This just in -

Two contradictory stories about the deaf of Hawaii.

The first story said the governor has signed a bill

to spend $400,000 to establish a deaf and blind

service center. Yet there was another story of

the deaf protesting the state budget cuts for

living assistance and interpreter referral

stories. Does Hawaii have problems getting its

act together?

Top stories about the deaf:

Will University of Bristol shut down its famous Centre for Deaf Studies program? The university faculty meeting is

scheduled for July 5th and this issue is on the agenda.

Already the Center workers have been given their pink slip

in advance!

Melton is one of these counties in United Kingdom. It has a

county council. And eight of these council members went

through a 10 week British Sign Language training course.

Do we find this happening in USA? Probably not!

A newspaper said that the deaf Hawaiians succeeded in establishing

a center for the deaf after 50 years of dreaming. DeafDigest

is puzzled about that claim because there was a Hawaii Services On Deafness which existed between 1974 before closing in 2007.

A facebook application for the deaf-blind in Sweden has been planned by Atea, a high tech company

The Isle of Man, an island between Great Britain and Ireland,

and with population of 85,000 people, hosted a presentation by a deaf Irish advocate Gareth Foulkes. Goal was to create

awareness of deafness among the island residents.

OUR DEAF ACTORS JEALOUS OF EACH OTHER?

We read stories of hearing actors hating each other. An

example is Charlie Sheen demanding that Selma Blair be

fired from the “Anger Management” TV program.

What about our deaf actors? DeafDigest editor asked a

deaf person with background in Deaf Drama plays and movies.

He said that deaf actors fight with each other the same

as hearing actors fight with each other.

Hearing people. Deaf people. Same thing – we are all

human beings!

TWO SEPARATE GROUPS IN SAME PARTY

What happens when two separate groups are invited

to the same party?

Both groups will ignore each other and chat only

with members of its own group.

An example is a VIP Democratic person marrying

a VIP Republican person. These Democrats and Republicans

will not mingle with each other.

This is for hearing only, not for deaf? Wrong! DeafDigest

editor has been to weddings and big events where Gallaudet

people and NTID people were invited.

The Gallaudet people stayed with each other and the NTID

people did the same thing.

Democrats-Republicans. Gallaudet-NTID. No difference!

RESPONSES BY DEAF RESIDENTS OF JAPAN’S SOUTHERN ISLAND

The Japanese Southern island is vulnerable to emergencies

DEAFLYMPIC TORCH RELAY TEAMS

Relay teams carrying the lighted torch are a tradition

with the Olympics. The upcoming Deaflympics at Sofia,

Bulgaria, will have a twist – a bicycle flame relay.

Purpose of the relay is two fold – to make the public

aware that we, the deaf, can play sports, and to

urge for safe biking lanes for deaf bicyclists.

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. How often would a deaf stamp be issued by a government?

A. There is no set frequency of these deaf stamps. Each country

has its own stamp issuing policy. As an example, the Deaf of

Canada has submitted a stamp proposal. But will it go through

remains to be seen.
