realize for years that she had a

hearing loss.

It was only when doctors communicated with each

other behind surgical masks that the nurse realized

that she subconsciously relied on lipreading all

the time along. She was completely lost in the operating room!

She has since then used hearing aids and then

CI’s.

Wireless telecommunication.

Recently I gave up using my Blackberry as it was too difficult to

read the screen.

There are some good choices available for people with low vision like

myself.

Examples of these are iPhone and Android products.

I already own an iPad which is WiFi only.

I found a Mobile WiFi (MiFi)

It is a wireless mobile WiFi and small enough to put it in your

pocket.

I now am able to use my iPad on the road with MiFi for email,

messages and video!

The monthly charge is the same as most of us pay for  our iPhone

service!

I have also add a Bluetooth keyboard for easy typing.

Hey I can allow up to 10 devices on my MiFi

I can picture all my friends joining me via MiFi and chatting just

about anywhere!

I feel like I have a giant Blackberry!

- RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR: (Full time position) The qualified

candidate shall possess: HS Diploma and 5 years of Mental Health

direct care experience, fluency in ASL, knowledge of Deaf Culture.

Excellent writing and communication skills required.

Responsibilities: Day to day management and supervision of

residential setting for deaf adults with mental illness and

behavioral health concerns.  Supervision of direct care staff,

development of residential programming and staff schedules, planning

and leading staff meetings, coordinate staff trainings, manage petty

cash and consumer funds, coordinate consumer services with

internal/outside agency providers and families, conduct consumer and

staff interviews, complete monthly reports, service plans and staff

evaluations, follow up with physical and psychiatric medical

concerns.

- INTENSIVE CASE MANAGERS: (Full time position) This position provides

resources and support to clients and their families who reside in the

community.  Duties: Responsibilities include assessing services needs

of consumers, primarily children, to insure continuum of care;

develop service plans; independent living skills instructions,

advocate for access to public & private services and programs such as

medical, vocational and other services. Qualifications: BA/BS degree

in a Human Services field preferred; or High school diploma & 12

credit hours in human/social science with 2 years mental health

direct care experience. Must have strong organizational skills;

fluency in ASL, familiarity with other visual communication modes and

language levels. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends

as needed and travel various areas in the community. Knowledge of

laws governing the rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals

including IDEA and ADA a plus; and must have a valid driver’s

license.

- THERAPIST/PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION COUNSELOR:  (Full time

position) This position provides therapeutic and psycho-educational

workshops and group sessions for consumers who are deaf.  The

qualified candidate shall possess:  BA in psychology, counseling or

any other human services field; must have 2 years’ experience with

individuals with mental illness and/or mental retardation including

treatment planning and progress notes; advanced fluency in ASL

required; must be innovative, creative and be able to work in a team

environment.  Duties:  Develop, coordinate and provide

group/individual therapy for wellness maintenance and

psycho-educational workshops.

- RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position

provides direct client services including encouraging client

independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community

integration.  Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf

consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities

living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social

relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.

Qualifications:  HS + 1 year related experience; valid drivers’

license; advanced fluency in ASL; demonstrated competency in

independent living skills; ability to teach, advise and motivate Deaf

Consumers; strong interpersonal skills.

Client Support Specialist

DCARA

position located in San Jose, CA

DCARA has a full-time non-exempt job opening for the position of Client Supports Specialist at the DCARA  San Jose office.  This position provides a wide range of peer counseling, community education, workshops and advocacy on behalf of the diverse Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in the Santa Clara County area.  The position reports to the Director of Client Support Services.

REPONSIBILITIES:

-    Provide the following services:  peer counseling, advocacy, communication assistance, independent living skills, information & referral and community education.

-    Ensure completion of intake paperwork, Individual Services Plans, statistical information and monthly reports. -    Work with the Director of Client Support Services to develop linkages and working relationships with governmental and community-based organization/agencies in the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County that provide services to the Deaf community, as well as other agencies primarily serving deaf community.

-    Represents DCARA and/or the deaf community at meetings and community events.

-     Provide Deaf culture sensitivity trainings or  other related presentations at locations outside  the office or conduct home visits as needed; must be able to arrange for own transportation.

-    Coordinate special projects as delegated by the Director of Client Support Services.

Required Skills

-    BA degree in Social Services, Deaf Studies or related fields; OR 3 years of documented experience working in service provision to the Deaf Community or work in a human services setting.

-    Fluent in American Sign Language & fully knowledgeable of Deaf Culture

-    Knowledge of relevant issues associated with the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened community.

-    Experience with PC including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

-    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

-    Ability to work independently, as well as a team player.

-    Ability to work with people from a variety of racial, economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Located in Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD), the third oldest school of its kind in the United States, is a premier provider of specialized educational services for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in preparation for further education or successful employment.  Its comprehensive programs range from early intervention programs for infants, toddlers and their families to the high school program with a largely academic focus, with the goal of post-secondary and/or vocational preparation.  PSD has 200 students, over 200 faculty/staff, and an operating budget of $14 million.

Technical Support Representative

Brief summary of duties:

This position works with customers on an outbound and inbound basis, helping them resolve any issues they may have related to using Purple products. This position works under minimal supervision.

Areas of Responsibility: Provides top level technical support for all inbound callers. Responsible for gathering data on both satisfied and dissatisfied customers and will work with other Purple teams to bring any customer issues to resolution. Uses technical skills and consultative style to demonstrate to potential customers how and why product/services suit the end user’s needs better than competitor’s products.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

- Knowledge of PC and MAC operating systems and iOS and Android

- Video conferencing technical knowledge (i.e. h.323, SIP, h.263, h.264)

- Proficient with all videophones and mobile VRS application on the market

- Resolve complex network, router and firewall support

- 2 years of technical troubleshooting experience with emphasis on customer satisfaction

- Requires the ability to stay on track and meet daily production goals.

- Requires an energetic and outgoing person

- Must be friendly, empathetic, a good team player, quick thinker and be able to multi-task effectively

- Ability to communicate and interact with various customers via VideoPhone

- Good English skills and ASL fluency are required.

Physical Requirements Employees may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time:

Its simultaneous communication model – combining English-based sign language with spoken language – underscores the school’s prioritization of individual student needs above any particular approach or philosophy. In addition to its campus-based programs, WRSD offers an array of audiological and educational services to students in 20 communities in Central and Western Massachusetts. The President reports to the Board of Trustees and oversees a school that enrolls 63 students and reaches about 200 more through its outreach division. OSD teachers individualize for students having diverse needs as well as preparing students for college.
