“Deaf and Hearing Siblings in Conversations” at Harris Communications
“Deaf and Hearing Siblings in Conversations” (B1287) is the first
book to consider both deaf and hearing perspectives on the dynamics
of adult sibling relationships.
The authors, Marla C. Berkowitz (Deaf) and Judith A. Jonas (sibling
of a deaf adult), conducted interviews with 22 adult siblings using
ASL and spoken English to access their intimate thoughts. A major
feature of the book is its analysis of how isolation impacts
deaf-hearing sibling relationships.
Throughout the book the authors present information on attitudes
towards American Sign Language and the various roles deaf and hearing
siblings take on as monitors, facilitators, signing-siblings and
sibling-interpreters, all of which impact lifelong bonds.

THESE POLICE GESTURES
A police officer was asked if they use gestures while
chasing criminals in dangerous situations.
This police officer explained that SWAT teams use
signs and gestures to communicate in situations where
silence is required.
If we, the deaf, watch these SWAT communications, we
probably will easily understand what they are saying.

Happy New Year
My home is going through renovations of the master bedroom.
My family has gone to warmer climates to celebrate the New Year.
Once the workers have left the house for the day, I am all alone.
During the evening, the floor needed to be swept but the
broom was nowhere to be found!
The workers borrowed the broom and didn’t put it back!
(They played “hide and seek” with the DeafBlind man!)
Now, that’s a reminder to everyone-when you take something,
please return it to the same place. This is very important.

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is looking for a full-time Staff
Interpreter to be housed in its headquarters office in Tallahassee,
Florida. The Staff Interpreter will work with the VR Deaf, Hard of
Hearing, and Deaf-Blind team, and is responsible for statewide
consultations to staff and the general public relating to interpreting
services and general communication methods for individuals who are deaf
and deaf-blind. The Staff Interpreter will also assist in potentially
developing/coordinating a statewide Support Services Provider (SSP)
project.
The applicant for this position shall have high quality interpreting
skills, knowledge of accommodations for individuals who are deaf-blind,
and a good understanding of the VR process. This position requires a
minimum of a high school diploma plus a credential in sign-language
interpreting (e.g., state, national) in good standing, and preference will
be given to those who have experience working with individuals who are
deaf-blind. Salary is negotiable based on experience; the minimum starting
salary is $30,718.69.

preferred (1 year of experience equals 20-25 hours per week for average of
50 weeks per year)

– Pass drug screening and background check
– Clear an FBI Fingerprint Criminal History Summary
– Valid New Mexico Driver License, proof of insurance and New Mexico
Motor Vehicle Division Motor Vehicle Report
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
– Bachelor’s degree
– EIPA 3.6 or greater (each tenth of a point increase above EIPA 3.5
constitutes an additional Desired Qualification (DQ) credit, e.g. EIPA 3.6
provides one DQ credit; EIPA 3.7 provides two DQ credits, etc.)
– Completion of formal internship/mentee program
– Additional years of directly related experience
– 200 documented mentee hours
SALARY $18.00 – $22.50 depending on experience and educational
background

Johnson County, Kansas
Johnson County Mental Health Department is looking for a qualified
candidate to fill the position of team leader for their Deaf Services
program. The team leader will provide administrative and clinical
supervision to a team that provides a range of community and office
based services with Deaf adults and some children experiencing severe
mental illness. The focus is on recovery primarily utilizing the
Strengths Based Case Management model of practice.
The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge regarding
community-based services, supervision of staff, Deaf culture, ASL fluency,
plus strong organizational and leadership skills.
Job duties include:
– Provides clinical supervision of Supported Housing staff, Case Managers
and Clinicians.
– Responds to clinical needs of the Adult Services program. Responds to
crises on team as well as crises on other teams when needed; conducts
various assessments and screenings as needed.
– Provides information to people seeking services. Coordinates with
internal and external providers and family members, facilitating coordination
of care.
– Ensures that documentation complies with Center and State guidelines;
oversees team documentation and provide training to team.
– Ensures evidenced-based practices follow center protocols and meet
expected standards.
– Participates in the planning, management, and administration of the Adult
Services program and participates in leadership roles within the agency as
a whole.
– Participates in the hiring process for staff on the team; reviews and
approves leave requests of employees; and provides or secures coverage for
staff when on unexpected leave as necessary.
Requirements: Fluent in American Sign Language; Kansas licensure at the
Master’s level (e.g. LSCSW, LMSW, LPC, LCPC, LMLP, LCP, LCMFT) is required
along with one year of supervisory experience and three years of clinical
experience working with adults. Kansas licensure at the Clinical level and
one year of experience working in a community based services environment
preferred. A good driving record is required.
The Johnson County Mental Health Department is part of the Johnson County

Position Summary:
The Department of Linguistics seeks applicants for an appointment as
Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program,

This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The

Responsibilities include teaching and research in the areas of
