Top stories about the deaf:

Politicians love to bash the Export-Import Bank,

a small agency that functions as an international

bank, saying it serves no purpose. Well, for the

Lighthouse for the Blind and Deaf in Seattle,

this agency carries a big value – employment

for the deaf! In a machine shop, the deaf employees

manufacture parts for the Federal Defense Logistics

Agency, the Boeing Company and BAE Systems.

The Deaf Development Programme, an agency in

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was praised for helping

improve the lives of the deaf.

A bitter disagreement is taking place between

the superintendent of Arkansas School for

the Deaf and the state personnel manager

on a proposed reorganization plan.

A deaf person sued Patriot Bank of Stamford,

CT for discriminating against the deaf.

A settlement was reached, making everyone happy.

The Deaf People Association Malta, equivalent to

our National Association of the Deaf, have

complained that they have been bypassed everytime

legislators discuss issues of concern to them.

OUR DISAPPEARING DEAF ATTORNEYS

We have about 150-175 deaf and hard of hearing

attorneys in USA. Many of them work for government

agencies. A few are in private practice.

DeafDigest editor knows of many deaf attorneys

that “disappear.” They get jobs as attorneys, but

after a few years, they hate the job and then

disappear.

A CREDIT CARD THAT CLICKS

You go to a store, and buy something. You pay for it at the

counter with your credit card.

You are supposed to touch your credit card with the card scanner.

The hearing person hears the scanner click, and you know the purchase is

finished.

You cannot hear the click. The clerk gives you a dirty look, not

realizing you are deaf!
