Patrick Robinson is the new executive director of
the Gentry Technical Facility in Alabama. This
center, an outreach program of the Alabama School
for the Deaf and Blind, helps deaf adults prepare
for life after graduation.
Moises Libot, a deaf Filipino activist, scolded
the Cebu Pacific Airlines for discriminating
against the deaf. His accusation made the news.
Greg Livadas, who has been distributing news about
NTID activities, has been transferred to another
position on the campus. He is being replaced by
Vienna Carvalho.
Haben Girma, a Berkeley, CA, deaf-blind attorney
became the first deaf-blind person to serve on
the board of trustees at the Helen Keller Services
for the Blind. A deaf-blind activist said this is
a big deal!
A deaf resident of Nevada has asked the Nevada
Department of Motor Vehicles to make its
driver handbook and written tests more deaf-friendly.

Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services is currently seeking
a motivated Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor RCD (Rehab Counselor
for the Deaf) to provide comprehensive vocational rehabilitation
services, which result in employment and enhanced independent living
for persons with disabilities. Core case management services include
guidance and counseling, training, physical/mental restoration, and
job placement services. Caseloads consist of individuals who are deaf
and hard of hearing and a general caseload of adults / students with
disabilities.
This position is located in Fishersville, Virginia, which is in the
Shenandoah Valley and is 15 minutes from the Virginia School for the

Job Requirements:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to communicate,
the challenges encountered by the students with hearing loss in a mainstream
setting.
2 Assess the instructional, organizational, and professional needs of client
schools
3. Facilitate parent involvement and support of family goals in the
education of their child.
4. Monitor the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems and other
assistive devices
5. Participate in IEP meetings and/or other meetings
6. Knowledge of teaching complex language structures and vocabulary development in
students with hearing loss.
Qualifications:
1. Master’s in education of the deaf with a focus on listening and spoken language.
2. Experience with and knowledge of mainstreaming students with hearing loss.
3. An understanding of best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment
for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
4. Knowledge of common modifications and accommodations for students with hearing
loss and the ability to articulate what they are and their benefit.
5. Able to communicate well with a diverse group of people, both hearing and those
with hearing loss with diplomacy.
6. Able to function effectively as a team member and work collaboratively with
others to share information and ideas.
7. Able to participate in IEP meetings, write goals and objectives and report on

Duties & Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, develops and maintains mutually beneficial
partnerships for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services with
agencies such as the Department of Education, the Department of
Technical and Adult Education, Developmental Disabilities, Mental
Health, the Social Security Administration, the Statewide Independent
Living Council (SILC), and other external resources/organizations
related to consumers who are deaf and hard of hearing. Statewide
travel is required.
· Supports the development and successful implementation of
initiatives as identified by the Strategic Agenda.
· Identifies potential new stakeholders, maintains established
relationships and collaborates with the deaf-blind, deaf and hard of
hearing communities to ensure provision of quality services to VR
customers.
· Monitors and reports on the use of stakeholder resources in the
deaf-blind, deaf and hard of hearing community.
· Responds to request for information about stakeholders in deaf and
hard of hearing communities.
· Researches grant and other funding opportunities. Submits proposals
to strengthen the work service delivery system.
· Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field
by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature by
attending related seminars and conferences. Applies pertinent new
knowledge to performance of other responsibilities and shares
information with VR Staff.
Minimum Training & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a related field
and two years of related experience Or Master’s degree in a related
field Or Five years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to meeting the minimum qualification, preference will be
given to applicants with the following qualifications.
· Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation, counseling,
psychology, education or a related field
· One year work experience in human service delivery capacity with
persons with sensory disabilities
· Current certification by the Commission on Counselor Certification
· Minimum of Intermediate Sign language skill level as measured by
the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLIPI).

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is looking for a full-time Staff
Interpreter to be housed in its headquarters office in Tallahassee,
Florida. The Staff Interpreter will work with the VR Deaf, Hard of
Hearing, and Deaf-Blind team, and is responsible for statewide
consultations to staff and the general public relating to interpreting
services and general communication methods for individuals who are deaf
and deaf-blind. The Staff Interpreter will also assist in potentially
developing/coordinating a statewide Support Services Provider (SSP)
project.
The applicant for this position shall have high quality interpreting
skills, knowledge of accommodations for individuals who are deaf-blind,
and a good understanding of the VR process. This position requires a
minimum of a high school diploma plus a credential in sign-language
interpreting (e.g., state, national) in good standing, and preference will
be given to those who have experience working with individuals who are
deaf-blind. Salary is negotiable based on experience; the minimum starting
salary is $30,718.69.

Position Summary:
The Department of Linguistics seeks applicants for an appointment as
Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program,
at the University of New Mexico (UNM).
This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The
position is contingent upon final budgetary approval. Appointment will
begin in August 2015. The Ph.D. must be in hand by start date.
Responsibilities include teaching and research in the areas of
specialization and service.

and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology.
The Signed Language Interpreting Program offers a B.S. Degree in Signed

thorough understanding of the practice and ethics of the interpreting
profession within a liberal arts environment. We emphasize cultural
