Top stories about the deaf:

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and the Department of Arts and Culture have hosted a performing arts competition for deaf participants from Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe

and the host South Africa. The winner of this event

will be showcased at a bigger gala event next

month.

The Sandals Negril restaurant in Jamaica has been

praised for hiring five deaf employees to work

in the kitchen. One of them just won the Employee

of the Month award.

All colleges have souvenirs for sale – caps, sweaters,

pennants, blankets, etc. Iowa State University (ISU) is one of these many colleges that sell souvenirs. One of the ISU souvenir merchants is Joshua Kagavi. He is deaf.

Will West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, at

Romney, move? There is much talk about it among the

state people. The final decision will be made at the

January 2014 meeting with the West Virginia Board of Education. Yes, people living in Romney are very

angry about it. The school is the biggest employer

in this small town.

Pressure is being applied by the deaf community to have

the Welsh parliamentarians caption their proceedings

on TV. There has been resistance in the past.

HATING IT WHEN HEARING CLERKS ARE REASSIGNED

You go to the same place everyday – such as your bank, or your

donut place, coffee cafe, grocery store, etc – and you see same

old friendly hearing clerks. They know you are deaf and you have

no problems with them.

Suddenly you see new faces. You don’t know them. They don’t know

you and also they do not realize you are deaf and may not know how

to deal with you.

Many chain stores reassign their clerks to different stores. We

all hate this rotation of clerks. It starts everything all over again!

IT HELPS TO MAKE A THREAT

In the case of Ken Lynch, who is hard of hearing, it

has helped to make a threat.

He was elected as a councilman in the local Sandy Town

government in Great Britain.

The council refused to install loop system to allow his

hearing aid to pick up the discussions.

He threatened to quit. The council relented and installed

this system!

A DEAF BAND IN ASIA

There is a deaf band in Asia. It is the ExtraOrdinary Horizons

which performs at clubs in Singapore.

It is being led by Lily Goh, an ambitious deaf woman, who wants

to achieve more things in life than just performing in music only.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

In 1982, the first realtime closed captioning of a television program

was done by the National Captioning Institute.  Before that, all

closed captioning had been done using a preprogrammed or prescripted

method.  There had always been a delay in order to allow time for the

captions to be prepared.

With the first realtime captioning, it meant that the captioning

could be done live as the event was occurring.  The first realtime

captions were part of an Academy Awards presentation that had been

kept secret so no captions could be prepared ahead of time.

Later that same year, on October 11, 1982, probably the most

important event in television closed captioning took place when ABC’s

nationally televised “World News Tonight” was captioned as it was

being broadcast live.  This was the first national news show that was

captioned live as it was taking place.

A bill has been filed in the Philippines legislative

body to require captions on TV during emergency situations.

Did you know that -

Ruby Rader, a deaf woman, raised hogs on a ranch

in Trenton, Tennessee, a town of 4,000 people during

the seventies and eighties. Her dream was made possible

by a sizable loan from the Farmers Home Administration.

This agency originally turned her down, thinking a

deaf woman could not do the job. Ruby would not give

up and was able to get the loan. Growing up she

attended Tennessee School for the Deaf and then

“won” the Miss Trenton Pageant, only to “lose” it

when the town officials felt a deaf woman should not

compete in such pageants! She was praised by her

peers as one of the best hog farmers around, always

thinking of ways to breed the best hogs around.

Supervise and independently evaluate employees. May perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

.    Oversees consumers into the main COPD-NM service program performing intakes and triaging person to appropriate individuals

.    Works with team of COPD-NM staff to review intake information and to coordinate services

.    Develops consumer plans and coordinates consumer activities through the Agency system

.    Reviews referrals and provides intake and initial assessment for program eligibility; completes all required program paper work

.    Provides assessments addressing training needs, support needs and environmental adaptation needs of the work site

.    Develops relationships with community employers to provide a network of training and job placement opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and persons with disabilities

.    Performs vocational counseling, job development, and job coaching .    Collaborates and coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Welfare to Work, youth opportunity programs, dislocated worker programs, school systems, employers, consumer based organizations, training delivery systems and community vocational rehabilitation programs to increase access to training and job opportunities

.    Assures that staff are aware, trained and knowledgeable of CCS and SCS policies

.    Management and oversight of contracts and grants related to Vocational Rehabilitation, private foundations and other governmental entities

.    Develops and prepares required contract monitoring reports for all agency programs .    Acts as a liaison to other community agencies

.    Ensures that all programs, services and staff actions adhere to contract requirements, licensing and accreditation standards, and CCS Personnel Policies and Procedures

.    Supports Agency growth through the development of enclave options and NISH contracts

.    Supports the Agency’s use of best practices

.    Consults with staff supervisor, as needed, to assure the competencies of the strategies with staff and the use and integration of techniques with consumers in the program

.    Meets with employers and supports the development of training and employment options for consumers

.    Works with schools and the County to set up classes for Deaf youth and adults in the areas of cognitive therapy and employment retention skills

Position Purpose: Supervises and directs Client through COPD in the areas of counseling, advocacy, case management, client intake, assessment, supported employment and day treatment programs for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind individuals and provides therapeutic counseling. .    Develop, oversee and monitor training programs for interns, Service Support Providers and other project staff

.    Assist with project development to foster enhancement and growth within the program

.    Report caseload size, consumer needs and staffing patterns to supervisor for review of         productivity

.    Develop community partnerships, and oversee staff training, and presentation sin the community

.    Oversee referrals, intakes and screens clients into the programs, coordinates client services throughout the system; determine staffing pattern response in relationship to consumer needs

.    Aids in the development of contracts specific to Client Services.

.    Develops and implements FCC program.

.    Works with staff to support the development of a state-wide SSP Curriculum

.    Works with the Courts and outside partners in the development of a victim domestic violence program.

.    Assure all staff are knowledgeable of best practices to persons with a hearing loss and represent SCS in services to persons with a hearing loss

.    Assure all programs meet contract standards including DOL and CARF

.    Conduct site visits and perform qualify and safety reviews for accreditation compliance

.    May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

.    Master’s in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Rehabilitation or related field

.    LPC, LISW, LAC .    American Sign Language skills

.    5 years of supervisory experience in program management

.    5 years of experience working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing persons in a counseling and professional capacity

Community Rehabilitation Services Portland, Maine

Maine Center on Deafness is on the fast track, seeking applications for the position of Program Manager for a newly developed, grant-funded position to provide Community Rehabilitation Services to Deaf individuals and people with hearing loss in the Greater Portland area.  This is a position for a highly motivated self-starter with management skills and experience who can comply with new requirements and expectations for job development and job coaching.   The Program Manager will follow enhanced standards for serving nontraditional job seekers who are Deaf or have hearing loss. This is a benefits-eligible position with the flexibility to be part or full time depending on the skill set the candidate brings to the job.

Position Overview: The Program Manager will be responsible for the following duties and expectations:

.    Work with the State of Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Services to learn the newly-developed structure of Community Rehabilitation Providers (CRP) in Maine

.    Develop relationships with employers to .sell. them on the idea of hiring these job seekers

.    Develop and direct an Advisory Council of invested partners to meet on a quarterly basis to ensure program quality and service provision

.    Recruit, manage, and supervise three CRP.s (job coaches) in their work directly with job seekers and employers, and the completion of required paperwork

Additional Requirements:  Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal, communication and writing, time management and follow-through skills. Any applicant must be a self-starter able to manage multiple assignments with minimal oversight, must be able to work effectively as a member of a small team and in collaboration with the community, and be fluent in American Sign Language.  Interviews will contain components in both English (may be written) and ASL.  Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and use of a reliable, insured vehicle.  Extensive travel expected and some periodic overnight travel may be required.  Experience in office management, Microsoft Office and Access, and front-line service delivery is a must.  Strong customer relations and/or sales background and previous experience working with D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened and Deaf-Blind populations is greatly desired.

Description:

Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Instruction

oversees and supervises the Curriculum Supervisor, Technology and Training

Services Supervisor, Special Instructional Projects Supervisor and all

Instructional Principals.
