Top stories about the deaf:

the College Bowl will take place at Atlanta, GA on

July 1-5, 2014. For years the bowl teams consisted

of the big 3 – Gallaudet, NTID, and CSUN. The

last competition, in 2012, involved other colleges -

SWCID, U of Minnesota and U of Texas. Possibly

more colleges will join the competition this summer.

Why do deaf people inherit their deafness? A team of

researchers from the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal is saying it has something to do with

proteins in the inner ear hair cells.

A new program is being built in Great Britain to help

the deaf appreciate music better. It is called Interactive Music Awareness Program.

An interpreting agency in one part of London is facing eviction because of housing rules giving priority to

individuals in need of housing as opposed to businesses in need of housing! The agency is upset and is fighting

back!

MAGIC DEAF EARS

DeafDigest editor is tired of reading about the CI

described as Magic Ears. This phrase shows up often in

newspapers and news stories.

Why magic ears? Magic means something so amazing.

With a CI, the user must practice learning sounds and

voices. Practice is not magic.

A BAD INCIDENT BECAUSE HEARING WON’T WRITE NOTES

A true story. A deaf club hosted a deaf softball

tournament on private property. The club paid rent

to use that property.

Fans attending the tournament must pay admission

fee. A hearing person came and tried to enter the

private property. The deaf gatekeeper refused to

allow him. He said something that the deaf person

did not understand.

The hearing person got very angry. The deaf

gatekeeper asked him to write on a notepad. The

hearing person refused.

The tension between the deaf person and hearing

person got worse. Luckily an interpreter saw the

whole thing and volunteered to interpret.

The hearing person said he is a member of the

archery club which was on the other side of the

private property.

The deaf person allowed him to enter. But

why wouldn’t the hearing person write a note?

YOU ARE DEAF AND ARE BREAKING THE LAW IF:

You are a Pennsylvanian and sang to yourself in sign

language while in the bathtub.

A law-abiding hearing person would catch the offending

hearing singer and warn of this law-breaking offense before

a police officer could nab the offender.

A law-abiding deaf person would be clueless to the sign

singing by the bathtub occupant!

Note: Many laws, enacted years ago, remain on

the books even though their purposes may have

faded into obscurity. If you know of such

ridiculous laws that impact on the deaf, please

Q. Many TV programs have commercials that are not captioned. Why are we more concerned with non-captions

on Super Bowl commercials than with other TV programs?

A. The Super Bowl not only features two best teams in
