Be Prepared for Dangerous Weather

Storm season is upon us. Do you have a way to be notified when dangerous

weather is nearby?

One way is to use the Midland Weather Radio with Light and Bed Shaker

(SC-WAKIT1). Designed specifically for deaf and hard of hearing people,

this kit includes a weather alert radio that receives signals from NOAA

when severe weather is going to strike your area. A Silent Call strobe

light and bed shaker is connected to the radio. When severe weather is

nearby, you will be alerted by light, vibration and a loud audible alarm

on the radio, giving you time to get to a safe place. The LCD screen on

the radio will also read out the specific warning such as “TORNADO”.

Check out all the weather alert products available on the Harris

Communications website and be prepared when severe weather strikes.

Top stories about the deaf:

Google for Entrepreneurs, in Vancouver, WA, is trying

to help the deaf start up their own businesses. A workshop

took place to teach them the ways of operating a business.

In Mbabane, a city in Swaziland, there is a deaf-friendly

intersection corner. It has a read out display at the kiosk

that tells the deaf the up-to-date traffic reports.

Controversy is brewing at Montana School for the Deaf and

the Blind on the search of a new superintendent. The

veteran teachers are claiming they are left out of the

loop, with no chance for input, while the administration

looks for superintendent candidates.

Windsor is a Canadian city across the border bridge

from Detroit. Deaf residents of Windsor are complaining

about the shortage of interpreters.

The Empire State Association of the Deaf, the state-wide

association, affiliated with the National Association

of the deaf, is asking that legislators make it a

law to provide interpreters everywhere.

WHICH MSD?

You make a new deaf friend at a deaf club.

He tells you he graduated from MSD.

MSD? Which MSD? Maryland SD or Michigan SD

Years ago there was another MSD – Minnesota

its name to Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf!

Same thing with ISD – Illinois SD, Indiana SD

and Iowa SD.

A DEAF CHILD STREET SIGN

There are many Deaf Child signs on streets everywhere in

USA.

And it is an old story that the deaf child grows up,

becomes an adult and moves away from the old house.

Yet – that sign still continues. Why wasn’t the sign

taken down?

A Department of Transportation person in one big city

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. There are more and more Deaf Cafes overseas.

Why is it that way?

A. These cafes were set up by deaf social service

agencies. There is an adage that if you can’t find

for yourself – hence these deaf cafes. Remember

everyone loves coffee, at least almost everyone!

Many people who are DeafBlind will attend the International Deaf-Blind Expo!

This will be a challenge for us to try the slot machines!  Or play cards?

The event organizer said to “bring your own SSP”.

I prefer to use haptics, which provide information via touch.

For example, if I were at a slot machine, the SSP could use my back to tell me the results.

IF it is 7-7-7 for example, they would simply “print” 7 7 7 on my back.

There are many possible ways to help DeafBlind people to enjoy Las Vegas!
