Top stories about the deaf:
Thinkso’s 2013 Give a Brand! has awarded the
Deaf Abused Women’s Network with a pro bono
branding. What this means is that DAWN will be
getting a professional make-over in an effort
to get high profile attention of its services
on behalf of deaf women that need assistance.
An abused deaf victim who was not provided with
an interpreter cost the city of Portland, Oregon
$51,500 in damages. The city has then agreed
to provide interpreters for the deaf in the future.
Finally after a year of waiting, the Virginia School
for the Deaf and the Blind now has a new principal.
It is long time teacher Pat Trice, who has a masters
from Gallaudet.
As a child Claudia Gordon came to USA from Jamaica,
and enrolled at Lexington School for the Deaf, becoming
a basketball star. Years later she is now a recent Obama
appointee, advising him on the needs of the disabled.
We now can add Hungary to one more nation offering
vido relay services for the deaf. It only just started
this week.

MOVIES ON FLIGHT
United Airlines has something new. It is movies for everyone from
behind the seats. A passenger has about 200 different movies to pick out
from. Must play with screen commands to pick the movie.
Are the movies captioned? Yes and no. About 150 movies are American,
and all of them are not captioned, but there were about 50 foreigh movies,
all of them captioned with choice of language.
Some captioned movies were good with serious plots. Other captions were
“karate action” crime movies made in China, South Korea and Japan.
If you are not a crime drama fan, then you are stuck!

STREET LANGUAGES IN PARIS
DeafDigest editor went to Paris for vacation. Not his first time in
Paris. Went to Paris about 3-4 times in the past.
What is the difference between Paris 10 years ago and now? Is is street
languages!
Ten years ago, people spoke only French on the streets. Now, it is
English, English and English. Many tourists from USA, Canada, Australia,
South Africa, India, etc visit Paris and they all speak English on the
Paris streets.
Would a deaf person realize the changing of languages? No!

Deaf Question of the Week:
Q. We have already known about the Starbucks discrimination lawsuit
by a small group of New York deaf coffee drinkers. Why was this
happening?
A. Very puzzling. The Starbucks baristas, for the most part, are
courteous, friendly and experienced with the customers. Possibly
there were incidents that led to ill-will between these disgruntled
deaf coffee drinkers and the baristas – which led to this lawsuit.
Truth may surface in the courtroom! DeafDigest editor is a coffee
drinker and he goes to Starbucks in many American cities as well
as in Madrid and Paris and there was never an ugly incident.

Swimming
Many of us like to swim! There is an issue of support while we swim.
We know we cannot depend on SSP, friends and family all the time.
How can we swim without bumping into strangers?
At a public or private pool, talk to whoever is in charge.
Discuss your needs while you swimming with the staff.
One simple solution is to rope off one lane to allow us to swim unimpeded.
This will be accessible and rope can be used as a guide.
Anther option? Adult swim time! There are less people and roping
one lane can still be done to meet for your needs.
Umm, diving board? That’s another story!

focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
