Top stories about the deaf:

Stuff happens at Kentucky School for the Deaf? Some months

back there was a sink hole, which was quickly fixed. And

now this – strong smell in one of the campus buildings

forced evacuation. This strong smell happened to be a

burnt-out universal power supply equipment. All is fine now.

be no costs to replace the failed component.

Many small towns resist captioning their council meetings,

just for one reason – costs. Not Rockville, Maryland; the

council agreed to have government meetings captioned.

The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications,

which is akin to our FCC, has ordered more captioning of

more TV programs, including commercials.

The Ghana National Association of the Deaf has publicly

denounced the way the public treats (badly) the

deaf women that live in the rural areas of the nation.

Flashback 25 years ago, a deaf woman from Pennsylvania

was excluded from jury duty because of her deafness.

She filed a lawsuit and won. Fast forward, Christopher

Bennett, who is deaf, was written up in a Pennsylvania

newspaper about successfully serving on a jury. His

deafness was not an issue – whereas it was a hot story

A LUCKY SMALL TOWN

A small town of 76,000 people in Indiana is lucky.

This town is rebuilding a new downtown with new buildings,

new shops, new stores, etc. The town officers and developers

know nothing about ADA. Hiring a ADA consultant would be

expensive.

A man that lives in the small town volunteered to serve

on the ADA Task Force as a consultant for free. He explained

everything about ADA with these officers and developers,

making sure these buildings and shops were deaf friendly with

interpreters, signalers, captions, etc.

This town is lucky. Other towns are not so lucky.

AN EMBARRASSING CONVERSATION WITH A CODA

A long time ago, DeafDigest editor introduced a

Coda friend to his mother.

The mother was amazed as the “perfect” oral speech

of that Coda.

She did not realize that he was a Coda that used

ASL fluently. She thought he was deaf.

It was a very embarrassing moment for the DeafDigest

editor, the Coda and the mother.

Rene Pellerin’s corner:

Rona and her husband visited me last week.  They learned some new techniques

that benefit us as DeafBlind.

Below is her comment:

“Pro-Tactile Signs in ‘cue’s”

Last week while visiting with Rene in VT, we learned Pro-Tactile signing in

‘cue(s)’, an enhanced type of  communications mode via touch in signs (ASL)

primarily useful for deaf-blind.

Am very sure that many of you already know / or have heard about this type

of Pro-Tactile signing in cue’s / communications, but this is definitely new

to us.

Shortly afterwards, during our travels, my husband wanted to practice this

new Pro-Tactile signing cue’s on my back.

He used the Pro-Tactile sign ‘cue’ word for ‘laughing’ on my back. I

promptly thought he meant to give me a back scratch.

Confused, huh?

Giving a back scratch is wonderful!

It surely gives one a big stress relief for anyone, smile!

Another instance that happened to me with that same Pro-Tactile sign ‘cue’

word for ‘laughing’ on my back. For a quick moment, it seemed like my

husband was trying to say he was grouchy, but only laughing! Smile.

Grins!

Rona

Rene’s show business is now entering its 3rd year and it

focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
