Top stories about the deaf:

The new Gallaudet chair of board of trustees, effective October 1, 2004, is Heather Harker. She replaces Ben Soukup. And the contract of Gallaudet president Alan Hurwitz has been extended to December 31, 2015. In case one asks, yes,

Harker is deaf.

Medford Care Center, a nursing facility in New Jersey, has

agreed to provide interpreters for deaf patients. This agreement

was reached with the state officials.

Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind hosted an open house

discussion, inviting the alumni and friends. The assembly hall was packed, much to the surprise of observers. A big issue

was addressing the low enrollment of students on the campus.

Over 500 British deaf people will assemble on March 17th at the Westminster to tell the MPs of their rights and needs.

A group of 7 swimmers will be swimming across the English

Channel in relay turns this coming July. This event is to raise funds for the Irish Deaf Women’s Group.

A MOTHER OPPOSING HER DEAF DAUGHTER FROM ATTENDING GALLAUDET

It probably may not happen these days but it happened about

30-35 years ago.

An ambitious young deaf woman wanted to attend Gallaudet. Her

mother vigorously opposed it, feeling that deaf women are only good

for employment, marriage and family.

Despite violent arguments, the mother was steadfast in her refusal.

The deaf woman was forced to abandon her life dreams.

DeafDigest editor knew her and still feels about it.

DEAF PEOPLE WITH PERFECT SPEECH

There are some deaf people with perfect speech. They practiced

their speech every day all their lives until it has become perfect.

But their perfect speech comes at a price. Many hearing people

refuse to believe that these perfect-speech people are deaf.

And as a result, there have been unpleasant moments while mingling

with the hearing.

This is the reason why some of these perfect-speech deaf are

more comfortable with the deaf!

A SCARY NEW JERSEY PLAN FOR SMALL INTERPRETING AGENCIES

For years small interpreting agencies were contracted to do

interpreting for deaf clients in New Jersey.

This may change. The state department of treasury wants

to create a request for proposal, that would allow out of

state interpreting agencies to compete for these bids.

The New Jersey interpreters are fighting this plan.

Q. Do we have the technology to separate captions from

I remember when I identified as Deaf only and was not yet identifying myself

as DeafBlind.

I felt it was very important for Deaf people to make their own decisions.

It was important for Deaf people to lead all things about their own lives

and their own education.

Now I am DeafBlind.  I want my Deaf(and hearing friends to know that

DeafBlind people should be leading their own lives and making their own decisions.  They should also be the leaders in organizations that are designed to meet their needs.
