The Hearing Loss Association of America will be seeking
a new Executive Director as Brenda Battat has announced her
retirement, effective on August 31, 2013. This organization
now has a year to find her replacement.
We have discovered another deaf athlete in the Olympics -
USA volleyball player David Smith. He was added to the
Olympics roster at the very last minute.
3D closed captioning standards were just released by consumer electronics association
Both Obama and Romney are fighting tooth and nail for our
votes in the upcoming presidential election. Have we
ever had a deaf person endorsing a presidential candidate
in a TV commercial? There is one – in Abram Powell,
Pontiac, Michigan, a retired auto plant worker, who is deaf.
He is endorsing Obama. Powell, by the way, is a past Deaflympics participant.
Sam Lovett, not deaf, is running for state representative
in Rhode Island. One of his campaign promises was this:

The TD Canada Trust would not allow a deaf person to open
a Registered Disability Savings Plan. It led to a formal
complaint filed by the mother of a deaf son. The mother

A SLIGHTLY DEAF STUDENT AT US NAVAL ACADEMY
The US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD, is a tough place
to attend classes and to take part in the naval drills. The ensigns become US Naval officers after graduation.
There is no way for a deaf student to enroll at the
academy. But few years ago the rules were “bent” – a
basketball star was slightly deaf and the Naval Academy
allowed him to enroll – because the academy needs good
athletes in all sports!

A BIG DEAF AGENCY MISSES THE GRANT DEADLINE
This is a true story during the late seventies. A big
deaf agency hired a grant writer. He wrote a great grant,
but it took so much time. And when he was done writing
the grant, the agency driver had to fight through the
heavy traffic jam to try to make it to the government
agency before deadline time.
He arrived late. The government agency would not
accept the grant.

MEDICAL ACCESSIBILITY AND THE ADA
Just about every year the ADA regs get stronger and stronger.
The latest tightening of the ADA regs is the medical issues.
It was announced that the federal prosecutors will be enforcing
the rules regarding medical access for the deaf and the disabled.
This is part of the Barrier-Free Health Care Initiative.
SIGN LANGUAGE OR NON-VERBAL GESTURES
If a deaf person lives with an all-hearing family where no one
knows sign language, which is better – having these family
members learn sign language or to rely on non-verbal gestures?
These gestures are very effective if carefully used as
appropriate. Some hearing people know how to use it whereas
most hearing people don’t.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. is seeking
a talented and versatile professional for the position of Associate
Director. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong,
clear commitment to expanding and diversifying TDI’s revenue streams
for its daily operations. Responsibilities include strategic plan
implementation, operations planning and evaluation, project
management, financial planning and monitoring, grant writing and
fund-raising.
QUALIFICATIONS
* A Masters’ Degree of Arts/Science is preferred. However, the
candidate must possess at least a Bachelors of Arts/Science
Degree in Business, Education, Human Resources, Management,
Public Administration, Human Services or other related field.
* Minimum of three years of job related work experience with
demonstrated competence in the following areas: working with
individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, familiarity with
the philanthropic process, budget development, program planning,
grant writing, and non-profit or government management
responsibility.
COMPENSATION
TDI offers a competitive salary and customary benefits. The salary
range for this position is $50,000-$60,000, depending on education

The therapist will be able to work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotion disorders and promote optimal mental health with Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and children. The therapist must have knowledge of therapeutic best practices for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and be able to apply cultural and linguistic bridging to promote optimal mental health.
They should be fluent in and culturally competent in American Sign Language and therefore has the ability to communicate directly with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals who sign. They also need to be able to communicate directly with hard of hearing clients who do not use sign language.
Therapists are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address wide range of issues including depression, addiction, and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress management, problems with self esteem issues associated with aging, job or career concerns, educational decisions, adjustment issues, parenting, grief marital or relationship problems, as well as others.
Therapists need to be able to be flexible to work on a team and with in various structures in the community mental health system. BJC Behavioral Health utilizes electronic medical records. The therapist must have knowledge of Microsoft software including MS Word and have enough computer knowledge to be able to learn a new computer program.

Position:
Ultimately administers and provides oversight to the day-to-day management of the program operations.
Duties:
- Oversees intake, assessment, admission and discharge of Consumers;
- Monitors and oversees evaluation of programs;
- Ensures coordination of interagency programming and services to clients;
- Ensures that programs collect appropriate program and client data and meet reporting requirements;

- Coordinates services between consumers who do not receive CSA/sub-provider services from Deaf-REACH and their CSA;
- Serves as a member on the Quality Improvement Committee;

- Locates and assists with writing grant proposals;
- Markets to recruit clients;
- Attends staff meetings;
- Supervises Program Specialists regularly;
- Coordinates student interns to be interviewed and placed in various programs.
Qualifications:
Prefer Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, psychology, nursing or equivalent field with three years experience with deaf persons who have additional disabilities, especially with mental illness and mental retardation, and two years experience in administration; strong background in clinical consultation and behavior management; prefer fluency in sign language and knowledge of psycho-social-cultural aspects of deafness.

Responsibilities: Day to day management and supervision of
residential setting for deaf adults with mental illness and
behavioral health concerns. Supervision of direct care staff,
development of residential programming and staff schedules, planning
and leading staff meetings, coordinate staff trainings, manage petty
cash and consumer funds, coordinate consumer services with
internal/outside agency providers and families, conduct consumer and
staff interviews, complete monthly reports, service plans and staff
evaluations, follow up with physical and psychiatric medical
concerns.
- INTENSIVE CASE MANAGERS: (Full time position) This position provides
resources and support to clients and their families who reside in the
community. Duties: Responsibilities include assessing services needs
of consumers, primarily children, to insure continuum of care;
develop service plans; independent living skills instructions,
advocate for access to public & private services and programs such as
medical, vocational and other services. Qualifications: BA/BS degree
in a Human Services field preferred; or High school diploma & 12
credit hours in human/social science with 2 years mental health
direct care experience. Must have strong organizational skills;
fluency in ASL, familiarity with other visual communication modes and
language levels. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends
as needed and travel various areas in the community. Knowledge of
laws governing the rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals
including IDEA and ADA a plus; and must have a valid driver’s
license.
- THERAPIST/PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION COUNSELOR: (Full time
position) This position provides therapeutic and psycho-educational
workshops and group sessions for consumers who are deaf. The
qualified candidate shall possess: BA in psychology, counseling or
any other human services field; must have 2 years’ experience with
individuals with mental illness and/or mental retardation including
treatment planning and progress notes; advanced fluency in ASL
required; must be innovative, creative and be able to work in a team
environment. Duties: Develop, coordinate and provide
group/individual therapy for wellness maintenance and
psycho-educational workshops.
- RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position
provides direct client services including encouraging client
independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community
integration. Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf
consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities
living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social
relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.
Qualifications: HS + 1 year related experience; valid drivers’
license; advanced fluency in ASL; demonstrated competency in
independent living skills; ability to teach, advise and motivate Deaf
Consumers; strong interpersonal skills.

Client Support Specialist
DCARA
position located in San Jose, CA
DCARA has a full-time non-exempt job opening for the position of Client Supports Specialist at the DCARA San Jose office. This position provides a wide range of peer counseling, community education, workshops and advocacy on behalf of the diverse Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in the Santa Clara County area. The position reports to the Director of Client Support Services.
REPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide the following services: peer counseling, advocacy, communication assistance, independent living skills, information & referral and community education.
- Ensure completion of intake paperwork, Individual Services Plans, statistical information and monthly reports. - Work with the Director of Client Support Services to develop linkages and working relationships with governmental and community-based organization/agencies in the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County that provide services to the Deaf community, as well as other agencies primarily serving deaf community.
- Represents DCARA and/or the deaf community at meetings and community events.
- Provide Deaf culture sensitivity trainings or other related presentations at locations outside the office or conduct home visits as needed; must be able to arrange for own transportation.
- Coordinate special projects as delegated by the Director of Client Support Services.
Required Skills
- BA degree in Social Services, Deaf Studies or related fields; OR 3 years of documented experience working in service provision to the Deaf Community or work in a human services setting.
- Fluent in American Sign Language & fully knowledgeable of Deaf Culture
- Knowledge of relevant issues associated with the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened community.
- Experience with PC including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, as well as a team player.
- Ability to work with people from a variety of racial, economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
