learn to become contributing members of the society
by their work in the agricultural field. Kaity Hagen,

be wise to wait a bit longer! There was a discussion on
a deaf discussion blog that it is a no-win situation!
If the cable is connected to the TV set, then picture
is bad. If the cable is connected to the cable top box,
then picture is great but it kills captions!
- Thursday July 19th
The National Theatre of the Deaf has removed the interim tag
from Betty Beekman, promoting her to permanent executive
director. Additionally, the theatrical group is moving
back to its roots – at the O’Neill Theater Center
in New London, CT.
- Friday July 20th
Deaf people in Arizona will now be able to watch captioned
movies at the Cinemark moviehouses, thanks to settlement
of a lawsuit.
- Saturday July 21st
Aaron Marquis, a hearing aid provider in San Luis
Obispo county in California, is being accused of
insurance fraud and pretending to be a doctor.
The attorney defending the provider said he is a
Board Certified audioprosthologist, and has never
pretended to be an audiologist. The authorities,
however, is not convinced.

A SURPRISE WAKE UP FROM QUICK NAP
On the Washington, DC metro, DeafDigest editor was taking a short
and quick nap, waking up at each station to make sure he did not miss
his stop.
Suddenly a stranger next to him accidentally poked his elbow,
waking up the DeafDigest editor.
Puzzled, he looked at the stranger. It was a deaf person signing
to another deaf person.
The DeafDigest editor did not know the deaf stranger.

STUCK IN A CROWDED HEARING HOTEL LOBBY
At deaf conventions, hotel lobbies are always crowded,
and we always tap on deaf shoulders, telling them “excuse
me” when we walk through with our bags.
It is different with crowded hearing lobbies at
hearing conventions. We cannot tap them on the shoulders
because it is considered assault and battery.
And for a deaf person who cannot speak, very hard to
say “excuse me.”
What should the deaf person do? Wave in front of a
hearing person, asking him to please move?
Many hearing people don’t like hands to be waved in
front of their eyes!

A COMMENT BY AN ADVOCATE IN IRELAND
An advocate for the deaf in Ireland made this comment:
We need a lot more awareness especially in relation to sign language
interpreters, access for the deaf community. People seem to know more
about other disabilities in Ireland but always seem to forget about the
deaf community. It is almost like we are a hidden disability, of sorts
HANGING ART IN RESTAURANTS
Many restaurants hang on the walls the pieces of art by local artists.
A few of these artists are deaf. Yet we have no way of knowing
about it unless someone mentions it or if a newspaper story
mentions it.
The reality is that we have many, many talented deaf artists
that we do not know about.
MANY FOOD TRUCKS ARE NOT DEAF FRIENDLY
We see more food trucks everywhere – in downtowns, city parks,
public events, etc.
Many of these food trucks are not deaf-friendly. The lines are
long and the vendors often do not slow down to communicate with
the deaf. And it is not easy for a deaf person to point at a
posted menu because the vendor cannot see it unless he steps
out of the truck to see what the deaf person is pointing at!
Much different with hotdog carts. Just point at it and
the vendor knows it.
A DEAF OWNER OF A RESTAURANT
We have known of deaf people owning restaurants in
Los Angeles, Austin, Texas and San Francisco.
Here is another one – Matt O’Varanese, who is deaf,
owns The Standard, a restaurant in Stanardville, VA.
It is near Charlottesville, VA, where the famous University of Virginia is located.
A web search said that he is classically trained in
the ways of cooking up great meals.

A. This question was asked of a railroad industry veteran. He said:
I doubt that any railroad would allow deaf engineers because of the use of
the radio for all communications. All personal electronics are prohibited
while operating as a crew member of the train. Also at your physical it is
required to pass a hearing exam for any job at the railroad.

I use a cutting board almost daily and I have some issues with the food running away from the board!
I received an OXO good grip cutting board/scoop as a gift. It has a curved tip on 3 sides.
It was a sure way to scrape the cut food to the bowl.
Another use which I have found it handy for is peeling potatoes and scraping the peels into the waste container!
This is a sure way to avoid searching for food on the floor before the mouse finds it!

THE OPPORTUNITY
Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. is seeking
a talented and versatile professional for the position of Associate
Director. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong,
clear commitment to expanding and diversifying TDI’s revenue streams

QUALIFICATIONS
* A Masters’ Degree of Arts/Science is preferred. However, the

The therapist will be able to work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotion disorders and promote optimal mental health with Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults and children. The therapist must have knowledge of therapeutic best practices for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and be able to apply cultural and linguistic bridging to promote optimal mental health.
They should be fluent in and culturally competent in American Sign Language and therefore has the ability to communicate directly with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals who sign. They also need to be able to communicate directly with hard of hearing clients who do not use sign language.
Therapists are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address wide range of issues including depression, addiction, and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress management, problems with self esteem issues associated with aging, job or career concerns, educational decisions, adjustment issues, parenting, grief marital or relationship problems, as well as others.
Therapists need to be able to be flexible to work on a team and with in various structures in the community mental health system. BJC Behavioral Health utilizes electronic medical records. The therapist must have knowledge of Microsoft software including MS Word and have enough computer knowledge to be able to learn a new computer program.

Qualifications:
Prefer Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, psychology, nursing or equivalent field with three years experience with deaf persons who have additional disabilities, especially with mental illness and mental retardation, and two years experience in administration; strong background in clinical consultation and behavior management; prefer fluency in sign language and knowledge of psycho-social-cultural aspects of deafness.

who are fluent in American Sign Language and knowledgeable about Deaf
Culture and the Deaf Community to fill the following positions:
- RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR: (Full time position) The qualified
candidate shall possess: HS Diploma and 5 years of Mental Health
direct care experience, fluency in ASL, knowledge of Deaf Culture.
Excellent writing and communication skills required.
Responsibilities: Day to day management and supervision of
residential setting for deaf adults with mental illness and
behavioral health concerns. Supervision of direct care staff,
development of residential programming and staff schedules, planning
and leading staff meetings, coordinate staff trainings, manage petty
cash and consumer funds, coordinate consumer services with
internal/outside agency providers and families, conduct consumer and
staff interviews, complete monthly reports, service plans and staff
evaluations, follow up with physical and psychiatric medical
concerns.
- INTENSIVE CASE MANAGERS: (Full time position) This position provides
resources and support to clients and their families who reside in the
community. Duties: Responsibilities include assessing services needs
of consumers, primarily children, to insure continuum of care;
develop service plans; independent living skills instructions,
advocate for access to public & private services and programs such as
medical, vocational and other services. Qualifications: BA/BS degree
in a Human Services field preferred; or High school diploma & 12
credit hours in human/social science with 2 years mental health
direct care experience. Must have strong organizational skills;
fluency in ASL, familiarity with other visual communication modes and
language levels. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends
as needed and travel various areas in the community. Knowledge of
laws governing the rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals
including IDEA and ADA a plus; and must have a valid driver’s
license.
- THERAPIST/PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION COUNSELOR: (Full time
position) This position provides therapeutic and psycho-educational
workshops and group sessions for consumers who are deaf. The
qualified candidate shall possess: BA in psychology, counseling or
any other human services field; must have 2 years’ experience with
individuals with mental illness and/or mental retardation including
treatment planning and progress notes; advanced fluency in ASL
required; must be innovative, creative and be able to work in a team
environment. Duties: Develop, coordinate and provide
group/individual therapy for wellness maintenance and
psycho-educational workshops.
- RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position
provides direct client services including encouraging client
independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community
integration. Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf
consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities
living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social
relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.
Qualifications: HS + 1 year related experience; valid drivers’
license; advanced fluency in ASL; demonstrated competency in
independent living skills; ability to teach, advise and motivate Deaf
Consumers; strong interpersonal skills.

Client Support Specialist
DCARA
position located in San Jose, CA
DCARA has a full-time non-exempt job opening for the position of Client Supports Specialist at the DCARA San Jose office. This position provides a wide range of peer counseling, community education, workshops and advocacy on behalf of the diverse Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in the Santa Clara County area. The position reports to the Director of Client Support Services.
REPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide the following services: peer counseling, advocacy, communication assistance, independent living skills, information & referral and community education.
- Ensure completion of intake paperwork, Individual Services Plans, statistical information and monthly reports. - Work with the Director of Client Support Services to develop linkages and working relationships with governmental and community-based organization/agencies in the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County that provide services to the Deaf community, as well as other agencies primarily serving deaf community.
- Represents DCARA and/or the deaf community at meetings and community events.
- Provide Deaf culture sensitivity trainings or other related presentations at locations outside the office or conduct home visits as needed; must be able to arrange for own transportation.
- Coordinate special projects as delegated by the Director of Client Support Services.
Required Skills
- BA degree in Social Services, Deaf Studies or related fields; OR 3 years of documented experience working in service provision to the Deaf Community or work in a human services setting.
- Fluent in American Sign Language & fully knowledgeable of Deaf Culture
- Knowledge of relevant issues associated with the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened community.
- Experience with PC including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, as well as a team player.
- Ability to work with people from a variety of racial, economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
