What is Trauma?

An informational video.  See the attached  vlog in ASL.

Trauma is defined as any situation that shatters your sense

of security or makes you feel unsafe or vulnerable.

A person is most likely to have emotional suffering from the

event if it was not expected or the person felt unprepared or

powerless.  Learn more about how trauma can affect a person

and where you can find treatment in the video below.

Top stories about the deaf:

A $39,000 settlement was reached in a federal civil trial in which two Michigan police officers were found guilty of excessive force with a hearing man who was defending

a deaf cousin.

Alaska has problems with the state budget. If there is

a government shutdown, then the Alaska School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing only has enough money for just

three months.

DEAF ONE-THIRD, ONE-THIRD, ONE-THIRD GROUPS

One-third, one-third and one-third groups?

What is it?

Of deaf people that graduate from Gallaudet and

from NTID, then it is one-third, one-third and

one-third!

One third of these people you will see often

at deaf clubs or at deaf bowling leagues or

at deaf picnics or at deaf churches, etc.

One third of these people you see once every

five or ten years. They rarely go out and mingle

with the deaf.

One third of these people just disappear. We

don’t know if they are still alive or have died!

You are stopped by the police on some driving infraction.

You sit in your car – the police officer does not come near you – but shouts at you from behind for you to step out of the car. Because you are deaf and because the police officer never approached you face to face, you are arrested for insubordination!
