process of acquiring a cochlear implant. The book is a compilation of
stories of individuals with cochlear implants that cover the
struggles and challenges endured, as well as the delights and
disappointments after surgery.
Many of the contributors to the book note how their involvement in
the deaf community and Deaf culture influenced their perceptions of
cochlear implants.

Top stories about the deaf:
The deaf couple who was tagged as deaf and dumb
on their returned lost baggage by American
Airlines are not satisfied that the baggage
handler was sent off to sensitivity training
class. They want him disciplined even further!
the link below is an article in the Lincoln Journal Star.
The Nebraska Association of the Deaf has recognized
the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature (state only has one
legislative body, not like two in other states).
Reason is that the legislative body has had its
floor proceedings fully captioned. Said a deaf leader -
As you can see, NeAD continues to make itself known to our legislative leaders so that our needs can be
addressed. We hope that these efforts will benefit the deaf and hard of hearing children of the future.
The Peace Corps is recording the Kenyan Sign Language.
A big reason is that this sign language differs from
region to region and so – they want everything on tape.
The Lancashire County Council in Great Britain
dropped East Lancashire Deaf Society as the social
service provider for deaf in need of assistance.
That was last September. To date, there has been
no replacement agency – and deaf people are angry
about it.
People in Iowa were surprised by the job description
for the next superintendent of Iowa’s schools for the deaf and blind. It does not require experience
either with the deaf and/or the blind.

INTERPRETERS WITH DEAF PERSONS
Do deaf people like having interpreters with them
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Some deaf people love it. Some deaf people hate it
because of no privacy.
A deaf person, at work, demanded an interpreter all
the time – even when going to the rest room. That was
the reason why that deaf person was not popular with
other deaf employees at that work place.

PEOPLE ANGRY AT COCHLEAR
Many people hate Cochlear for one big reason. CI’s
are very expensive.
Computer chip prices go down. Laptop prices go
down. iPad prices go down; also prices of many other
electronic devices go down.
But CI, which is electronic, has become more and
more expensive each year, prices go up, up and up!
This is why people hate Cochlear.

Many deaf kids of hearing families feel isolated -

Rene Pellerin’s corner:
Empowerment
When I travel and Support Service Providers (SSPs) are arranged for
me; most of them are volunteers, students, and friends.
They may assist when I am arriving at an airport ticket desk, during
hotel registration and or with general communication.
My frustration is that often these SSPs’ do all the talking without
asking me.
They may answer questions from airport agents or hotel clerks,
without my knowledge.
Recently, I was getting papers from the side pocket of my luggage to
hand to the agent or clerk showing my reservation information.
It turned out the SSPs had provided all the verbal or written details
already.
It is very important when you volunteer or work as an SSP that you
let the consumer handle their own affairs.
You are there to provide support. You are there to empower DeafBlind
individuals.
Thank you.
Rene’s show business is now entering its 3rd year and it
focuses on the Deaf-Blind.
