DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Joy Max Floyd Sr

who departed us. After graduating from Texas School for

the Deaf, he worked as an automobile mechanic – for an car dealership and then for another company and then with the Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf. A friend described him as:

“the best and most honest mechanic on earth” by those who knew him.

He also was heavily involved in a range of local and state

organizations for the deaf.

in Nashville, TN on September 21st will be getting a free

NOAA Weather Radio device.

Both Gallaudet University and the Northern Essex Community College

(Massachusetts) have jointly celebrated its 32-year working

relationship in a ceremony last week.

As in the past, there is another push to have sign language

recognized as South Africa’s 12th official languages. All

previous efforts have failed.

India’s National Association of the Deaf needed funds for

furniture, computer, printers and projectors. Coming to

the rescue was a donation from the State Bank of India in

Chandigarh.

A croaking frog helping improve the hearing aid? Well, a team of researchers from University of Minnesota have

been looking at the frogs to see how communications between

them would help hearing aids pick up receptions – ie across

a noisy party room.

MENU CHOICES IN RESTAURANTS

A deaf person goes to a restaurant and points out

his menu choices to come with a meal – white rice or

brown rice, French Fries or Baked Potatoes, French

Dressing or Ranch Dressing, etc.

A hearing person will speak out his choices,

making it easy for the waiter to follow.

A deaf person would point with his finger, and

sometimes the waiter gets confused and gives the

deaf person the wrong choice!

Deaf people must be very careful with choices

in all restaurants.

A SMALL TOWN HAIRSTYLIST

Many small towns are lacking in business services to the deaf

(stores, shops, etc).

Deaf people living in Cumming, GA may be lucky. Susan Perdue,

a deaf hairstylist, has moved to a salon in the town, from another

salon elsewhere.

She works at Hair Town six days a week.

A NEW DEAF CHARTER SCHOOL IN MAINE?

Will there be a new deaf charter school in Maine? This deaf group

is among several other hearing groups competing with each other

for funding to establish a new charter school. There is only one

winner.

The Birches Montessori School, in central Maine is hoping to

establish a K-6 program for the deaf and the hard of hearing.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Some people may have been hesitant to request Communication Access

Realtime Translation (CART) services in an educational setting

because they thought they had to hire and pay for the services

themselves.  However, according to the Americans with Disabilities

Act (ADA), CART is a legitimate auxiliary aid for people who are deaf

or hard-of-hearing.  It has also been confirmed in the courts that it

is a reasonable accommodation for those people.

Some CART providers may be employees of the university or school

system, while others are independent contractors hired to cover

specific courses for specific students.  Many times the university

contracts with a CART/captioning agency to provide CART services for

whatever classes may need to be covered, and that agency will then

use their employees or independent contractors to cover the classes.

In Maryland the law requires all attorneys to file an annual

Pro Bono Service Report with the state. Maryland has a number

of deaf attorneys. Would they all do serve to the deaf as part of

doing their Pro Bono duty? Said a deaf attorney – there are

three options

1. to serve the poor, regardless of hearing or deaf

2. to serve a non profit agency, regardless of hearing or deaf

3. to enhance the serving of law as a public service

So, this service report is not always great news to the deaf!

Did you know that -

Henry Whitney, who was deaf, was the postmaster of the Hawaiian Kingdom

(years before Hawaii became a new state of the USA). This Kingdom issued

its own postal stamps, and Whitney served as the postmaster twice in

the years to come, first in 1850 and then second, 27 years later. As the postmaster he helped design one of the most expensive postage stamps ever. His boss was the Minister of Interior.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Katura Martin, who is deaf, was recently crowned as the

Rodeo Queen in Sandoaval County in New Mexico. It is said that

she is the first deaf participant to win such a huge honor.

She’s hardly a newcomer to the rodeo world, having grew up

and worked with farm and cattle animals all her life.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Many people, both hearing and deaf, do not

know how to vote. There are many “voting education”

programs for the hearing.

What about the deaf? There is one going on in

Georgia, called “Georgia Deaf Vote.”

This is great, and we hope that more other

Deaf Communities will pick it up.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

For many hearing employers, the biggest fear is insurance.

High insurance premiums, or being denied insurance, may be

the reason why deaf people are not hired for these “high risk” jobs.

An example would be a deaf person working as a forklift operator

for over 20 years. This company burned down in a bad fire and

went out of business. This deaf employee has not been able to

find another forklift driving job elsewhere in the area.

High risk jobs for the deaf? Not really because it is the same as

high risk jobs for the hearing!

A person, wanting to make new friends, introduced himself.

The deaf person thought he said:

my name is Arthur Plend

for months, the deaf person actually thought Plend was his

last name.

He later learned the last name was Blend!

Community Rehabilitation Services

Maine Center on Deafness is on the fast track, seeking applications for the position of Program Manager for a newly developed, grant-funded position to provide Community Rehabilitation Services to Deaf individuals and people with hearing loss in the Greater Portland area.  This is a position for a highly motivated self-starter with management skills and experience who can comply with new requirements and expectations for job development and job coaching.   The Program Manager will follow enhanced standards for serving nontraditional job seekers who are Deaf or have hearing loss. This is a benefits-eligible position with the flexibility to be part or full time depending on the skill set the candidate brings to the job.

Position Overview: The Program Manager will be responsible for the following duties and expectations:

.    Work with the State of Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Services to learn the newly-developed structure of Community Rehabilitation Providers (CRP) in Maine

.    Develop relationships with employers to .sell. them on the idea of hiring these job seekers

.    Develop and direct an Advisory Council of invested partners to meet on a quarterly basis to ensure program quality and service provision

.    Recruit, manage, and supervise three CRP.s (job coaches) in their work directly with job seekers and employers, and the completion of required paperwork

.    Prepare and report to Director of Financial Operations qualitative and quantitative program data to satisfy City of Portland HUD grant funding requirements

.    Provide some direct CRP service to job seekers.

Position Requirements: The Program Manager must meet the following requirements:

.    Fluency in American Sign Language along with strong written English and face-to-face communication skills

.    Comfort and ability to communicate via live video technology and other adaptive equipment

.    Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint computer systems, including documentation in a standardized database

.    Commitment to successfully complete the ACRE (Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators) certification course by January 1, 2014

.    Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with clients of varying communication methods who may have multiple disabilities .    The chosen candidate will be required to submit to a criminal background and a motor vehicle record check that meets company standards.

Additional Requirements:  Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal, communication and writing, time management and follow-through skills. Any applicant must be a self-starter able to manage multiple assignments with minimal oversight, must be able to work effectively as a member of a small team and in collaboration with the community, and be fluent in American Sign Language.  Interviews will contain components in both English (may be written) and ASL.  Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and use of a reliable, insured vehicle.  Extensive travel expected and some periodic overnight travel may be required.  Experience in office management, Microsoft Office and Access, and front-line service delivery is a must.  Strong customer relations and/or sales background and previous experience working with D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened and Deaf-Blind populations is greatly desired.

of American Sign Language.  Responsibilities will include teaching

American Sign Language (ASL 1701, 1702, 3703, and 3704) at the

undergraduate level as scheduled for Fall and/or Spring Semesters.

Individual(s) appointed will be expected to prepare content, evaluate

student performance, and to meet with individual students as needed.

Minimum qualifications for Assistant Ed Specialist Position:

·      BA/BS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or

related fields (candidates with BA/BS in other fields will be

considered only if that individual can provide evidence of three

years full-time teaching ASL using the Signing Naturally Curriculum)

Primary function:

Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals.  Develops employment options and coordinates job placement efforts by improving the employment outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons and persons with disabilities.  Coordinates with employers, Vocational Rehabilitation, Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and training delivery systems.  Maintains contractual relationship with funding source, maintains unit records of consumer contacts to include unit counts, attendance sheets, SOAP notes and daily checklists while ensuring that all contractual documentation in client files is complete. Essential functions:

.    Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals

.    Works with team of COPD-NM staff to review intake information and to coordinate services

.    Develops consumer plans and coordinates consumer activities through the Agency system

.    Reviews referrals and provides intake and initial assessment for program eligibility; completes all required program paper work

.    Develops relationships with community employers to provide a network of training and job placement opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and persons with disabilities

.    Performs vocational counseling, job development, and job coaching .    Collaborates and coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Welfare to Work, youth opportunity programs, dislocated worker programs, school systems, employers, consumer based organizations, training delivery systems and community vocational rehabilitation programs to increase access to training and job opportunities

.    Assures that staff are aware, trained and knowledgeable of CCS and SCS policies

.    Management and oversight of contracts and grants related to Vocational Rehabilitation, private foundations and other governmental entities

.    Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all agency programs .    Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

.    Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS Personnel Policies and Procedures

.    Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options and NISH contracts

.    Supports the Agency’s use of best practices

.    Consults with staff supervisor, as needed, to assure the competencies of the strategies with staff and the use and integration of techniques with consumers in the program

Description:

Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Instruction

oversees and supervises the Curriculum Supervisor, Technology and Training

Services Supervisor, Special Instructional Projects Supervisor and all

Instructional Principals.

Responsibilities:

Provide daily leadership, guidance, supervision and direction to nine

program supervisors

Provide training, support, and visionary leadership in the areas of

curriculum implementation, dual language philosophy, positive behavior

intervention, professional learning communities, standards- based

education and classroom observations

Conduct Instructional Management Team meetings as well as some general

Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet team with the other

school and state policies, state education code, and federal legislation.

Required Qualifications:

Five years experience as a classroom teacher in a program for the Deaf

Three years experience as a Supervisor or Principal of teachers

Fluency in ASL and standard written English

Master’s degree and possession of or eligibility for California

credentials authorizing teaching and administrative services

Knowledge of state and federal laws related to education

- Ability to use technology effectively

Looking for a part time employee who signs . Austin

I work for the Mary Lee Foundation, which is a non-profit in South Austin that provides services for people with disabilities.  One of the people we provide for is deaf so I am looking for a female employee to work part time who signs to work with this 19 year old young lady.  The hours would be 1 week day after school (around 5p-7p) and 5-6 hours on a Saturday or Sunday.  They would be taking her on activities and teaching her good social and community skills.

The job requirements are being at least 21 years old, valid Texas drivers license and vehicle  insurance, good driving record, good criminal history, non-smoker, ability to lift without restriction, good writing skills.

The pay is $9 per hour plus mileage for driving the person on outings.

She lives in north Austin (almost in Pflugerville) so ideally, this person lives north so they do not have to drive very far to pick her up.

Parent Guide and Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Guide openings

The Texas Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side (GBYS) program has part time position openings for the following: one (1) D/HH Guide in the Houston metro area, one (1) Parent Guide in the South Houston area and one (1) Parent Guide in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area.

A Parent Guide must be a parent/guardian of a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. A D/HH Guide must be an adult who is d/Deaf or hard of hearing. The Guides will undergo specialized ongoing training in order to provide support to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing including a mandatory 2 day training held in Austin in November 2013.

Guide By Your Side (GBYS) is a program of Texas Hands & Voices that provides support for parents of children who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, or deaf with additional disabilities. The goal of the program is to provide parents . with d/hh children ages birth to twenty-one . the opportunity to establish a supportive relationship with a trained and experienced fellow parent and/or a d/Deaf or hard of hearing adult.
