Top stories about the deaf:

Don Feare, a police officer in Weatherford, Texas

was honored by his peers for his handling of

a 16-year old deaf girl who was going through

domestic issues at home. At the end, the grateful

girl showed the police officer her name-sign.

L’Chef is a catalog company in St George, Utah,

specializing in kitchen equipment. It sells

products under the names of Nutrimill, Bosch and

L’Equip. After hiring a group of deaf people

to work in the factory, the general manager

has asked the Southern Utah State Services

to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to help teach

ASL with the hearing employees. So far, the

general manager is very happy with these

deaf employees.

The executives at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma,

have been discussing with deaf leaders on how to

make their facility accessible.

Supreme Sign Institute, an agency in Ghana, is pushing

all service providers to use sign language to communicate

with deaf clients.

Punjab University in Pakistan has awarded a doctorate to

Ayesha Imtiaz. The thesis is interesting – Identification

A MOTHER OPPOSING HER DEAF DAUGHTER FROM ATTENDING GALLAUDET

It probably may not happen these days but it happened about

30-35 years ago.

An ambitious young deaf woman wanted to attend Gallaudet. Her

mother vigorously opposed it, feeling that deaf women are only good

for employment, marriage and family.

Despite violent arguments, the mother was steadfast in her refusal.

The deaf woman was forced to abandon her life dreams.

DeafDigest editor knew her and still feels about it.

DEAF PEOPLE WITH PERFECT SPEECH

There are some deaf people with perfect speech. They practiced

their speech every day all their lives until it has become perfect.

But their perfect speech comes at a price. Many hearing people

refuse to believe that these perfect-speech people are deaf.

And as a result, there have been unpleasant moments while mingling

with the hearing.

This is the reason why some of these perfect-speech deaf are

more comfortable with the deaf!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

A few years ago, I ordered flowers for Valentine Day.

My neighbor came to my door with the flowers.

I was puzzled and complained to the florist about them

delivering to the wrong house.

I also complained about no card coming with the flowers!

My wife said, “They might be from my boyfriend!”

The florist sent me a message to inform me that my

neighbor was working for the florist!

A couple days later, my grandson, age 5 at that time,

found the card deep inside the vase!

Well, RED is the color of the season!
