The Forbes Magazine ran an article on devices

that have changed the world. Such devices

were a low cost hearing aid and sign langauge

software.

Lynn Boyer, superintendent of the West Virginia

Schools for the Deaf and the Blind has

announced her retirement, Most likely the alumni

will demand a deaf superintendent, a request

ignored by the state Department of Education.

Old buildings on the campus of the past

Clarke School for the Deaf being converted to

condominiums? That was the plan, but the developer

pulled the plug, citing cost overruns.

The blog by FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has pushed

for a more enhanced Direct Video Communications.

This is great news for the deaf. Just hope the

AN ANGRY RESTAURANT HOSTESS

For a few months, a deaf person went to his favorite

restaurant and would always point to the table he

preferred to sit.

The hostess, who was an immigrant, got angrier

and angrier. She thought the pointing was rude and

was mocking her English accent.

She did not realize until later that the person

was deaf and could not speak at all.

The funny thing was that the deaf person was always

using ASL with his company at the table, and the hostess

did not realize it was sign language!

When I need to attend a conference, training, meeting or

entertainment out of state, it seems impossible!

An example is from my experience last month attending

a week long training.

I spent weeks looking for ways to get the support I needed,

particularly SSP services.

I emailed several programs, agencies and interpreter training

programs to seek volunteers.

Not one of them replied to my email request!

Is there a stigma against DeafBlind consumers or services?

Are interpreting agencies and Interpreter Training Programs

geared up to support the DeafBlind community? Are volunteer

or internship opportunities working with the DeafBlind an

integral part of ITPs or agencies and organizations for/of

the Deaf?

Being DeafBlind is frustrating. Lack of services is hurtful.

Detailed Job Description

Please note-this is Temporary Position

Teach three or four courses per semester in the broad areas of
Deaf cultural studies, structure of American Sign Language and

social sciences.  Participate in Institute service as time

permits.

We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest

in contributing to a community committed to student

Required Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral or Masters degree in Deaf studies or relevant social

sciences discipline and successful teaching experience.  Must

enjoy working with undergraduates in a collaborative

environment.  Proficiency in American Sign Language and strong

knowledge of Deaf culture.

Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s

continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and

individual differences.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Teachers are a 187-day exempt position.

Responsibilities include appropriate academic work

to their students, use appropriate communication techniques

to assure clarity and accuracy of conveyed information, work

with their department Principal in guiding parents toward

identifying their child’s strengths and weaknesses and in

programming for them accordingly through the IEP process,

attend in-service meetings and departmental meetings to

participate in decision-making, to maintain current

knowledge in the field, and to gain understanding of new

techniques and methodologies in education, participate in

curriculum development and curriculum revision projects,

maintain records of grades, achievement, and discipline

according to the needs of each assigned students,

collaborates with other teachers to assure appropriate and

dynamic programming for all students, work on extracurricular

committees or projects and perform related work assignments

as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PA State Police Criminal Clearance,

PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Clearance, Act 82.

Valid PA Driver’s License required.

Teachers of the Deaf are preferred to enter a master’s level with

some experience.  The minimum requirement for this position is a

Bachelor’s level degree with certification in Deaf Education.  PA

Instructional I or II certification in Deaf Education required.

The Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) for this position

is “Advanced”.  The minimum level accepted at hire is “Intermediate”.

Description:                   The Assistant Vice President provides
