Deaf people that use interpreters to allow them

to function in jobs in Great Britain may be

facing a crisis as the government may cut back

on funding of these interpeters.

The state of Minnesota officially celebrated the

Martin Luther King Jr Day. One of the people

honored is Galinda Goss-Kuehn. She is deaf and

is being honored for her work with the Deaf Adult

Four small Japanese towns have set up a set of procedures

to send emergency messages for deaf residents in case of

disasters (floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc).

LAST MINUTE AIR FLIGHTS IMPOSSIBLE FOR SOME DEAF

Last minute air flights are not impossible, depending on

vacant seats. But for some deaf people, it may be

impossible at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

This airport requires 48 hours advance notice for

deaf people with Cochlear Implants or with hearing aids. The reason

is screening by x-ray and the security people do not

want last minute problems.

But for deaf people without CI or hearing aids, they are

OK for last minute tickets.

A DEAF STUFF SOLD OUT

Several times in DeafDigest, it was mentioned

that the Grace Coolidge coin had a big irony.

She taught at Clarke School for the Deaf before

she married and became the First Presidential

Lady.

Yet the coin had this U-S-A fingerspelled.

Clarke School has never permitted the use of

sign language nor of the fingerspelling. Anyway

this coin, open for public sale, was sold out.

Most coin sales last for some time, but this

Coolidge coin was quickly gone! This information

· Researches grant and other funding opportunities. Submits proposals

to strengthen the work service delivery system.

attending related seminars and conferences. Applies pertinent new

knowledge to performance of other responsibilities and shares

information with VR Staff.

Minimum Training & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a related field

and two years of related experience Or Master’s degree in a related

field Or Five years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to meeting the minimum qualification, preference will be

given to applicants with the following qualifications.

· Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation, counseling,

psychology, education or a related field

· One year work experience in human service delivery capacity with

persons with sensory disabilities

· Current certification by the Commission on Counselor Certification

· Minimum of Intermediate Sign language skill level as measured by

the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLIPI).

Interpreter to be housed in its headquarters office in Tallahassee,

Florida. The Staff Interpreter will work with the VR Deaf, Hard of

Hearing, and Deaf-Blind team, and is responsible for statewide

consultations to staff and the general public relating to interpreting

services and general communication methods for individuals who are deaf

and deaf-blind. The Staff Interpreter will also assist in potentially

developing/coordinating a statewide Support Services Provider (SSP)

project.

The applicant for this position shall have high quality interpreting

skills, knowledge of accommodations for individuals who are deaf-blind,

and a good understanding of the VR process. This position requires a

minimum of a high school diploma plus a credential in sign-language

interpreting (e.g., state, national) in good standing, and preference will

be given to those who have experience working with individuals who are

deaf-blind. Salary is negotiable based on experience; the minimum starting

salary is $30,718.69.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Provides interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hearing

consumers in a variety of educational and community settings including

medical, mental health, vocational and social services.  Documents

interpreting time and activities for billing purposes.  Position may from

time to time be stressful and require a high demand of performance. May

perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

–    Provides interpreting and transliterating services between

American Sign Language and English in a variety of educational and

community settings including medical, mental health, vocational, social

services, etc.

–    Assists with in-house and walk-in interpreting services

–    Documents interpreting time for billing purposes

–    Assists with educational interpreting and emergency coverage as

schedule permits

–    Meets the productivity requirements as outlined in the employment

agreement

–    Maintains high professional standards in accordance with the RID

Code of Professional Conduct, ensuring quality interpreting services for

the Hearing and Deaf consumers

–    May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

–    Graduate of an ITP or Associates (directly related experience may

substitute for education requirements)

–    Quality Assurance Rating from any state, or NAD 3, or EIPA 3.5

–    Current valid New Mexico Interpreter License

–    1 year of interpreting experience, community interpreting

preferred (1 year of experience equals 20-25 hours per week for average of

50 weeks per year)

–    Fluent ASL

–    Pass drug screening and background check

–    Clear an FBI Fingerprint Criminal History Summary

–    Valid New Mexico Driver License, proof of insurance and New Mexico

Motor Vehicle Division Motor Vehicle Report

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

–    Bachelor’s degree

–    EIPA 3.6 or greater (each tenth of a point increase above EIPA 3.5

constitutes an additional Desired Qualification (DQ) credit, e.g. EIPA 3.6

provides one DQ credit; EIPA 3.7 provides two DQ credits, etc.)

–    Completion of formal internship/mentee program

–    Additional years of directly related experience

–    200 documented mentee hours

SALARY        $18.00 – $22.50 depending on experience and educational

background

Assistant Professor: Signed Language Interpreting Program

Position Summary:

The Department of Linguistics seeks applicants for an appointment as

Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program,

at the University of New Mexico (UNM).

This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The

position is contingent upon final budgetary approval. Appointment will

begin in August 2015. The Ph.D. must be in hand by start date.

Responsibilities include teaching and research in the areas of

specialization and service.

Competitive salary. The Department of Linguistics at UNM specializes in

cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus

and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology.

The Signed Language Interpreting Program offers a B.S. Degree in Signed

Language Interpreting. The mission of the Signed Language Interpreting

Program is to prepare entry level interpreters and transliterators with a

thorough understanding of the practice and ethics of the interpreting

profession within a liberal arts environment. We emphasize cultural

awareness, foster intellectual growth, and encourage academic excellence.

(e) minimum of 3 years of experience as a working interpreter; and

Detailed Job Description

We are seeking an individual who will contribute has the ability and

interest in contributing to a community committed to student

centeredness; professional development and scholarship; integrity and

This faculty member will:

– Provide direct instruction in the first and second year machining

and computer numerical control courses in our Associate degree program

in Computer Integration Machining Technology.

– Provide tutoring support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students

enrolled in the College of Applied and Science Technology.

– Develop curriculum for existing programs and/or potential new

programs.

– Promote partnerships with industry and other academic settings.

– Work with the NTID Center of Employment to assist students in

finding cooperative work experiences.

– Mentor and advise students.

– Fulfill other faculty expectations and departmental needs.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing
