An Intimate Journey through the Science of Sound and Language
When science journalist and mother Lydia Denworth’s son was
identified with significant hearing loss, she set out to learn how
the deprivation of sound affected the developing brain. She
interviewed experts on language development, inventors of
groundbreaking technology, Deaf leaders, and neuroscientists at the
frontiers of brain plasticity research.
“I Can Hear You Whisper” (B1294) chronicles Denworth’s search for
answers-and her new understanding of Deaf culture and the exquisite
relationship between sound, language, and learning.
This book is available at Harris Communications for only $16.00.

Top stories about the deaf:
A lawsuit has been filed against five Chicago area
landlords for discriminating against the deaf.
Deaf leaders have picketed a Los Angeles moviehouse
to protest director Michael Ojeda’s choice of
a hearing actress instead of a deaf actress in the
Avenged movie, which was about a leading deaf
character.
The Montana School for the Deaf and Blind was
mentioned in a newspaper story as a state agency
that has been covered the longest, since 1917,
with the state Montana State Fund (workers’
compensation for injuries and lawsuits).
According to a newspaper letter to the editor,
Texas governor Rick Perry was accused of
making the remodeling of the governor’s
mansion a higher priority over taking
care of the needs of the deaf patients.

I am scheduled to attend a one week seminar at an organization
for the blind.
It will be taught by DeafBlind guys from a DeafBlind organization.
The interesting part is that they said that I am responsible to

For the whole week volunteering, and transportation and evening
meals are on our own.
I investigated the location and the irony is that, for all of us
non-drivers, restaurants are not even close by!
I hope my SSP is strong enough to give me piggy back rides!
