“Waiting for a Sign” at Harris Communications

Celebrating the beauty and power of Deaf culture,

“Waiting for a Sign” is the story of siblings Shelly

and Ian and their relationship as Ian leaves home to

attend the Hawthorne School for the Deaf.

Although the siblings had been close, Shelly feels

abandoned when Ian leaves and the two drift apart.

Through unexpected circumstances, there is hope for

reconciliation.

To fully heal her relationship with Ian, however,

Shelly needs to acknowledge and understand why

Hawthorne- and access to the Deaf community- is

so important to him.

Written by clinical social worker Esty Schachter,

“Waiting for a Sign” offers readers 11 and up the

opportunity for insight and understanding.

“Waiting for a Sign” (B1305) is available on the Harris

Communications website for only $9.95.

Top stories about the deaf:

There was a story in the eCampus News that

discussed discrimination against the deaf

with on-line learning material that are

not captioned.

Georgia and South Carolina do not agree with each

other with respect to charging fees for wireless

providers, with part of the funds being earmarked

for deaf accessibility services. South Carolina

wants to charge the wireless carriers while

Georgia doesn’t.

A group of students entered a Burlington County

College (NJ) business plan contest and finished

in second place. Their entry? A video relay

center for the deaf.

The deaf of New Zealand have very much welcomed

Neflix – for one important reason. Netflix

provides captions whereas the TV stations in

their nation do not!

The Ontario Mission of the Deaf continues to

fight its neighbors for the right to use

non-motorized off-road vehicles on its

camp property. Opponents have cited

noise concerns.

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. When a deaf person files a job discrimination

law suit, is there a truth to it?

A. Yes and no. In some cases, the deaf person is

fired for not doing his job the right way or for

not getting along with hearing employees, and so

the lawsuit is a way to save face!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

A DeafBlind friend, Rona von Mering, writes about jewelry

(the reason I leave all my bangles and bobbles at home):

It is time to think about Spring and its many celebrations.

Jewelry would truly be a very nice gift for your dear DeafBlind

spouse or friend.

My dear husband and family members have given me lovely bracelets

which I am very fond of and wear daily.

Often I wear several bracelets at the same time.

There may be some surprises awaiting the wearer of such jewelry.

Bracelets can be ‘troublemakers’!

While utilizing tactile communication with a DeafBlind friend,

my bracelets “accidentally” got caught her wedding band and I

pulled her hand toward my face much to BOTH of our surprise!

Another incident occurred while using tactile communication

with a hearing Mobility instructor, and we were ‘surprised’ to

find our bracelets locked together.

We both laughed and admitted that it seemed that we were latched

onto each other.

Lastly, my bracelets ‘accidentally’ hooked onto my dear husband’s

shirt button cuff while he was attempting to demonstrate the

‘sliding’ sign on my arm.

Jewelry can be a beautiful, decorative fixture on the wearer.

However, one must be keenly aware & careful with jewelry while

using tactile communication with the DeafBlind!

Happy Spring to you all from my heart!

Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the

Deaf-Blind.
