Top stories about the deaf:

People at relay centers threatened with hearing losses?

Don’t know, but there was a report that noise-induced

hearing losses have become a problem at corporate call

centers. Not sure if relay call centers belong to

the same category as corporate call centers? This report

came from Japan.

The University of Maryland has asked the court to

strip down the charges in the sports captioning lawsuit

filed by two deaf individuals. A big issue in the

lawsuit is that one of the two individuals is not

a Maryland resident!

A group Penn State University researchers studied a

group of CI recipients, these young deaf children

being implanted nine years ago – to see if they

have improved with speech and socializing. They

are saying, yes, there is some improvement.

Is this study valid? You decide – because the study was based on a group of just 19

children – too small a group to establish valid conclusions!

Vera Baird, the police chief of Northumbria, in

Great Britain, has recorded a video – for the deaf

in British Sign Language – explaining her priorities -

putting victims first, dealing with anti-social behavior,

domestic abuse, reducing crime  and community confidence.

The Captioning Working Group, which works with several

national deaf and hard of hearing organizations in

New Zealand, has given awards to individuals and

corporations which have done so much to promote

captions.

DEAF IN ONE WORD OR DEAF IN MANY WORDS

Many of us describe our deafness in one word -

deaf.

There are many deaf people that refuse to use

one word. They describe themselves as:

hearing loss is profound in one ear and severe in

another ear; I wear binaural hearing aids. And I

do not use ASL

This is blah, blah, blah, blah. Just better to

use one word – deaf!

SAD DEAF-HEARING FAMILY REUNION

It is common but sad – that hearing and deaf members

of a family have a bad argument about 50 years ago

with insults and accusations, etc.

Deaf and hearing family members don’t see each other

for 50 years until they meet again in a family reunion.

What is sad? That many of them (deaf and hearing)

don’t remember what the argument was all about!

NOT QUALIFIED FOR A POSITION AS DRESSMAKER

A deaf woman applied for a job as a dressmaker. She was given

a dressmaking test, competing against several hearing applicants.

The deaf woman was ranked #1 among these job applicants.

Additionally she has a university degree in Fashion Design,

and has worked on a freelance basis as a seamstress for various

tailoring shops in the city.

She did not get the job. The employer told her she was not

qualified!

Is this happening in USA, where we have ADA laws? No, it was

in London!

Rene Pellerin’s corner:

Another DeafDigest reader offered a suggestion about

side shields on glasses.

Remember I told you about my new glasses that make me

look like a Ninja Turtle!

Below is Tom’  remedy:

Get wide strips of Velcro, preferably black.  Cut them so you

can use both types on the sidepieces.  This would work for

virtually any pair of glasses.  So the need for custom glasses

is not so pronounced.  You would have to custom cut them

yourself but a few minutes is all it takes and when you don’t

want the side blinders you can simply take them off.  Carry an

extra set in your backpack or whatever you carry with you.  Now

to find a place that sells wide Velcro . . .

Cheap fix too.  Spread the word in DeafDigest.

Great suggestion Tom, now seem like I could get a set of

blinders from  the horse or pony stall!

Just need an SSP to reign me in!

Thanks for writing, Tom.
