A voice song becoming a vibration song on a

wireless paging device? Yes, as there is a new

app for that purpose to help the deaf enjoy

the music. It will be demonstrated at the

Cartagena International Music Festival in

Cartagena, Colombia.

There is a tug of war struggle between two allied

groups regarding the amending of the Federal Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act

(as known as the Cogswell Bill). One group

wants sign language; other group is opposed to

sign language. Same old news!

EBay is asking the court to throw out the court case

filed by a deaf woman that complained of discrimination

when she had to use voice telephone to confirm her

identity. The judge is taking it under advisement.

Deaf British leaders are complaining that the non-profit

agencies, supposed to help the deaf, really do not hire

the deaf.

The Barclays is a big financial service company in Great

Britain. It discriminated against deaf customers in the past. Ashok Vaswani, the Barclays chief, admitted

his bank was wrong in practicing discrimination but promised

it would be no more.

TWO DEAF ENEMIES CARRY THE USA FLAG

Two deaf USA Deaflympics athletes both hate

each other. They have almost fought each other

several times but their teammates have broke

up each fight.

It was a big shock when the USA Deaflympics

chairperson selected both athletes to carry

the USA flag during the Deaflympics parade on

opening day. He was warned that these athletes

hate each other, but he would not listen.

Who were these athletes? Not saying but it

happened about 40-45 years ago!

ANOTHER DEAF ELECTION PROBLEMS

About 35 years ago, a deaf national organization

had an election.

Two deaf candidates opposed each other. One of

them won easily. The vote teller counted the ballots

and found there were more votes than there were

voting delegates!

It forced a re-vote and the same candidate

won with votes equal to number of delegates.

A SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF IN GHANA MAY BE KICKED OUT

The Mampong School for the Deaf, in Ghana, may be

kicked out.

Reason is that the new landlord wanted to hike the

rent on the school’s rental premises. The previous landlord

gave the school a break with low rental costs in 35 years of the

school’s existence.

At this point, no one knows what to do or what is going

to happen.

A DEAF TEACHING TENNIS PROFESSIONAL

Many deaf people like to play recreational tennis, but

there are very few, if any, deaf teaching tennis pros

at tennis and recreational facilities.

There is one – Jenny Woyahn, who is deaf, is a teaching

tennis pro at the Midtown Athletic Club, Palatine, Illinois.

She spends her time teaching youngsters how to play this

sport.

DeafDigest does not know if she has taught deaf people

how to play tennis.

The sun is important for our planet.

For us with Usher Syndrome it can be very bright and bothersome.

I love being outdoors but I am starting to get frustrated due to the

sun.

One solution is to wear a baseball cap or wide rim hat.

This helps a bit but can still bother the side of our eyes.

We will need special glasses or sunglasses with side blocks.

Now you see why we always move you around so we can see you better!

You might need to apply sun screen while we chat away from our spot

in the shade!

Elite Deaf Athletes:

Gallaudet’s Tony Tatum became a starter in his third Arena

Football League game, as cornerback for Utah Blaze. His

team lost 69-39 to Philadelphia Soul in the last game

of the season.

In the losing game, Tony made two solo tackles and one assisted tackle and broke up one pass.

For the season, he has played 3 games (other games he didn’t play

was coaches’ decision); he made 9 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles,

intercepted 2 passes for 16 yards and one pass break up.

DeafDigest hopes Tony will stay with the team; he was a late season

roster addition, missing the entire training camp.

Description of Work: This position provides culturally affirmative mental health services to deaf and hard of hearing adults coping with mental health issues in Duluth, MN and Northeast Minnesota. The main responsibility of the Mental Health Specialist is to provide psychotherapy/ counseling services and the remaining of time will include clinical case management/coordination, consultation, training, aftercare planning, and community placement assistance for deaf and hard of hearing adults. The candidate will be housed in Duluth and will travel in Northeast Minnesota on a regular basis.

Main Responsibilities: Provide direct mental health services (independently or with supervision) to deaf and hard-of-hearing adults and their families. Responsibilities include: individual/couples/family/group psychotherapy, intake evaluation, treatment planning, some clinical case management, inter-agency coordination, and psycho-education. Complete intake evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other reports as required. Some consultation duties are also involved (in-services and workshops on Deaf culture and mental health). Maintain close contact with local acute psychiatric units and group homes ensuring that their services are accessible for deaf and hard-of-hearing clients. Assist in client capacity building in the regions covered.

Preferred Qualifications:

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)

Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or behavioral-health related field

At least 2 years advanced profession experience, OR 1 year advanced professional experience plus 2 years professional experience providing direct mental health services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals Licensed or license-eligible for LPC, LPCC, LP, LICSW or LMFT in the state of Minnesota

Knowledge of clinical/crisis interventions and psychiatric medications

Ability to provide consultation services to mental health care organizations

Ability to complete required reports, case files, and other paperwork duties accurately and in a timely manner Ability to multi-task and cope under stressful circumstances

Excellent client advocacy and interpersonal skills

Thorough knowledge of relevant professional codes of ethics and DSM diagnoses

Fully competent in Deaf and hearing cross-cultures

Willingness to perform some duties at remote work sites, involving some statewide travel

Program Manager – Community Rehabilitation Services

Maine Center on Deafness

Portland, Maine

Maine Center on Deafness is on the fast track, seeking applications

for the position of Program Manager for a newly developed,

grant-funded position to provide Community Rehabilitation Services to

Deaf individuals and people with hearing loss in the Greater Portland

area. This is a position for a highly motivated self-starter with

management skills and experience who can comply with new requirements

and expectations for job development and job coaching. The Program

Manager will follow enhanced standards for serving nontraditional job

seekers who are Deaf or have hearing loss. This is a 20 hour per week

benefits-eligible position with the potential to expand.

Position Overview: The Program Manager will be responsible for the

following duties and expectations:

*  Work with the State of Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Services to

learn the newly-developed structure of Community Rehabilitation

Providers (CRP) in Maine

*  Develop relationships with employers to “sell” them on the idea

of hiring these job seekers

*  Develop and direct an Advisory Council of invested partners to

meet on a quarterly basis to ensure program quality and service

provision

*  Recruit, manage, and supervise three CRP’s (job coaches) in their

work directly with job seekers and employers, and the completion

of required paperwork

*  Prepare and report to Director of Financial Operations

qualitative and quantitative program data to satisfy City of

Portland HUD grant funding requirements

*  Provide some direct CRP service to job seekers.

Position Requirements: The Program Manager must meet the following

requirements:

*  Fluency in American Sign Language along with strong written

English and face-to-face communication skills

*  Comfort and ability to communicate via live video technology and

other adaptive equipment

*  Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint computer systems,

including documentation in a standardized database

*  Completion of ACRE (Association of Community Rehabilitation

Educators) certification course or commitment to successfully

complete the course by January 1, 2014

*  Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with clients of

varying communication methods who may have multiple disabilities

*  The chosen candidate will be required to submit to a criminal

background and a motor vehicle record check that meets company

standards.

Additional Requirements: Applicants must possess excellent

interpersonal, communication and writing, time management and

follow-through skills. Any applicant must be a self-starter able to

manage multiple assignments with minimal oversight, must be able to

work effectively as a member of a small team and in collaboration

with the community, and be fluent in American Sign Language.

Interviews will contain components in both English (may be written)

and ASL. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and use of

a reliable, insured vehicle. Extensive travel expected and some

periodic overnight travel may be required. Experience in office

management, Microsoft Office and Access, and front-line service

delivery is a must. Strong customer relations and/or sales background

and previous experience working with D/deaf, Hard of Hearing,

Late-Deafened and Deaf-Blind populations is greatly desired.

The position reports directly to the Executive Director, coordinates

projects with other managers and contributes to the advancement of

MCD’s mission and vision.

REPORTS TO:        Executive Director

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION: To provide education leadership and supervision of the High School faculty, staff and students in the development and implementation of curriculum and instructional programs to meet the student learning needs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: .    To provide leadership and participate in the development and implementation of curriculum designed to prepare students to meet NY State learning standards, and to satisfy the requirements for NY State High School and /or IEP Diplomas, as appropriate

.    Plan, develop and implement instructional programs to prepare students for post-secondary education, training, employment and community living, and to integrate vocational and career education into overall high school program

.    Develop and implement a program of transition planning that meets all State and Federal requirements, that involves students and families in long-range academic and career planning, and that is fully integrated within the Annual Review process as required by the IEP

.    Review course requirements and determine class assignments and develop master schedule, student schedules and teacher and teacher assistant schedules

.    Oversee student placement, grading, advancement and recommend students for graduation

.    Direct and assist in management of student’s behavior and discipline as needed

.    Evaluate the performance of teachers, teacher assistants and other departmental staff and recommend techniques and methods of improvement as needed

.    Provide models of effective teaching strategies to instructional staff as needed

.    Recommend the transfer, promotion or termination of high school faculty and staff .    Recommend purchase of supplies, materials and equipment for the high school

.    Supervise and monitor all state education requirements, such as RCT/Regents and other testing programs, the IEP process, fire drills, etc.

.    Approve all extra-curricular time for high school faculty and staff.

.    With other administrators, develop, coordinate and direct professional development programs for all high school teachers and teacher assistants. .    With other administrators, recommend and monitor new or revised school policies and procedures.

.    Communicate regularly with parents about High School activities and meet with parents to discuss individual needs or special problems as needed

.    Ensure sensitivity to cultural differences within the school community.

.    Prepare necessary reports pertaining to students, staff and programs in the High School

.    Respond to inquiries and general correspondence regarding education programs and ensure the general welfare of students and staff.

.    Ensure that obligations under the labor contract are executed properly.  Attempt to resolve differences or disputes before they become issues.

.    Work cooperatively with local schools districts, agencies, parents, staff and students on intramural and extramural educational programs of benefit to Fanwood students.

.    All other duties assigned by the Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

.    Possess NYS Certification as Teacher of the Deaf

.    Possess or eligible for NYS Certification in Supervision and/or Administration

.    Masters Degree in Deaf Education or other related field

.    A sign language SCPI level of Advanced with a minimum entry level of Intermediate Within first 30 months of employment, candidate must obtain Advanced level .    Strong written communication skills

.    Ability to work flexible hours as needs of the program dictate

.    Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience, preferably with high school students

.    Previous supervisory experience preferred

Title: Employment Specialist – Full Time

Locations:

Compensation: $27,000-$30,000 Description: The Employment Specialist will

provide job search, placement, and coaching activities including contacting

employers, creating resumes, preparing individuals for interviews, and

scheduling appointments for interviews. The Specialist will provide job

coaching and employment support to consumers in community sites assisting in

overcoming barriers to employment while maintaining quality assurance,

productivity and efficiency to the employer. Other responsibilities include

acting as an advocate and liaison for consumers working in the community,

Description:

People Incorporated’s Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services  is a case management program located in St. Paul. We are seeking a full-time Case Manager II (360001). Case management services are provided to adult residents of Ramsey County who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Referrals are received from Ramsey County and eligibility for services is based upon criteria for Rule 79 Adult Mental Health Targeted Case Management or Vulnerable Adult/DD.

The schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm. Duties:

Case managers meet with recipients on a monthly basis, assess their needs and work with the individual to create a treatment plan. The case manager coordinates services with other providers to assist the individual with satisfying the goals of the treatment plan. Areas addressed include medical monitoring, financial stability and assistance, vocational coordination; help with independent living skills, housing assistance, and problem solving. We provide a culturally and linguistically accessible case management service for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind adults.

Primary areas of responsibility for the Case Manager IIinclude the following: Review Diagnostic Assessments Complete screenings, functional assessments & level of care reassessments Develop ICSP & ongoing updates Implement the ICSP Acquire resources, services & natural supports Monitor and Coordinate the review of goal progress and effectiveness of services, resources and supports
