“The Legend of the Mountain Men” ASL Movie

During the summer, it is great to have a movie to watch when the kids are bored or the weather turns rainy.

“The Legend of the Mountain Man” is a family movie about a father who sends his children to his parent’s ranch for the summer.  The children unexpectedly encounter a creature, one that has never been seen nor recorded in history books.

A heartwarming journey that is signed in ASL (with no audio) and closed captioned.

Rated PG.

Find “The Legend of the Mountain Men” (DVD421) at Harris Communications for only $24.99.

Top stories about the deaf:

The Midtown Neurology, of Atlanta, reached agreement

with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on providing interpreters

for future deaf patients. This medical group also had

to pay damages for refusing the same deaf patient 3 times!

Jeffrey Liebman, a deaf Quebec man, filed a complaint

with the provincial Human Rights Commission regarding

Cineplex-Odeon movie chain on not captioning the movie

in French. The movie chain said the captions were not

available in French!

The Office of Communications, the British version of our

own FCC, said that they were never consulted on the need

to caption important TV news programs. This was the accusation

posted by an activist.

Last week DeafDigest mentioned a federal judge ordering

Georgia to make public services accessible to the deaf.

Georgia already has Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired

(GACHI), so what is the connection, if any? GACHI, funded

by the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency, focuses

on finding employment for deaf clients. It is different

from public services that the judge mandated on behalf

of the deaf.

Deaf people of Warsaw, Poland massed together for a rally,

requesting equal rights.

HYPOCRISY IN DEAF ELECTIONS

Many years ago DeafDigest editor lost an election

in a deaf organization.

The vote was 55 to 20. After the election, about

30-40 people came to DeafDigest editor and said

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Are there any former Gallaudet athletes currently playing

professional sports?

A. Yes. Two of them – Tony Tatum, Utah Blaze in Arena Football League

and Rick Macomber, standardbred horse races driver in Indiana.

Almost all colleges on Gallaudet’s level (NCAA-III) don’t even have a

single professional athlete, but Gallaudet has two!
