It was reported that the Seattle Public Schools
do not have someone responsible for overseeing
the needs of deaf students. Rather it has been
divided among teachers, already overloaded with
their own duties and responsibilities.
Deaf prisoners in Kentucky are nearing settlement
in their lawsuit against Department of Corrections
on providing interpreters for them.
A lawsuit has been filed in Baltimore over the
refusal of a moviehouse to provide captions.
The South Asia Centre for Disability (India) has
accused the government of not hiring more deaf
despite the law requiring them to hire a percentage.
AgBell has published a list of recommendations for
audiologists, CI people and hearing aid specialists
to follow.

RIT Sponsors Math Competition for Middle School Students
Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Rochester Institute of Technology’s Math Competition for Middle School
Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing welcomes 6th, 7th and 8th graders
to RIT in Rochester, New York, for a weekend of math competition and fun
April 10 – 12, 2015.
Now in its 8th year, this annual math competition for middle school
students makes math fun and engaging. Participants solve a variety of math
problems within designated time periods. Trophies and cash prizes go to
the winners in several categories. And there also is time to socialize and
make new friends. The first 25 schools that submit completed registration
forms and payment, or payment authorizations, will be accepted to
participate in the competition. Registration will be closed when the 25
school limit is reached. The final registration deadline is December 15,
2014.

AN EMBARRASSING SITUATION
A deaf business owner, with an interpreter,
attended a 3-day workshop.
Each night there was a party where business people
socialize with each other and make contacts.
The interpreter cannot catch everything 100 percent.
There was a woman at the party that was with one of
the hearing business owners. That woman was not the
man’s wife, and everyone knew it except for the
deaf person and the interpreter.
The next day, the deaf man told the business man
that the woman he was with was very nice. The
room got quiet and all eyes were on the deaf man.
That was when he realized he should have kept
his mouth shut!

YOU ARE DEAF AND ARE BREAKING THE LAW IF:
You are living in Brawley, CA and it snows. The town enacted a
resolution banning snow within the city limits. This law equally
applies to all residents, deaf and hearing. But the hearing
people have a head start on getting rid of the snow once they’re
made aware of this obscure law before the snow police makes their
rounds. The deaf person, on the other hand, is out of luck, and
is caught red-handed leaving snow on the home property!

Family and social gatherings
Every year there are special parties for families and friends.
We, who have Usher Syndrome, may become frustrated.
It is not the Deaf community’s fault; it is just that they are used to
seeing us as Deaf people!
We who have Usher Syndrome lose our vision continually, often with less and
less side vision.
Using a funnel from your kitchen, place it over your eye and scan the room.
Or, use the funnel and chat with your friends in sign language and see how
difficult this can be.
For me now, I require tactile communication, which people are often not
aware of.
Lots of education and awareness needs to be continued..

The University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics

Position Summary:
The Department of Linguistics seeks applicants for an appointment as
Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program,
at the University of New Mexico (UNM).
This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. The
position is contingent upon final budgetary approval. Appointment will
begin in August 2015. The Ph.D. must be in hand by start date.
Responsibilities include teaching and research in the areas of
specialization and service.
Competitive salary. The Department of Linguistics at UNM specializes in
cognitive-functional approaches to the study of language, including corpus
and empirically-based studies, cross-linguistic research, and typology.
The Signed Language Interpreting Program offers a B.S. Degree in Signed
Language Interpreting. The mission of the Signed Language Interpreting
Program is to prepare entry level interpreters and transliterators with a
thorough understanding of the practice and ethics of the interpreting
profession within a liberal arts environment. We emphasize cultural
awareness, foster intellectual growth, and encourage academic excellence.

Detailed Job Description
We are seeking an individual who will contribute has the ability and
interest in contributing to a community committed to student
centeredness; professional development and scholarship; integrity and

This faculty member will:
– Provide direct instruction in the first and second year machining
and computer numerical control courses in our Associate degree program
in Computer Integration Machining Technology.
– Provide tutoring support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
enrolled in the College of Applied and Science Technology.
– Develop curriculum for existing programs and/or potential new
programs.
– Promote partnerships with industry and other academic settings.
– Work with the NTID Center of Employment to assist students in
finding cooperative work experiences.
– Mentor and advise students.
– Fulfill other faculty expectations and departmental needs.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing

– Bachelors or higher degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
