Top stories about the deaf:

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil

Rights and Urban Affairs reached agreement

with the prison systems in Maryland and

Kentucky to give deaf prisoners their

rights, meaning communications and

interpreters.

The Pennsylvania Society for the Advancement

of the Deaf has posted a public list of concerns

regarding issues at the Pennsylvania School for

the Deaf. The biggest issue is lack of

funding.

Mike Phillips is retiring this summer as the

superintendent of Arkansas School for the Deaf.

A search for his replacement is underway.

While it was announced few weeks ago that

Illinois School for the Deaf superintendent

Janice Smith-Warshaw will be leaving,

the state has not decided to hire an

interim superintendent or to leave it

vacant until a permanent superintendent

is hired.

The British Columbia education minister has

expressed his disagreement with Ottawa’s

decision to keep a deaf girl out of the

country because her deafness is a “medical”

condition the nation does not want. The

deaf girl, in fact, has already been

accepted to the deaf school in British

Columbia.

DEAF LEADER SORRY FOR LEAVING GALLAUDET

A young deaf man enrolled at Gallaudet. He did not know

ASL, and after one semester he transferred to Gallaudet,

telling friends hearing college is better for him.

Years later he became a leader in the deaf community

even though he did not learn much ASL. He attended deaf

conventions and deaf events and everyone ignored him.

He realized that leaving Gallaudet was his big mistake!

ALWAYS SCARED AT YOUR JOB

A deaf person is always scared at his job. Scared at his

boss? No. Scared with his job tasks? No. Scared of being

fired? No.

What is he scared of? A new employee! Is the new employee

deaf-friendly or deaf-unfriendly? These new employees never

saw a deaf person in their lives. So, how will they react

to a deaf employee on the first day of their job?

This is what the deaf person is scared of!
